Hello fellow Xanadunians! By now, I'm sure you've all heard about Operation: Flatten Xanadu, and have questions about what it entails and how it will affect your gameplay, so I started this thread to provide some explanations in one place. You may have already noticed our team members in your local chat recently. Perhaps you've seen some server chat as we coordinate our efforts to flatten the server in the most efficient manner possible. Fear not. At the current state of the project, all we are doing is digging up all the dirt in your area and possibly -- depending on your elevation -- surface-mining the underlying rock and discarding the shards. In summary, and as the name implies, the goal of Operation: Flatten Xanadu is to reduce the entire Xanadu server to a single uniform layer exactly one dirt above sea level. We're going to destroy all the mountains, fill in all the lakes, discard all the rocks and most of the dirt, and be left with a perfectly flat, uniform landmass. Operation: Flatten Xanadu -- FAQ Q -- Why are you doing this? A -- We, the members of this project, feel quite strongly that Xanadu should be flat. Q -- What are the phases of this project? A -- Phase One is woodcutting. We will remove every single tree, bush and hedge from the server, in preparation for future phases. If we do it fast enough -- within about 36 hours -- we can prevent Xan's flora from respawning, very easily. Phase Two entails digging up every single unit of dirt on the server and immediately discarding it, leaving only exposed rock across the whole of Xanadu. In Phase Two/Three we begin to surface-mine every rock tile down until the landmass of Xan is all rock, one dirt below sea level. In Phase Three, we begin to import dirt from other servers in order to fill in Xan's lakes and cover the flat rock, bringing all tiles up to sea level. We estimate this will cost approximately 2,931,248 silver, which we will fund by selling shallow-water fish to players from other servers. Q -- How long do you think this will take? Based on initial estimates, we believe we can have Xanadu fully leveled to our specifications by early December 2020, assuming enough players get on board and commit the hours. Q -- How many players are currently involved? A -- Four. Q -- I own a deed on Xan, how will this affect me? A -- If you've always wanted to live on an island, or if you're a rice farmer, this is awesome news! If you're not, it's probably not going to end well for you.. Q -- Why are you doing this again? We, the members of this project, feel quite strongly that Xanadu should be flat.

Siathes had skillfully spotted the otherwise great-in-the-hiding-game-by-nature kyklops of Release which has been lured with foul smelling candies into a mine. A staring eyes contest will be held on next Saturday, the 25th July at 5PM GMT. I hope the timer is correct, I'm lame at it. If a tome drops, it will not be rolled in public, rare bone and other loot will be rolled out between the players (exluding alts) who are on the Niarja kill list. In case of no tome, finder will get rare bone (or an item of his choice) from the loot the rest is going to be rolled. See you there for a little fun and a leatherworking blood! Location: P13 on the ingame map.

with the new server coming out and the steam release the area around the starter deed is going to be a favela of 1x1 shacks, and not everyone is going to like being so close to everyone, random spawn option would help spread people out a bit and enable a more hardcore start option. could even just use the rift spawning algorithm where they cant spawn x tiles from deeds water sides of mountains etc

What i wrote there i think is what people often forget about we the players and new players quite often overlook it as they are used to that being the case but wurm really is about providing you the tools to create a place you can call yours or "ours" if with friends to carve out something out of nothing and be proud of it with no real end goal in mind something a lot of games dont have as most games now days all have an end a clear defined end Space engineers for example on the surface its a game that has endless possibilities but it still has a end your stations can only become that big your ships that large your automation network that wide(mods) before the engine gives out the content is there but beyond the first dive into it there is no 2nd dive no 3rd no nothing afterwards Wurm offers that afterwards and people are not used to that they are not used to games that give a continued experience to keep going even after the apparent end without redoing stuff(new game++ games or mmorpg's in general) Something that really is missing from anywhere in any kind of info about the game is that the game isnt about completing skills to max or making the most optimal place to grind sure you can do that but the game really is about providing a place where you the player can do what you want be it being a hermit playing a few hours a day making a small place in a forest in the middle of no where, or a person living underground with no trace on the surface but a token(underground tokens please) or a giant castle or a mountain range spanning wonder, Quite often i see new players asking "so what do i need to kill to get loot"(Not as much recently) or "So what is the end goal for this game" and when told there is none they go away or loose interest as they are just not used to creating their own end goals And honestly that is what wurm should focus on a bit more in showing that you are in charge of your goals in this game that you decide what you want to do from a humble farmer to a king of a kingdom to miner making a giant maze in search of gold the game gives you the tools but the play style is up to you to make the most out of it based on your personality and habits

Distinguished Wurmians! Today we are thrilled to announce the launch time of the Northern Freedom Cluster and Wurm Online on Steam! Wurm Online will become available to play on Steam on the 24th of July, at 19:00 CET. That's not all! In anticipation of the launch of Wurm Online on Steam, we present the brand new trailer! When I viewed this, I was astounded at just how magical the world of Wurm truly is. The possibilities and inspiration have me excited to play on the new Northern Freedom Isles too, is anyone looking for a villager? This trailer was a long project and included many revisions. The brains behind it as always was Malena, who had this to say about it: There's more news to come soon with the revised names for the Northern Freedom Isles too, so stay tuned for that! From us all at the Wurm team, we hope you enjoy it as much as we do, and look forward to seeing you on Steam. Retrograde & the Wurm team

The Impalong is great! Really enjoyed myself. Got some stuff improved and even had some spells cast on my items which is fab! Took these pics of the Impalong so far. Is in thumbnail view below.

Zexos I fully understand where your heart is at with your feedback. I appreciate your best intentions for the game and also think the way you explained your feedback was very clear and considerate. I completely understand the point you're trying to make, but there are a couple of points to consider from the other side: 1) Promotional material for games is always showing the game at it's "best potential" and I think most gamers understand this. 2) Let's stop to consider what this trailer would have been like, without the little extras. If we use the cooking scene as an example: At the end of the day, cooking in Wurm is a character standing in one place in front of an oven, making no sounds, making no animations and with all the items in inventory. All veggies and other food items hidden away in a food bsb versus placed on a table. How could we have communicated and conveyed the theme of "cooking" in a clip like that? Let's say you were directing the trailer: What's your vision on how that should have been implemented visually?

It's not quite as grand as building the biggest market, or slaying the first dragon, or first to 100. I want to create a place where people log in, play together, teach newbies the ropes, and tell stories about that time an anaconda destroyed our entire party. For too many, this game is about walling yourself off and grinding in isolation. Guess I'm just happy as long as I make some new friends and create exciting stories about ridiculous events

Maybe I'm wrong. Starting off with 1 in all skills, with a crappy hatchet, saw, shovel and pick. No forge, no mines, no fight skill, so even pheasants will kill you. Can't ride a horse. What if there's no clay near spawn, or rats/wild cats? If you want to dig and drop dirt for an hour, sure, maybe you can hit digging 20... what else can you hit 20 at in an hour? Carpentry? Wood cutting? I'm not convinced, but I'll wait and see. I've been playing the game for about 10 years now. Call me a casual if you want, but I work 40 hours a week and I play games other than Wurm. /shrug

Hey there Zexos! You hit the nail on the head as far as my wanting to show the full potential of Wurm. Sure, there are a couple of little things that are enhanced to be cooler than they are, however I am quite confident in saying that most of what you see in the trailer can or could be done! This includes all of the buildings you see. If you meant an example such as chopping a carrot against a table or grinding nutmeg with the mortar and pestle sitting on the table, no - I believe those types of actions would require you to have those items in your inventory. However since food preparation can often be a very complex process, I don't see why you couldn't at least organize all the ingredients and tools that you will need and lay them out on the table as you make the food step by step. In the video, she's not actually interacting with any of the items on the table, she' merely doing a random crafting animation. So in that sense, the scene could easily depict what I just described. What other spots left you wondering?

Every damn time I open anything, it's a mess! Don't say "just one click to sort it yourself". Do not say that. I have wasted too many clicks already. And while you're at it, do the same for inventory when first logging in. 😫

I think we all should take a moment and make sure we are not shooting WURM in the foot by being Greedy, could we be setting up two huge mistakes in our Veterans rush and land grab? Could the Portal only link to the new Wild server be a doom to new players who decide they do not like or were not cut out for the PVP, forcing them to leave all they built there on Wild? I have to wonder about this as the Steam Server Launch is about attracting New Players and growing WURMs overall population. Many of us Veterans are planning to go to the new Steam PVE server and start new deeds, markets, etc. But also could we be killing WURM by being so focused on our fascinations with Markets and Driving a new server economy? What if we by doing this end up driving away many New players as we have already learned from mistakes and know how and what to do, like don't poke Trolls with sticks and that it will take 5 of us to kill a rat, not likely but hey. I think everyone of us needs to take a step back and realize, COULD we be shooting ourselves in the foot? Also there is no RMT any more and silvers are only worth that, Deed upkeep and play time. Also, and i shall start a separate thread for this, but having the PVP server Portal access only is a bad idea. What about new players that get established over there, build a ship, wagon, collect some nice stuff decide PVP isn't for them. Are we expecting them to carry what they can on their backs and start over on the Freedom Server? I think that needs some serious re-thinking. This whole Steam thing is about NEW PLAYERS and retaining them.

You were met with genuine arguments and rather than continue discussing you just rage some bs and throw in the towel. Bravo What's pointless is completely leaving new players to their own devices by not at least giving the option of purchasing tools, gear, etc. from vets.

Many years ago, I saw an advert in a computer magazine about a game called Wurm Online. I also viewed a stutteringly blurred video of what could be done in the game by characters that looked oh so similar. I took the plunge almost 9 years to the day ago and have played almost every day since I have just looked at the incredible video (well done Malena) and feel so proud that I am part of a community that chooses to play Wurm. I would be amazed and somewhat saddened if people were not encouraged to give Wurm a go. Once they start playing, our incredible community will surely ensure that many of these new players stay within the game and carve out their own career in Wurm Well done to all our development team past and present and I wish you all a great launch next week- I hope we can make Rolf and Notch proud of just how far their dream has travelled.

Because using the special camera tools, the level of detail versions of the more detailed armor like chain would have loaded the low quality versions which would have looked bad. Plate seemed to look ok regardless of whether it was the high res "close" version, or the far "LOD" version. Edit: To clarify a bit. When filming, a special camera tool was used that went far away from my character. The farther away the camera was from my character, the lower level details of the scenery, armor, characters etc. But it had to be done this way to get the nice camera shots.

Very epic video, awesome work! I love the atmosphere! I agree that the PvP part was very small, but PvP probably does have enough unique content to be worth an independent trailer

Some of you may know me as Yekrut. Others may call me Turkey. And others may remember me as Shut up, kid! Whether you do or don't know me, I have a history in Wurm Online spanning several years and I have a plan for the new Steam PVE server. I've been planning this for any new server. I just didn't know it would take place on a new set of servers, but hey, I'm only human. I'm looking to put together a large market--THE largest market on the new Steam PVE server. I've already started planning. I want to get everything as organized as possible before the server opens and I'm looking for experienced players to join up. What I want is for players who plan to play on the new server to sign up and take on a specific role. When it comes to authority, you will have the responsibility of managing that aspect of the settlement, with input from myself and the other managers. We will have regular small meetings to review and plan future changes to the settlement. You and I will discuss how you should use your role for the betterment of the market and I'll make sure the whole thing comes together in an interesting and organized way. We will find a project for you to work on, and you spend as much time on it as you can. For example, if you agree to be our Master Dye Maker, you will need to level that skill up as quickly as possible because the market will be counting on you. If you're the Main Animal Breeder, your fellow market developers will be counting on you to donate and sell whatever animals you can. Not a lot of sales will be happening at the start of the server because skill levels will be low and no pro items will be in the game yet. Working together and helping each other will set our market apart from other markets. Working together will also help you to acquire better tools and resources before other settlements in the game. We'll design the market to be enormous, colorful, and aesthetically pleasing. I also plan to have a limited amount of lighting to ensure that players have as little lag as possible while in the market. We want to be very, very organized so the market will look amazing. For that to happen, each person's personal preferences will be somewhat limited. What does that mean? It means that the Main Building Designer will have most control over how the residential area looks. It'll be his job to plan structures and see that they are built in an organized way (placement, material type, size). The Main Outdoor Decorator will be in charge of decorating the outside shrubs and landscapes, etc. This is a normal limitation while being part of a larger settlement. But it's good because having one person choose these things for everyone will make an overall better visual effect. Also note that you may have to work with another manager to accomplish some aspects of your role. For example, if you're the ship builder, you may not be able to make your own high level ropes, so you would need to collaborate with other villagers to get rope. Most likely you could trade for some ropes or give up your products for free starting out and someone is likely to give you what you need when they get it. Helping someone else first can go a long way in villager relationships. It's a big undertaking. What do you have to gain from helping out with this project? Let me list a few things that will put you ahead of everyone else when it comes to the new server: -You'll get a larger, more desirable house in the market area. -You'll have a preferred space for a merchant when the market is ready to open.(still true) -You'll have access to a large community that shares their tools and resources with you, which will put us ahead of other settlements.(still true) -You will be conveniently located next to the largest market in the server.(still true) -It will be easier to raise your skills being in a large settlement with a common mine, forge, etc. (still true) -We will be a large settlement at first, while we raise our skills and develop the market. Then we'll open the market as it's ready and the server matures.(still true) -You'll be able to make some silver a little later, when the market opens to traffic from the entire server. (still true) -You will have access to our wagoner, which makes bulk shipping much more convenient than delivering it yourself by cart or ship.(still true) -You'll be part of a settlement that won't play for a few days and then quit. It's common among new players. We will keep growing this community until we're all highly skilled and rich. You will also have the benefit of being part of a large-scale project, which will be much bigger than most, if not all, other settlements early in the game.(still true) What do you have to lose? What do we need from you? You'll need a few things to be able to sign up to take on a role: -Premium. You'll need high skills eventually to continue to improve the market's appearance and amenities, which will require premium on at least one of your accounts. -This isn't like a real job, so you create your own hours. However, in order to fulfill your role as a manager, you'll need to put in an honest effort. If it becomes clear that you aren't fulfilling your duties or trying to steal/scam other members of the group, we'll replace you with someone who fills the role more adequately. -Donations. While you're raising your skills you can create storage bins, forges, carts, etc. to level up your character to be able to perform more difficult tasks. Collect your shards, ores, wood, etc. and throw them in a bin so that other people may use them for raising their skills. This type of network can be beneficial for everyone who joins in on this market. If it's not useful to you at the moment, it may be useful for someone else, so don't throw it away. Give it away if you can. Phase 1 - Set up stations for grinding up skills, a small house for each player on the table above, and a small building for each main development focus, such as smithing, leatherworking, etc. At the moment this stage is expected to last for around 1 month. It really depends on how fast we can grind up skills and gather materials for the next phase. Phase 2 - The market opens for venders who are part of the market's development (as listed above). We begin to change the settlement and terraform/lay down the foundation for the endgame market design. Our sellers open their venders so that other players may buy their wares. The final market design is being developed currently, which will be completed at phase 3. During phase 2 we will begin building with whatever skill sets we have gained at that time. This phase is most likely going to take the following 1-2 months to set up. Phase 3 - The beginnings of the endgame marketplace are in place, and just need to be completed over time as we get higher skill levels. The marketplace has been changed to accommodate sellers from all across the server. We fully open to the public and connect our establishment to other settlements via highways. We install a wagoner for shipments. We begin selling bulk materials and horses. We open our services to the entire server, such as sermon group inclusion, public mine, etc. As we reach phase 3, villagers who have kept up with their roles in the development of the market are free to move out and start their own settlements. They will be able to keep their house, title, and role in the marketplace, as well as their special market merchant spot for as long as they remain active on the server. They are free to pursue other endeavors and aren't expected to stay at the marketplace forever. Anyone who leaves early or fails to help the settlement adequately before that happens would give up their slot to someone else. *update* Our project is as large and ambitious as ever, so feel free to join up with us. How to sign up: Send me (Hammer) a pm with your discord ID so that I can send you an invite to our channel. Also include which role you want to have, or if you would like to be a general helper. If you don't want to use discord then you can send your Wurm Online username and email address so we can keep contact for important developments. I'll also use your email to share market spreadsheets with you. I won't use it for any other purposes, I promise. You may also message me in Wurm Online on Yekrut to discuss more information. If it's a high difficulty role you need to tell me why you think you could do a good job and how much experience you have doing that. Some roles will require some experience and others will require little or none. You can send a nickname if you don't want anyone to see your character name in advance (so nobody else takes it when the server opens). If I think you'll do a good job I'll add you to the list. You should sign up for 2 or 3 roles if you think you will be able to handle all of them. You can also sign up as backup if you want to help the primary person with that task. If there's a role you would like but it isn't listed, send me a message and maybe we can add yours. Your ad hominem attack does your point no justice. I am certainly far from part of the Wurm old guard that you are describing. A large part of my Wurm PvP experience was being the only member of HotS, and by far the lowest skilled player on Chaos. I have had my starter gear robbed by players that could easily one-shot me. I was the exact kind of person you are trying to protect with your "no consequences" policies. But regardless, if PvP is supposed to allows us to simulate warfare, then there need to be lines of production that can be interrupted. If people can generate infinite gear and materials free of consequence, the only way to defeat your enemies is to wait for them to get bored of the purposeless PvP and quit. You can't win a war of attrition against someone who cannot experience attrition because the game mechanics make it so easily avoidable. Think about how valuable the starter 50ql sword is going to be in the early days of PvP, when no one can make anything better. Kingdoms are going to live and die based on who can manage to hold onto those swords. And the first time someone is able to craft something better, it's going to be a major turning point for their kingdom. Every soldier and crafter has immense value under this system. Even the newest player has an effect on the world. Now imagine, instead, a few weeks in, someone teleports in from the PvE server with hundreds of 50+ quality weapons and armor, the skills to craft stone walls, and all of the stone and mortar one could ever need to build a fortress. Suddenly, a kingdom has everything they need to steamroll the others, and the PvP players had absolutely no way to influence this outcome. If these resources had to be gained on the PvP server itself, you have ways to influence the outcome. You can steal their swords, or their iron, or collapse their mines. You can push the enemy off of valuable land. That is a true PvP experience, and I think that's what most people would want out of Wurm PvP: a way to truly influence the world with strategy and warfare. If the key to making an impact on the PvP server is deeding off the most valuable land on the PvE server, and grinding alone until you can produce infinite weapons and dirt walls that stretch miles into the air, the PvP experience will be doomed to fail.

It is a great trailer and if I saw it as a brand new person then I would really want to play the game. There is a but though! The trailer in my view shows what wurm could be like IF everything was used to its full potential. So fully built up towns with decked out buildings. A full player base that is interactive with each other. Major roleplay would also be going on, I feel. That and a full on community vibe across the server. The trailer in my view was one that was made with love of the game. It shows that it was made with real passion for wurm and wanting to show it at its best but that could also create unrealistic expectations. I would like to create food at my table, as it shows in the video. (Unless you can already do this?!?!?) I have not tried. There is a real example of an expectation after watching the video. I saw some things in the trailer that left me wondering if they are real features of the game and I just have not found out about them yet.... If they are not a part of the game then that might leave me with some disappointment. Mostly because it looked cool and I wanted to try it out.

Firstly, our new provider is fully stocked on server capacity so we're not worried about that. Secondly, keep in mind that Steam is full access to ALL servers. We're rolling out a new cluster WITH the launch but that doesn't mean that Steam users can only play on this new cluster! Anywho, back to my server closet. The hamsters call.

Not even just that we can and will find out damage values of gear in time like has been done in the past and within no time we will know based on feeling what gear works better so keeping it hidden serves only to keep the less informed and newer players in the dark while benefiting the rest

That trailer is bloody amazing! Great work! I hope it brings more players to Wurm Online, because we need more players in big communities in the game, like the trailer shows, instead of hermits with 10 deeds around several servers and a dead world, except for an excess of spiders and trolls.

Thank you so much everyone, I'm so glad you liked it! ❤️ By the way, I wrote the text in such a hurry that I completely forgot to mention something very important, namely - that I would have NEVER been able to make this trailer without the help of Samool, who tirelessly made me tool after tool after tool to get those camera shots, to set up characters and a long list of other things. So thank you once again Samool for all your help! Next Tuesday, instead of my traditional Wurm Roulette stream, I will instead be doing a "Wurm Roulette" of the trailer locations and we'll be going through each scene as I show how it was built, how it was filmed and also the tools that Samool made for me to get those set up etc. So if you're curious to see how this trailer was made, come watch on Tuesday.

Great job! I sent it to a few of my non-wurm friends and it's catching some eyes already.

I had to look this one up, because I had no idea what you were trying to say.. 1st of all, I'm not into pokemon. I do want to thank you to take your time coming on this topic to make an amazing contribution (read: insult) to it. Could you explain it a bit better at wich point you figured out I was a noob? Or was it just a bad joke in trying to be funny at the expense of someone else?

It's a pity about Rumble. We were going to work on a new jungle biome and everything. And I liked Heartland. :(

Let's get the names right rather than worrying about a competition. We are literally trying to revive the game and names can be more important than people think. If we take the competition over the actual names themselves, we have a potential losing situation with the game itself. The point should be to have 2 good names for the servers. That's it. It shouldn't matter the method so long as the names are good. These names were not good.

Literally made Wurm World News back in 2014 , - note this village was built with all brand new chars, no veteran chars were allowed at the time Lit

Just to let you all know that the chap who built the shed showed up and very kindly granted me ownership with no fuss. The issue is resolved and all is well in the world. Thanks all for your support.

I will pay 5 silver to the owner of this shed once the shed has been removed and Ajala has gotten her deed back. Just give your name to Ajala and let her know as you blow up the shed and once she confirms she was able to redeed, mail me a woodscrap for 5 silver. Now you have something to gain by blowing up this shed. Ajala, welcome back and let me know if you'd like help rebuilding. This offer expires if Ajala gives up and deeds elsewhere.
