Agree completely that the poll results are likely heavily skewed... NO way in hell at least 30 real people liked that name.

Let's get the names right rather than worrying about a competition. We are literally trying to revive the game and names can be more important than people think. If we take the competition over the actual names themselves, we have a potential losing situation with the game itself. The point should be to have 2 good names for the servers. That's it. It shouldn't matter the method so long as the names are good. These names were not good.

No. Just, no. You may actually notice if you look that there wasn't any great "reverse the decision" call at all. There were a lot of people saying they didn't like the choice. Once the devs asked "should we keep it" THEN people said "no". There is a wee issue here of you spending quite while explaining in pretty strong terms your opinion that others shouldn't express their opinion strongly.

Ah right, I completely forgot how 297 different people, exactly 90.0% of people who came and voted, is only 'some people', and not an overwhelming majority of everyone who cares about the matter. What you meant to say is that one small part of the results will be changed if the vast majority of the community really dislikes it. You're just completely misrepresenting the situation, Amadee. This is a huge majority of the playerbase, and the winners aren't losing their prizes. They're still getting their 25s, their 6 months premium, and as champIAN points out, they're still getting bragging rights for naming the spawn towns. What is happening here that you are choosing to so plainly ignore, is that CCAB is actually being responsive to the playerbase, recognizing that a wildly unpopular choice may have been made, and giving people an opportunity to show whether that unpopularity is as you say, just among a few noisy people, or is across everyone who cares to have a say (which it is). The competition wasn't a joke, nor is the whole issue. The competition was a great idea, someone or some people at CCAB chose names they liked. The community expressed great concern that those names, one of them in particular, do not suit their intended purpose in the game, so CCAB listened, and allowed the community to help shape the legacy of wurm. That's all there is to it. As lotus said:

Hi all, The question in the title is pretty clear. What's your game plan? I've seen some people post already, most of them about making a big market, village or dwarven home. So basically making a home for themselves early on. Are there any of you with a different approach? As for me.. I can finally start hardcore on a fresh and wild online! server. That means 5 seconds in game, after having a look around, I will throw away everything on me! Oh yes.. no starting tools, compass, toolbelt, tent, rope, not even a steel and flint (and that's a pita). I know it will have a negative effect on my progress (read: skilling) the first couple of days, but it's an idea I tried on unlimited a couple of times and now the time has come to do it on the real deal! After the initial struggle I will set up a base camp to get up some of the most important skills to roam around the land in search of a sweet spot. Once I find that spot I will take it on me to start a village, essentially a picture I have in my head. Alone at first.. But in the back of my mind I see/have a vision of a 1 deed community that have fun playing this game together. We will see how far we can get and I'm pretty sure I will enjoy the journey ahead! Ooh.. one last and important thing in my gameplay I will stick by! No alts!!! Even though I want to jump into this game as a solo player, I will always need other people since (as an example) I can't play as a priest and do the things I want to do. Something I want to make a rule in the village that's envisioned. So that's my story... what about yours?

HI Everyone! With the announcement of the new server names, we did receive some feedback regarding the name choices. With that in mind, we've opened this poll to gauge your opinions on whether we should pick new names for each server, or keep them. If we do rename a server, it will be an internal decision, but the names we have chosen already will still exist in-game. The starting town for the PvE server would become Heartland, and a kingdom will have their starting town on the PvP server named Rumble. We'll let this voting go for 48 hours and review at the time of closure! If you do vote for new names, the people who entered the new name picked will also receive the reward of 6 months premium and 25s

Of course. There would be no highways on Wurm if only deed owners (most times of the day absent and often not caring for infrastructure) could decide about the course of a highway. Happens. The best way is communicating with each other. Noone and everyone has the chair. As the environment outside deeds (with some limitations for perimeters) is free to be terraformed, this also extends to highway building. In case of conflicts the concerned parties have to negotiate and find a solution, maybe with GM mediation. There are no special rights for locals and deed owners other than those resulting from deed or structure ownership. But in case of a mediation, each side has to explain their motives. And of course, the motives of locals to preserve their environs are legitimate and obvious. Somebody from afar would have to offer good reasons why one or the other road routing would be necessary or preferable. A highway, legitimately connecting deeds or routes, can indeed not easily be removed altogether, only rerouted.

My entries were Defiance for PvP and Endeavour for PvE. I don't care about prizes or bragging rights, I just wanted servers with appropriate names that fit with the existing naming scheme.

but wurm should be trying to please the 90% instead of the 10%... why do you think wurms numbers have been steadily declining over the years since the announcement of Wurm Unlimited... now with RMT ban its slowly starting to come back, but very slowly

Promptly is a vague term used to cover a wide variety of loopholes. This was most likely done to combat people like you, who actively attempt to exploit the rules to be more to your benefit. I think the most useful definition for you to go by would be "as quickly as you are able to." And no, that does not mean as quickly as is convenient for you based on your own ideas of what being able to do means. That means as fast as is physically possible with no breaks or slowdowns. My suggestion to you in such cases where you know it will take several hours or days to complete, is to create the detour in it's entirety before violating the preexisting highway, so that when the first catseye crumbles and the highway is broken, it may only take you a few minutes to reconnect to your created detour.

Greetings Wurmians! Today's Valrei International comes with special reveals and the winners of the server name competition! Besides naming the new lands, we have designated the new cluster as the Northern Freedom Isles, with the existing server cluster renamed to Southern Freedom Isles. What's in a name? And the winners are... *drumroll* Congratulations! These two players will go down in history with the ability to brag about naming these new, wild, lands of the Northern Freedom Isles. That's the key! With any great game comes amazing Key art, which is used as promo material, box art, and across social media! The lovely Malena a.k.a. Katspurr has outdone herself in creating this fantastic scene of a troll raid on a Wurmian castle! We asked her to elaborate more on her work as well as share some early concepts: Malena If you would like to use this as your desktop background, we have you covered! https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/18WH2AnZEPRDfg4EQAk-KNfSmNegfzZLf?usp=sharing We've seen a few other questions about the launch time and whether a map dump will be available so thought we'd answer them quickly below: Right now we don't have an exact time of day for the launch but expect it to be evening Central European Time. A map dump will not be available upon launch, but an in-game map will be. Target Window Icons Some of the target window icons came out early, and with the old UI looked a little... off. Rest assured, the new UI handles them much better, and we'd love to show off the full set! Check them out below: Wurm Launch Trailer! The launch trailer has been completed and is ready for release leading up to the launch of the game on Steam on the 24th, it's a fantastic trailer, and it even makes ME want to play Wurm! It's going to be amazing so keep your eyes peeled! If you haven't wishlisted Wurm on Steam already, you can do so right here! https://bit.ly/WOSTEAM Wurm keeps moving forward and we're kicking into the final gear in time for the launch on Steam, so hold on tight and keep on Wurming! Regards, Retrograde & the Wurm team

(impalong) ~September 13th-19th~ (Postponed) A’hoy mates, My name be Cap’n Leander, and i be inviting ye to a parlay at me deed, savvy? e’ll be all manner of goins on. Everything from fighting, drinking, imping, prayin, drinking, and of course fightin, just to name a few things… What's an Impalong? It's a community event/festival that's hosted by someone on their deed, often times they have themes to match the season, holiday, or hold some special meaning to the host. (for me its international talk like a pirate day sept 19th.) The word impalong was created long before i became a wurmian, but it refers to the action of gathering and improving items for your fellow Wurmian, it is an event where crafters and priests from across Wurm join together to improve/enchant other players gear for free. Everyone is welcome to work on their skills at the event. In addition to the imping/enchanting, there are various other things such as games and events, prize giveaways, contests, and sometimes even GM's drop in to spawn a few mobs on unsuspecting Festival-goers. Location (where to find us) we are situated right on the coast in the almost direct south of Xanadu south of Lormere at S15 The Calendar Sept 12 8pm eastern(us)time imper and staff meeting Sept 13 Doors Open (Welcome All) Sept 14 Sept 15 Sept 16 The Grand Hedge opens Sept 17 sept 18 Sept 19 (International Talk Like a Pirate Day) final day doors close at midnight (us) Sept 20 Clean up Daily Event Schedule Discord Server https://discord.gg/5RQGPAY The Deed A very well designed deed built to make one feel as if they are in a modern medieval coastal village. All of the major activities are gonna be right in the bay area it features a small arena for some battles and other challenges such as the Champions Challenges. We have a grand three story community workshop filled with everything one would need to improve any item, including large items. be sure to mind the priests at the Monastery, some of them have been standing there for days and it shows. the token house is at the end of the main road north right at the shore there are pointing signs leading right to it. We have a wagoner on deed at the north gate along with a couple merchants and a trader. behind the merchants are my digable resource tiles. i have clay, peat, and moss, there. The Community Workshop (Imping facility) The Rules Events/Games Materials Provided (donations are also accepted) Festival Staff (PM one of the people listed below when they are online or in local for refueling forges, returning your items, getting you more imping material, and check in at the inn.) Impers Jolly Rogue Token a small token of my appreciation to everyone who attended. Prizes Donator List (a very special thank you to these people.) this is a work in progress so expect it to change a lot as i overcome problems and add new and more info be sure to follow this post to stay up to date as to whats new.

Since I figure we'll be getting a bunch of old vets that will only play part time why don't we build another version of the Pristine Wurm Academy to help teach newbies.

Here we are again, and its almost that time of the year again for the annual Summer Friend-A-Long! This event is brought to you by Dragon Beard Markets, the Academy Network Alliance of Pristine, and random donors like you out there! This years Event will be held July 24th to the 29th. DUE TO STEAM LAUNCH I AM ADJUSTING THE DATE FORWARD A WEEK, THE NEW DATE WILL BE July 17th - 22nd. Hopefully this window will allow most folks the chance to attend and join in and the foolery of it all. Some of you may be asking what is an Imp-along? Well basically is a community event where everyone gets together to imp and cast for each other for free! Anyone can come, anyone can help imp. Often people just come to grind there skill for free. You don't have to be able to get to 70q imps, just do what you can and someone else will finish up the work! The only real restrictions is on channeling skill to help prevent shattered items. Made some changes to the deed based on feedback. Build a whole new arena that is designed around accommodating val and jackal mobs. I build a new tower for "Wurmian Lawn Darts" this year now that I know people have no problems flinging themselves to there likely death for prizes. We have collected a massive amount of materials, cotton, body bags, booze and prizes. I hope to see you all at turn up for the fun and games this year! Were going to commemorate the new arena with something special this year.... As I always say, If you didn't die at the imp-along you did it wrong! Please keep and eye on this thread as i will be updating it regularly with details of events, changes, whatever.... Event is ended for this year! When: DUE TO STEAM LAUNCH I AM ADJUSTING THE DATE FORWARD A WEEK, THE NEW DATE WILL BE July 17th - 22nd. Where: Pristine, T16, Friendship Bay deed. Map: https://prnt.sc/jdif1w - In game Map location. Map: http://prntscr.com/svwrts - Terrain View You can also plot to Dragon Beard from any highway, then just follow the highway a few hundred tiles to the deed. Imping Materials: All materials provided will be stocked in the resource carts/wagons next to each station, the general public will not have access to the bulk of materials, please try to NOT COMBINE tiny lumps like silver, gold, electrum, and the like for imping larger items like weapons and shields. Material usage will be alot higher, and we will get alot less imps out of the total stock of that material, less used is more for everyone! If you need a refill on something please ask in local or a "Wurm Lord" for refill. This year we will be providing some higher then 70q Materials during the last few days as sort of a reward for those people who stuck around and the work flow slows down a bit more. Expect to see up to 90q Logs, Iron, and maybe leather available for further imps towards the end of the event. Getting YOUR items imped, casted or bloods mixed: So these events work because people enjoy helping each other out, but a very important catch to that is that they do not want to feel abused or taken advantage of! Thoe it may seem like things are hard to track that would be a mistake to assume. The veteran impers and caster keep a close eye on who is dropping what and taking advantage of peoples generosity. Every event I end up taking peoples items for taking advantage of others (after a fair warning, if its not obvious abuse). The veterans who help out and imp/cast at these things will not hesitate to PM me if they think there being taken advantage of and I totally encourage this. As soon as they feel taken advantage of these things are dead! NAME YOUR ITEMS WITH YOUR COMPLETE CHARACTER NAME! Nothing else is needed, just make sure you move it to the correct locations as work progresses. ANY items that are not properly named will be secured and probably forfeit since identification is difficult. Creators tag will NOT be relied on. To be clear this means bring your existing gear, not create 1 of everything for every alt and bring it for free work. LIMITATIONS: A couple of weapons, a set of horse shoes, a couple of hammers, 1 of most other items. Do not create your items on site, particularly with the higher q imping mats. The only times items should be created is to replace shattered ones. So be sure you bring everything! If you have some unique bloods you would like mixed or applied feel free to bring them as well, please keep it to 10 or less, that should be enough to completely imbue a single tool, If you would like to provide the salt then we can do more mixes. Common Mistakes: As mentioned before be sure ALL your items are correctly named with your character. Find the station relevant to the skill required for your equipment. For example Hammers in Blacksmithing, Swords in Weapon smithing etc. Most are pretty obvious. Some of the most commonly misplaced items are: Carving Knife, Sickle, and Scythe witch are actually Weapon smithing. (Cooking) Knife and Leather Knife are actually Blacksmithing. New fishing rods are Fine carpentry, and the legacy rods are Carpentry. Fishing Reels are Jewelry Smithing, with the exception of the deep water reel witch is Blacksmithing. Secured/Overflow Item Recovery: *NEW* If one of your items has been moved to overflow please ask a "Wurm Lord" to retrieve it for you. Be sure to tell the the precise name of the shelf its on so they can find it quickly! For example "Casting Overflow SW3" will tell them what floor, what corner and what shelf your item is on. To avoid having your items secured try and make sure your checking on them and moving them as needed so that other peoples work can be processed. Be patient if you need something returned, everyone is a volunteer, and there may not always be someone around to retrieve your item. Any items left over anywhere that are properly named will be mailed back to there owner shortly after the close of the event. Deed Settings: *NEW* Drop AND Take are enabled on deed outside of buildings again this year for the purposes of butchering and looting during arena events. Please keep this in mind and do not leave your possessions outside un-attended, if you move more then a few tiles away your items could be taken by anyone. Treat is as in the wild! If Trash becomes a problem I may reconsider this policy and disallow looting. Deed Bonus's: *NEW* If your a visitor of the server and want to take advantage of a maxed out enchanting and rarity window bonus you can join the village, this is also a good option of you forgot to bring a tent! If you would like to join just PM VirusMD to get an invite What is expected of you as a patron: Be polite and be respectful! Don't forget to put your characters NAME ON ALL YOUR ITEMS! Cant stress this enough. Anything not properly named is likely to be lost or stuffed in an overflow bin, and once moved with no name, there is basically no way to identify it as yours. Please try and remove your items promptly once imped/casted to avoid having your items secured in overflow. You do NOT need to label them with what cast/imp you want, just your name. Just make sure you place them in the correct container. Do NOT abuse people's generosity! Don't bring 10 or even 5 of the same item for imping/casting. The only real exception to this might be horse shoes. Anyone caught taking advantage will forfeit there items and be asked to leave. And the veteran impers do know what to look for, i removed almost 100 items last year due to abuse, and it was veterans who tipped me off. Do NOT sell items that were done for you at the impalong. Its about helping people out, not taking advantage of someone else's work to put coin in your pocket. Getting items casted is at your own risk! Thoe the priest will be required to have at least 70 channeling and demonstrate so with there 70+ title. Shatters can and will happen at an event like this. Item quality plays a big in this so if your going to get something casted, consider imping it first. If an item is shattered, and its reproducible on site, feel free to ask someone with skill to re craft it for you. You should not need to pick any items up that are not your (nor will you be able to inside a building) If your items are moved to overflow please contact a "Wurm Lord" Items are only returned to the character named on it! Also feel free to help imp items even if you don't have that skill to 70. The only real restriction is channeling. Everyone is welcome to help out! Consider this an opportunity to grind your skills and no expense to you other then time. Mats and favor are provided so go crazy imp or cast all the things! When you complete and imp or cast please call it out in local to the owner something like "/me VirusMD your pickaxe imp is done!" This should help keep things flowing particularly for items waiting to receive multiple casts. Please check on your items frequently when possible to avoid having them moved into overflow storage. What is expected as an Imper or Caster at the Friend-A-Long: Please do NOT improve items that are not correctly labeled! Instead report them to an admin to be secured. This is considered abuse since we cannot tell whos item is being imped. All of the above + PLEASE name your lumps/materials if you have to put them back in the forge etc 70+ in your imping skills of choice is recommended but feel free to chip in with whatever skills you have for imping. The final 2 days or so there will be higher q mats available for higher q imps, assuming the workflow is going smoothly. 70+ Channeling skill is required to be permitted to cast on other people's items. You should be sure to wear your 70+ channeling title Sermons: Sermons are volunteer led, if you wish to participate in the sermon group please ask for a sermon team invite in local, and get further information for slotting inside that channel. Friendship Inn and Lounge: Need a place to sleep off a hard days work? Hide from a GM (good luck), or just get out of the way? The Friendship inn and Lounge, has a pleasant little relaxation area on the room with a wide variety of booze for you discerning wurmian hooligans. The inn is capable of bedding 80 characters in 70 secure rooms with storage options. If you need a secure room for your stay please make a post requesting a room, be sure to include your character(s) names in the post. There is also a large piece of land set aside for "Tent City" Just outside the inn on the sandy beach area next to the docking (parking) slips on the East end of the event location. The Deed: The imping hall itself it a 5 floor (3 double floors) pottery building with slate/marble decor. Broken into 3 floors dedicated to various tasks. The First floor is the now the casting/sermon area, I've broken all the spells into 4 main groups, based on the spell/priests that cast it. each group has at least 2-4 dedicated altars PER priest for that category, the more common priest like Vynora/Fo. So no worries about tripping over each other at the altar! All organized into corners, In the center of it all is another ring of altars, surrounding a rare altar for the sermon goers, and the building is designed in such a way, that everyone below you should be counted as listeners for HUGE faith ticks!in the corners you will find some relaxing area's to afk/get out of the way in along with stairwells to the other floors. The second floor is for Non smithing related imps, broken into 4 main area's depending on the skill used. The 3rd is now the forge area based on feedback from previous years. Mainly smoke in the face of folks working on the second floor, the forge area is 24x forges nestled together in a large group in the center At this time we have about 1.1 Million Favor worth of veggies ready to go! Want to help chop? no? good! we don't need you!, because@ChampagneDragonis amazing and did nearly ALL the chopping, with some support from Ladygodiva! Apparently she likes doing this, so yah, amazing! Champagnedragon also does it for your precious silvers, so if you need stuff veggies, need them chopped chopped or just want some cordage, look no further then her! Great attitude, very fast, great rates. And a special thanks to the group of dedicated farmers to help with the job of growing 200k veggies.... Then 200k more when they nerfed them.... Ouch! Thanks to Almostsolitude, Morde, Dragonshearts, Ladygodiva, and prob some more I forgot about for tending the absurdly large 5 field 2600 tiles of farmland we were tending. Ship Imps: If your getting your ship improve PLEASE enable passenger for "Everyone" to help out the impers and prevent accidental drownings. The WEST end of the deed is where docks are located for people who would like there ships imped as well. Please do not park here if your ship is over 70q. Please move your ship once it has been imped help keep congestion down in the area for the impers. Ship Parking: The EAST end of the deed houses several new docking teirs that will house many ships, if your ship does not need to be impled please be sure to park on the EAST side of the deed, where "Tent City" is located just East of the Friendship Inn and Lounge. Blood Mixing: We have a large supply of source salt for potion making, so feel free to bring your bloods for mixing. Hopefully well get a couple high skill volunteers who can do them for us! Got a nice NS and Alchemy? drop me a line here or PM me if your willing to help out with mixes and imbues. Please keep the number of bloods your having mixed to 10 or less, this should be enough to get a single tool completely imbued. If you have extra source salt we can mix additional bloods with that. I've put a lot of time into archaeology, but I've started to get a bit more curious. As far as I can see there are 3 main stages for each item created; I've listed these below with the most prominent type of skilltick gained during the activity. (1) Shard Discovery - Archaeology Skill (2) Shard Uncover - Restoration Skill (3) Combination - Restoration Skill I'm wondering, at which stage the following are decided: (a) Item Material (b) Item Enchant (c) Item Runes Does anyone know factors impacting the distribution of these (for example, age of deed on a tile etc) From what has been said before, uncovered shards have some rune/enchant info on them (not sure if these always pass on, or if some roll is used), which is why they are not bulkable.

The GM team try to work as mediators in these situations, if there are disputes they will review the situation as a team. If someone is known to be disruptive, or not even within their local, then they are going to take different action to a dispute within people in local. The best advice I can give is if you are doing something that is off your deed, and others are upset by it, don't do it.

yeah I think i need to redo the model, made it to fit in the window space but I am thinking keeping the size an amount the game prefers, like bdew said multiple of 4, would be better. image sizes multiple of 4 is probably enough without changing model, probably. I love you added frames to the images 😃 took your image and did 1 of them as 420 x 560 pixels, i'll make sure to edit in about the multiple of 4 pixels in the topic.

The banners have gathered... for the first time in history the three kingdom meet under a shared roof to discuss the common enemy. The name Rumble, only this once shall they allowe a truce on the pvp realm until this enemy is defeated and a new name picked for the server! Jokes aside I think Heartland was still in the "theme" of wurm and wouldnt mind personally having it on one of the servers. But rumble never felt fitting for this medieval setting in my opinion even though I can see why it was picked for pvp looking at the origin of the word, condolences to the ppl who got their names picked and might have to suffice with being a starter town instead. I hope they can rejoice in that they will atleast have the rewards secured no matter the outcome in the end

You do not need to be playing to have a forum account. When the PvP discussions (sometimes dubbed as "forum PvP" 😎 ) raged in 2018/19, nearly half of the posters even bragged not to have played Wurm for some time, some for years, even some alts having forum accounts. So there is no proof how significant the voters` turnout is and how it is related to active players. Insofar, Amadee is right. I would suppose anyway that the backlash against the chosen names was widespread. I feel sorry for the winners of the contest and find the reaction overblown but would not have voted for those names.

Jesus christ its like a school talent show competition. The chosen names didnt please the overwhelming majority of the player base. Don't take it to heart, you still get your prize and the names will still be used for the starter towns. I know i must suck but hey ho, there were plenty of players out there who didnt win and arent complaining about not winning.

You're asking for absolute rules for something that depends on the situation. If someone needs to move a 20 tile long stretch of highway 5 tiles over because they don't want it in their perimiter, in a largely unpopulated area, that's probably a quick, low impact change, that won't take long and won't impact others. If someone wants to reroute a highway around the far side of a mountain, that's probably going to need longer, and impact more people. This is like asking, "how do I play nice?" - it depends on the situation and the people involved. Similarly, 'promptly' depends on the directive in question. Given the lead-in, I'm guessing you were told to do something (or to undo something) by a GM, and then got into an argument with them about how soon it was supposed to be done. Possibly because they were working on the shortest possible solution, and you wanted to do things in a different way? I can't say I've been on the receiving end of much in the way of GM directives, but my experience has generally been that they're pretty clear when you're being told to do something.

You're still getting the full 25s, 6 month premium subscription time, and your suggested name will be the name of one of the towns on the PvP map. You didn't get '2nd prize', you got the full prize offered, and they even kept your name in a major form to maintain that aspect of legacy as well. Perhaps you could take a moment to realize that while a few members of the wurm team liked your name, not only does it not fit in with Wurm server name conventions, but it is wildly unpopular. This is nothing about you, purely the fact that a name that you liked, and a small handful of other people liked, is something the overwhelming majority of the community does not think is a good name for a wurm server. Congratulations on winning, and getting a great prize, but perhaps maybe don't whine about the fact that CCAB chose to be responsive to the desires of 90% of the playerbase.

Its ok people don't dislike you they dislike your entry, you still get the prize so what does it matter. Id prefer a team that can accept they made a bad choice than one that sticks to their guns and runs with an obviously bad decision out of stubbornness, like the rift changes.

First: People of color actually existed in medieval Europe. The Moors of Spain were an active part of Europe from 711 until 1492 (right in the middle of the Wurm "time and place") After they were expelled from Spain, many stayed in neighboring parts of Europe. Hundreds lived in Tudor England. These moorish europeans were prominent subjects of Munich sculptor Erasmus Grasser, whose work graced castles throughout northern europe. Date: 1480. Much of this was stamped out of later historical records, in some cases even later painting over the skin tones in paintings! Jesus was white! The three wise man were white! 'But this is Northern Europe! By which we mean, Swedish (except anytime we want something in the game that is not Swedish!') There were no black Swedes back then!' In other words, the Moors may have been a major part of historical medieval europe, but we're not counting them! It's not THAT europe! There are many many many things in the game that are not "homegrown northern european", and especially not "Swedish". Some are more than a little out of place for a "medieval northern Europe" theme. A few are items brought to northern europe by global traders, many of whom were also of a wide ethnic diversity, but these items were NOT common to the time and place: Basil is native to central Africa through Southeast Asia. Corn is from Mexico. Potatoes are from Peru. Rice is from China. Tomatoes are from central and south america. Cabbage is native to the Mediterranean (as are those moors!). Cucumbers are from India. Garlic is from Middle Asia. Carrots are from Persia. Rosemary is from the Mediterranean. And of course, as all Game of Thrones book readers know, there are no lemon trees in the North. Yet there are lemon and orange trees growing wild throughout northern Swedish-style Wurm? I could make this list REALLY REALLY long. But we put these items in the game anyway because it makes the game more interesting and enjoyable for the players. In those cases, we don't argue whether each and every one of these are "historically accurate" because it is, after all, "just a game." Like it or not, Wurm is already diversified. Not everything in the game is 100 percent historically accurate, even for a completely made up world and place. Even if a few wealthy European nobility had access to some of these via traders, they were very rare and very expensive and not obtainable by the common folk, and certainly not growing in their backyard gardens. The commonfolk of europe did not find these foraging through the grass in front of their cottage. The wealthy did not get them that way either. We won't even get into the issues of dragons and trolls. We gave up arguing years ago (thankfully) whether female characters "historically" wore armor and wielded swords. After all, Joan of Arc! Queen Boudica of Britain! Brynhild the Valkyrie! All them totally badass Viking Women! The fact that a huge part of the Wurm player base are in fact female, probably played a major part in that. "Fine. Ok, whatever, woman can have swords and wear armor and be 'equal', sigh." Now the developers say they are trying to open Wurm to a broad new market of gamers. Almost every other "fantasy roleplaying game" based on medieval life, allows a broad ethnic diversity so that all players can feel they have a place in that game. Neverwinter Nights from 2002 allows very dark skintones, and player avatars that are obviously african or arabic or oriental. Dark Ages of Camelot from 2001, which like Wurm also is supposedly based on "northern european medieval settings," you can play a Saracen, who have darker arabic/moorish coloration. You can play a Erudite in Everquest (1999), a Redguard in Daggerfall, Morrowind and Skyrim, a Gharu'ndim or a Sho in Asheron's Call. It doesn't matter whether you call those "races" or simply allow a wider range of skin colors for generic humans. Almost every "medieval" roleplaying game except Wurm, embraces a wide diversity of skintones for its playerbase. It doesn't even need to be explained in "the lore". We are way past that stage, we have been for some time. Yes, there are a certain subset of gamers who hate abhor detest any sort of "diversification" in their games, books, movies, comics (as well as in their schools, places of employment, and general society). I do not believe they represent the majority of Wurm players, and I am not going to waste time arguing with them. But for the rest of us ... do we really want to tell this "new generation of Wurm players" that we are trying to promote the game to, that this game is only representing people with the most absolute pale skin colors possible? Or do we want the game to fail just so we can keep up this "fantasy" of only having pure milk white skin tones? Is that also the message that the new owners of the game, Gamechest Group, want to be promoting? Do we as the playerbase, want this to be -our- message? Is this really who we want to be? It's not too late, even now. Just change the current skin tones to a wider range than "pale to somewhat less pale", and give every preexisting one free silver mirror so they can adjust themselves if they ended up, horrors, being too dark. If we can easily do this with gods and priests, why can't we do this with skintones?
