I hear a few grumbles from newer players about how hard it is to get started in Wurm. I think we need a thread about how the current Wurm Vets got their first break. I think you'll find most of them didn't hit the ground running, but clawed their way up doing odd jobs and getting a leg up from friends and village mates. Their successes were often hard-earned, because back then a 'fast track' was unheard of. From my experience any successes were on a personal level, vast wealth was never expected and high skills were admired but not deemed necessary to have fun. I'll pick just one skill out of the 138 available - animal husbandry: I've always loved horses, and, ever since I first saw the Wurm horses, I guess I fell in love with them. I was a villager when I got started breeding horses on Pristine, it wasn't my deed, but I was gifted the use of a field to breed some horses, with the condition that I do the horse breeding and would provide good horses for the carts and wagons on deed, but I had a lot of help.. I remember an exciting cart journey out to the Steppe, where I was shown where to find wild horses - I could not believe my eyes - lots of grey horses and they were free for the taking. I grabbed a rope, picked out a few and ran back home behind the cart leading my new horses. Breeding up these horses took time, and it was a joint project, if anyone produced a foal with traits we'd pick the best and breed them to try to get more good traits. I became stuck at 3 traits for a long while - I was not yet premium, and I did not know my low skill may have been stopping me adding any more traits. My village mate who was premium used to tell me the traits and I'd write them down against each horse name in a notebook. A lady up the road was breeding 5-speeds. At the time, I had no idea how she was doing it - I thought her AH skill must have been very high. She put an ad out over the freedom sever "Free 4-speeds to good home!" We jumped in the cart and set off as fast as our little 3-speeds would take us. As we travelled she typed the traits of the animals into our chat windows - We picked out three straight-4-speed stallions, white and gold. After that I started to breed my first 4-speed filly foals, and in due course I learned how to breed 5-speeds from 4-speeds with all 5 speed traits between them. Eventually I learned how to breed 5-speeds from two 3 speeds, but by then I was selling 5-speeds on Pristine. All this way before I went premium or got my own deed. When I went premium this opened a world of new adventures. It was exciting watching my AH skill rise and being able to see more and more traits. I got my own deed with lots more space for the horses. This did not happen overnight, it took a long time - then many months to build up a good herd, yet I still have the first named horse I got on Pristine back in 2013. Animal Husbandry is just one skill in Wurm - and it is by no means my main skill - yet all the skills are full of memories like these. What I'm trying to say is that success in Wurm does not come handed on a plate - although you will find as I did, that many more-advanced players are generous and eager to help new players get their first break. I owe a lot to the good people who were there when I started out and many more that I have met along the way. So calling all vets - how did you get your first break?
  3. 5 points
I had a very similar intro to Animal Husbandry as you! Not sure what counts as a vet these days, but I started in 2013 and took a couple of longer breaks along the way. Carrying on the theme and picking a different skill, though, Carpentry (and later Masonry): I was first lured into Wurm by some very veteran Indy players with a small underdeveloped deed on the (then quite fresh) newish server, Release. I was shown all this empty deeded land and invited to try all the skills and see what caught my heart. I found most of my now-highest skills in those first few weeks, but when I had a go at building myself a little house - that was it for me; I've been a builder, for the love of building, ever since. I built a farmhouse and a stable and a large inn there first, and after several months I flew the nest to found my own deed with my (now) spouse. We found a perfect spot and spent few weeks each taking it in turns to kite spiders and trolls and hellhounds away (learning to run half naked along lake shores and swimming for long stretches to lose pursuers) often dying horrible deaths in the process) while the other worked on getting the guard tower or the first main building up with still pretty low skills and mats. Then, secure in our hidey houses, he started flourishing in fighting and shipbuilding while I built a whole village worth of houses, with coach houses and lovely docks and community kitchens. We're on our fifth deed on Release now, and I'm still a multiple-specialised-buildings village builder - and as with all our previous, we always build gatehouses that let players pass through freely with unlocked towers they can hide from trolls in, because I was super grateful in my first year or so of Wurm for an open gate when I was (so frequently) running for my life.

Allow deep keel ships to be "deed/flag" ships. Only one per character. 1s upkeep. Only decay reduction on interior items. Allows use of bed/forge/oven loaded directly into hold (not nested) and only when moored off-deed or x number of tiles from deed. Respawn point. Allow rowboat to be loaded Allow gates/doors to be rented by hour/day/week/month Permissions can still apply to residents. (eg. allows animal tender to pass unimpeded). Highway rules still apply. on-deed only. landlord deeds adds to upkeep (king's fees) Allow player settlements to appear on in game map Based off of number of citizens, and/or traffic count. Must meet certain criteria (active merchants, highway/port access, available beds, food merchants, altars, specific services) two week cycle to meet or lose qualifications. Voluntary opt-in. Purchasable bartender "food merchant" Linked to a single larder located within x tiles. Can purchase liquid, by volume, from kegs. Make it easier to purchase in game coin (from in-game) in varying increments (not just silver). Improve cost display in Traders, and Merchants. (make the hover over "1s 59c" be the default, and decimal be the tool tip.) Make the trade screen be more painfully obvious of what's going on. Allow vehicles to be marked for sale. Buildable docks. Raise and lower anchor (not carry with you). Must have room in hold. Improve the "full bright" effect for light sources outside of illumination distance. Too subdued in current manifestation. Make ports, towns, and lighthouses vibrant at night at distance. Increase flicker (random intensity changes).

Alright guys, I've decided to dedicate one building each year on my deed to sort of commemorate that year and everything that happened throughout. So please, help me summarize what new stuff happened by adding to the list below so I can gather items to commemorate them. If you have something to add that doesn't fit into a category, please just mention it and I'll add it anyway What I am looking for is anything that's major.... new stuff like tunnels and highways or public projects, events lead by the wurm team, updates that changed things, people who have come or gone in one way or another that should be remembered, kingdoms that were founded or had major changes made to them, and more. If you've managed to get a skill to 100, let me know. If you're the first ever to do so and added a title, PLEASE let me know. Let's have a memorial for a year gone by each year starting now! I will do a lot of research on this throughout the rest of the year of course, to fill and complete the list, but I feel I want to give all of you the option to add what you feel was most important so I'm leaving it mainly blank, waiting for your responses! Gradually, I will add to it on my own and based on the responses in the comments. Events: Total Amount of Slayings in 2019: ??? Impalongs: Friendship Bay Impalong (Friendalong) Pristine 2019 - by ??? I belonged to a scifi second life group that have held weekly tournaments for the last 14 years. They can bring in a handful of visitors or larger gathering of 60+ people. Weapon system used simple player made scripts. Purses are mostly donations from audience, event host, and owners of other “cities”. Mostly for good times, notoriety, and encouraging people to visit their respective cities (to buy from thier merchants). It is common for winner to receive $40-60. Thinking about this made me consider the lack of such events in wurm. I have seen a few forums posts setting events up over the years, and of course I know it is a staple at impalongs, but... nothing continual. They also seem to be rather complicated affairs - at least in writing. So, my question is for players who fought, watched, or set up fights... Beyond the inability to teleport to and from a place - what is the biggest roadblock to setting up simple, routine public fighting tournaments?

Well, we all know it has been suggested before, but how about making a fsb rack so our kitchen gets less littered? Since we already have the code to make the bsb racks it is well mainly just a design thing? Seems kind of odd that we did't get that already. This would really add a huge chunk of QoL to us players!

I was playing Wurm on and off for some time before "break" already, but turning point for me was deciding to buy premium for the first time and using portal to the HoTS Wild. One of first thing I saw was emo looking guy standing on a horse, who happily invited me to my first village after a short conversation. I was hooked pretty quickly after this event, and meet some really nice people who helped me to get into the game.

I've got a full one in my house, which has got around 20k meat, and a few thousand veg, plus various other odds and ends. If you want to separate things by QL (which you will do, when you're a bit farther along in the game), you need to have multiples.

Lack of tactics in one-on-one duals. This.. is typical in non-twitchy MMOs. Tactics are more geared towards group strategy in MMOs. Silently watching or tracking another group and striking when you feel you have an advantage. I'm not sure of the fundamentals Regarding Wurm's combat sytem - it would be hard for me to say what the PVP (or GVG - Group vs Group, KVK- Kingdom vs Kingdom) Metas are. In a perfect set up there would be some version of rock-paper scissors that could change based on the environment of the fight. Maybe a Chaos or Epic vet can detail more. If I'm not mistaken second life type fights are twitchy? I'm not familiar with them.

was invited into the game by Stoneman after being told that there is salvation to be had, following the closure of a minecraft server me he and fablecrafter played on. Spent some time in Stonebrook on Indy, getting my skills up then i got psychologically lynched by a certain someone for eating Stoneman's rare deer because i was hungry and too shy to type in alliance chat. (stone didn't mind after half a day but the bully was relentless) having been KoS'd by this bully on more than one deed, i seriously considered quitting, but built a rowboat instead, which took a very long time and alot of determination. Once built i set off to deli, thinking i need deliverance from hugh so the server should suit me. It was hard to find coastal real estate back then but after some time i settled on the North East and founded a deed called Indigus. (renamed it trinsic once i was self sufficient, recently renamed knightshade). My first break was a rowboat. Once landed I dove head into experimenting with paint and builds till i finally discovered deed planner. The moment i discovered dp everything was a gleeful, creative haze for 3 years and so trinsic was born. never really took to farming although i did enough to stock up. I think the advent of the crafting interface and complimenting the landscape with the right architecture, and all those floorboards and slate slabs i had to make to get rid of the marsh (back when slate slab was the slate brick texture and it took a very long time to make the slabs) was lengthy but fulfilling. Excluding the rowboat, Deed Planner was my first solo break, that which spun the wheel. I highly recommend joining an active recruitment deed until you feel like you should sub. Can't speak for alliances, it took me over 4 years and a move to Exo to find one that i can call family.

Does anyone remember the short lived Challenge server? No? With the devs focusing on Steam, and Budda's departure, i can already see Jackal following it in it's footsteps. Either way, we will be waiting at least a year until the next phase. And with it being Budda's pet project (him leaving was the reason it was unfinished) means that there's a high chance it will just simply fade away. And how the hell does this work anyway? A major dev can simply just leave the team amidst of a supposedly "big" project, thus making all of his work unfinished?! That's just messed up management beyond belief. Other companies at least allow the project to be finished and for the said dev to finish up his work before he leaves the team

That's a good suggestion Muse, however he has a video of trying to launch HERE and it shows he is using the dropdown "Default" profile (not blank), and that screen resolution is already set to Windows Resizeable 800x600, so I think those areas are probably covered...

When you guys teased the whole "after this many jackal beacons are closed a stronghold would spawn" i imagined it would be some nicely terraformed "stronghold" ontop of a mountain or a towering platform above a desert with dirt walls sky high and multiple walls reaching to a giant courtyard where the final battle would take place I wasnt really expecting a 5 minute deedplanner job that just screams "hey guys you know that stronghold we promised players? Ya anyone got any ideas of what to make for it? No? okay give me 5 min il come up with something simple" I just hope that the final fight will be worth it for those who spend all this time destroying beacons and arent just left with a "fancy" rift to murder with a overly tanky and buffed up warmaster at the end that is renamed to jackal king or something silly like that Sorry but this is just yet another nail into the coffin of what could have been a great plan but rushed out and poorly designed thing and yes im being negative not because im angry but because im sad i enjoyed jackal i did what i wanted to do on there even while being slapped in the face by the lack of content and lackluster skill transfer and repetitive beacons that once you seen one you seen them all(why not make higher ql ones spawn the towers the warmaster spawns and such) In the end it just seems like jackal was a cash grab with 1 new main feature being the reason why it even became a thing and its just a pet project blown up to be this big giant thing that looks great from afar but is empty from up close Sorry just sad and wanted to let this out maybe next time make the design of the stronghold be ontop of a mountain with dozens upon dozens of platforms all locked off by magical barriers that people have to fight through to reach the next stage and the next courtyard of this fortress slowly working your way up the mountain past buildings full of loot and monsters to kill and make it seem like your actually going to fight the endboss Something like that might actually make people be happy about jackal and be a unique experience but i know its more work and a lot harder to create something like that and spawn it in by scripts then a flat 43x43 mirrored design

Hi Retro, This thread was about developing the area around SS (it's on Release, though, not Pristine) with a community run deed for new folks. If there's going to be a competition to redo the starter town, then our suggestion to make a nice deed bordering it to welcome new folk (and to compensate for SS not offering them anything much) is no longer needed because presumably the new SS will fill this gap and this particular plan of developing the west lake is redundant if SS is going to be upgraded since deedplans submitted may well want all that perimeter space. Very happy for other folks to compete to design it, and would welcome it. It's not my thing, personally, but so long as SS gets the love and attention it sorely needs, that's all we really wanted for it. Thus: thread no longer needed.

There always was the idea of simply being able to light a forge with a spell.
  22. 1 point
On that note: I don't think SS really shows off anything that can be done in Wurm, or reflects the style or community of the server, and what little is there is almost completely un-interactable for players both new and old. If the answer to the above suggestion is 'it's complicated and we need more time to consider it', or 'no, sorry' that's fine but we've got an alliance of prem'd PCs here waiting for someone to acknowledge the suggestion so we know whether it is likely to be considered, or whether we should get our teeth into other projects we all have going.

Mowglia - Whos on Epic? As far as I can tell, its you, Lowborn, and.. a few sheep? At least your not lonely.. who else is on Epic? sound off yeah? But yes, Epic DOES sound fun. I should really head over there. But know this, I'm a bit of a Wind-up merchant and enjoy a little drama and inter conflict with a bunch of needling. Its my way of showing love. Probably just the echoes from institutional brainwashing and hazing from my time as one of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children. Not everyone's cup of tea. And the problem.. On epic you can just spawn-whack me over and over once your tired of me.. And that just sounds like fun in and of itself - I'm definitely coming over!! I expect a warm welcome with red carpets rolled out upon my arrival.

I've been playing since 2009, and never really "worked" in Wurm to get silver. I did sell horses for many years, but that market mostly died after Care For was introduced. Now, I just breed for my own little collection. For me, spending half or more of my gaming time trying to scrape together enough currency to pay for premium just isn't fun, and as such, is a waste of my precious downtime. The Wurm "economy" isn't terribly important to me, as I'm not really driven by any accumulation of wealth. I just like to log in, wander around, make things I need in order to do other things, build stuff, tear stuff down, rebuild, dig holes.... All the things my neighbours IRL would be unhappy with me doing in my garden. 😉

Some of these may be possible, I know the permissions system was intended to have a slip able to be created and sold for example. There's a lot of great ideas here, we'd like to introduce lots of these concepts however many of these are currently out of our scope, so don't expect them anytime soon

Nowadays priests can spend 100 favor to summon other players to their location provided they are on the same server (would have to sail over if not) so that aspect is taken care of. I think the problem with people not really dueling is the lack of need for player imput/interaction during the fight. Sure they body parts to aim at and to defend are an interesting concept but they dont have too much impact on the outcome which is going to be decided by players fight skill and body stats like stam and str etc. So a fight between players with same gear is really close FS would be decided by rng: you hit or parry or not.. or gambling: you spend stam to focus and fail the chan you are at a disatvantage but if you manage to raise your focus you are in a better position cr wise but posibly behind on stam. Wetwo said they are working on changing the current fight system and they are going for making it more informative (what you are fighting and what the difficulty of that mobs is compared to your skill) and perhaps more tactical. We will have to wait an see. But yeh the dueling events would be atleast hapening if the player input would matter but atm is just skills and gear that do all the heavy lifting. It could maybe be more visualy pleasing to a crowd if there were to be team fights organised because then we can have like the players decisions on the set-up: how many priests and how many fighters in the 5 man squad and when the fighting begins could be fun to watch them try to focus fire one person in the other team or try to save one of their own.

Good question! Just some stuff about their background maybe and what they do for Wurm. Even just a list of current names would be better than a list of people who quit years ago.

Yes I have many FSBs and they take up most of the room. It leaves little working and living space. It would be nice even just to tidy all the empty ones away. Maybe we could have some of that wonderful flat pack furniture, one hears about! If we could store the FSB's flat and then just pop them open when we need them - now there's a thought.

(note - you might get a better price for at a later date depending on how the steam version affects our heritage populations. this is certainly true of char sales but that's a mythical axe, there might be a wealthy collector still amongst us)

Visible fruits on trees/bushes when they are in season is a great change. (to show it in-game... Maybe one of each trees/bushes that can be harvested in a season? Enchanted trees/bushes never age now, so it's possible to keep them looking the same, forever ) Big rendering updates mostly came out in 2019 as well.

The Evil Blacklight Strikes Again. I hoped we had found a peace. That I could post of beautiful things. I could tell of sunrises and crops. I thought maybe if I let them have a win that the war would end but they took it as weakness. It was early morning I had just logged on. My plan was to harvest cotton for the days hunting. I looked forward to the wonderful meals our village member prepared. It was good. I did not have to eat plain cooked meat. His food gave extra skill and health. My plan was smashed by what I witnessed. For those players faint of hart do not read on for the story that is ahead is sad. For the rest of the day I could only sit with head in hands. I wept for what we had lost and for the souls of those who had to commit such crimes. As I have said. It was a beautiful morning. I was enjoying wonderful food. I thought of my plans for the day. I would harvest cotton and hunt maybe collect what was needed to help the village. I was sitting just outside my house in the mine. The oven was still hot from the day before and the food was the best I had ever had. I reminded myself to thank the cook later that day. After eating I arose. Now I would began. I had not doubt the day would be a perfect day as the weeks had been before it. Crossing the doors to the mine and going outside I saw the cotton fields. They were in bloom. Ready to harvest. There was a ram eating at one of the crops. He looked friendly yet hungry. I was not upset at him for eating crops. He was only hungry and I would do no less than he. I harvested just enough cotton for the days hunting, the rest would wait till later. I was excited to get started. My goal was 100 fs, I was only at 60 but each days hunting would bring me closer. First I wanted to check the deeds upkeep. Each day I wanted to make sure the taxes for the king were in place. Long live the King. So I climbed the steep hill to the walls of the village. After entering I went to the village token and checked. It was good. I knew it would be. I had checked it yesterday and each day before. Something was not right. I could feel it. I stood at the token for a moment trying to understand why I was in such a dark cloud on such a beautiful morning. Sunlight shown around me but it was quiet and inside I felt a dark. I thought myself crazy. Why did I have this darkness within me. It was real. I could feel it pressing against me like a thick fog. I was surrounded by an evil I had never known. Slowly I turned. I was afraid to turn. I thought a monster was standing watching me just feet away. Nothing so easy as that. Then across the yard I saw the gate and the wall. They had been smashed. We no longer had a gate. I could see two catapults outside the village and stone shards littered the inside. This was bad but I could deal with this. I could not deal with the things I would soon discover. I turned back to the token and soon discovered that there was a hole in the main house. It too had been vandalized. Inside the crates and chests had been smashed and looted of our finest crafts. That was ok. It was expected of bandits. I would survive. I would repair walls and continue my search for the villages of the offenders. They struck In the night. They traveled in darkness. They were the Evil Blacklighters. I did not know where they came from or where they had went. They were phantoms. How could I attack a foe that was but shadow and nightmare but one day I would. I would end this. I would find a way. I had not seen evil. Not yet. The morning was fresh, it was young. I was naïve. I thought this was all and I could continue my day as planned. Sadness and horror would soon change all that. After seeing my loss. I thought myself the bigger man. We would rebuild and craft new better items. So I would get a horse and go hunting; forgetting the mornings setback. I went to the horse field. I fell to my knees. I could not look. I could not imagine. For a moment my breathing was hard. I thought I would die. I could not look up again. It was to much. Once we had a beautiful field of horses. Young and mothers, proud fathers. Fine steed with abilities. Now is the time to go to a better post. To read of Christmas impalongs. Everting was quite. In front of me were dozens of horses. Young and old. Fathers and Mothers. None grazed on grass. None frolicked in the open. They were on the ground, motionless: all of them. Not one was left standing. Something evil opened in me that day. I thought to not just rid the map of the BlackLighers but to raid and destroy every village I found. I did not know the village they came from so I would destroy everyone I came to. Every hut. Every deed. One of them would be the one I sought. I did not move for hours. I just sat head in hands; hating. Plotting my revenge.

I like every single one of these suggestions, but especially adding a "flag ship" that allows a player to basically live at sea rather than needing an on land deed area, buildable docks (that a ship can be tied off to, I would presume), and the bartender/food merchant. Would enjoy seeing every one of these suggestions make it into the game though!

Since I've gone and removed the offending bits I've unhidden it, it was my plan to have the forum moderators change it but given that it did upset you I went and did it myself. I agree my wording came across a little strong, which is why it was edited. The feedback is all valid and will go a long way into working on Jackal round 2, we'll be taking some time to address multiple areas raised and do hope the next round to be much more engaging.
  42. 1 point
I like that phrasing. In soviet wurm the party steps down you!
  43. 1 point
The design of it is plain because Budda was stepped down towards the end of the project and between addressing bugs and ensuring the stronghold existed at all there was little time for major polish. It is the zone for the final fight, not really a labyrinth of puzzles. This is the first iteration and as such has areas to improve upon which we've already taken plenty of feedback. If you enjoyed jackal thats great! If you have reasonable ideas about how it can be improved please feel free to do so, but enjoy it for what it is, a first run through of a project that's going to ensure ongoing and engaging content for players, with the ability to really mix up pve styles without impacting existing players who do not wish for it. The negative attitudes and comments make constructive feedback difficult to sift through. While I'm completely aware that you are disappointed in how the first iteration of jackal has missed that certain "something" that you were hoping for, the best course of actions would be to give ideas and discuss what can happen next run, because of the way Jackal is designed changing the mechanics mid run is not possible without causing major issues.

This is just what I was able to glean from the forums. I'm not going to debate whether users agree or disagree with it any longer. As written in the 2019 Financial Report by Game Chest Group, the direction is: "The first acquisition made during the past quarter was by the company Code Club AB and its platform Wurm Online / Unlimited. We have now decided to launch Wurm on steam in early 2020, so much focus is on this right now. Here, among other things, we have recruited a new production manager more experience of this process than before, as well as we have gathered the users' wishes and are now updating several components of the game's design while developing a new website to modernize ourselves before the big release on steam." If it survives it survives, if it dies it dies. At this point, I'm not worrying myself about the details any longer. I'm playing the game as I always have and whatever happens happens. I'm not going to sell my accounts based on "what if" scenarios. I can only hope the game survives and begins to thrive once more. That's all I'm going to say.

it would tho, ignoring diagonal... `straight` is either due North, East, South or West. all that has to be done is a function to turn the vehicle to a cardinal direction then it'd be perfectly straight.

Hi. I happened to have some fun digging under the water using the dredge today. Anyone who have done that trully knows how big of a PITA that is. I wont talk about the volume of the 2 dirts in the dredge right here, or that you cant see what you are doing if you are using a boat as it blocks all the view, wont talk about the hopping in/out the boat to regain stamina if you actually want to see what you doing.. BUT Can we, please, have adjustable dredge at least? I mean, sort of similar as a measuring jug in a way, where we could select the pre-set required depth to like -10 below water, -25, -50, unlimited and where it wont dredge passed the set depth. I mean that probably would not be too hard to code either, as we already have some limits in place, like digging stops at -7, mining stops at -25 under water. So i believe with a little bit or work this could become very possible and an awesome upgrade to terraforming tools that would be a huge, huge advantage in player ecperiences too. Thanks

Make horses able to be ridden by default. Riding bareback without a saddle should slow you down, but can be mitigated by having higher BC. Tie the maximum speed to body control checks and having a saddle. I think that wurm is a bit tough for new players. Perhaps that is part of its appeal, but being able to ride a horse should be able to be done from the start. Here is my suggestion by percent of baseline. 20 BC 50% speed bareback 60% with saddle 21 BC 60% speed bareback 100% with saddle 23 BC 80% speed bareback 25 BC 100% speed bareback Should be fairly easy to implement, less wogic-y, and beneficial to new player retention.
