So March 1st I embarked on a wild journey to bring Wurm into AWS. I had figured it'd take me a few weeks to a month. Yeah, that didn't happen. We have now 14 game servers, three test servers, an artifacts server, a build server, and four websites. That's... well it's more work than I originally thought. We're looking at two ways of rolling things out to the cloud: Manual - This means to manually request resources and set up the server. Automatic - This means infrastructure as code. Once a system configuration is written, it will always be set up the same way every time it is run. One of the pros of automatic is that we can spin up new test and game servers as needed. Primarily useful for test servers! The way I've structured it so far also lends us to the freedom of huddling game servers together on one larger machine to keep costs down. It can be cheaper overall to pay for a beefier instance and put two game servers on it than to pay for two smaller instances for each. One of the cons of this is the time it takes to write everything. Especially when I'm forging new territory here. I mean I've deployed to AWS many times, but each challenge is different. Our infrastructure is vastly different than the last one I helped on. One of the pros of a manual roll-out is that there's no code to write. You put the time in, and thanks to things like ready-made server images, that time is reduced. Once you're done, it's online. A major con though is you'll have to manually duplicate any setup required and more complicated resources are more time-consuming. Recently I've moved the forums and the wiki to AWS, and both of these moves where of the manual type. This fit perfectly though as the resources were simple. The most time spent was transferring data and upgrading the platforms once established on the new servers. So with that out of the way, here's a breakdown of where everything is: Forums - DONE Wurmpedia - DONE WO Website - Not Started WU Website - Not Started Build Server - In development Artifact Server - Not Started Test Servers (3) - In development Live Servers (14) - In development My intention was to finish the build and artifact servers, which will clear up a host for us. I'm going to get those to a working state before jumping back over to the test and live servers at this point. Our outage this weekend really underscored the need to complete the game servers first. I did work with Hetzner to get spare hosts repaired though, so should a drive go down we have the ability to move the server to a working one. I hope this brings folks up to date with the effort. I'm not nearly as far along as I'd hoped to be by now. That's mostly due to a very busy first half of the year with travel and work. While my work will remain at a steady rate after this week, my travel plans are done for the rest of the year. That will open me up for more long-term development on this project. Thanks all, and happy Wurming!

The epic skillgain system removes the need for a result in the 1-40ql range, and simply gives skillgain if you succeed the action. Because of this increased tick rate, skillgain tick size is shrunk to compensate, so even at 1x speed 1x skill tick sizes are smaller than freedom this servr now has a 4x multiplier, means it's the epic skillgain system at 3x speed 4x skill, for comparison epic is 2x timer 4x skill (2x from the system and 2x for being epic in general) So this priorities succeeding actions rather than doing ones around your skill, you want a pickaxe around your skill+10 in ql, and you want actions that succeed as often as possible. TL;DR - Do actions and succeed = gain skill Note- Zenity did post a reply detailing what the epic curve is, but that doesn't apply to this server so I've hidden it to make sure the information is kept on topic.

1 good question is... does player skill reset once the map resets after 6 months?

Since we were told to bring a tent to rifts, and fashion is always paramount (even when you die), please immediately allow tents to be painted similar to bardings. Please drop all other game development stuff and do this right now so we can live and die in style! Thanks EDIT: And wagons. Please add wagons.

To add to Retrograde's comment: Sometimes the fixes require data to be modified as well, which requires a server to be restarted. For example, moving Jackal required all servers to be updated and made aware of the new IP address. It's possible this would've been refreshed, but it's safer to just bring the servers down and back up again. As Retro said though, often a fix for one server or cluster is needed on all. Plus it makes me happy knowing all servers are running the latest code.

This is known. The initial fix was simply to get them to stop murdering players through walls. A more extensive fix is being worked on.

In reality, if everything in Wurm could be painted and customized for more colours and textures, it would be awesome.

Was really glad to see you guys left us GL-Freedom, but our trade chat needs to be seperate. No trade between Jackal and Freedom is possible and we have seperate skills on Jackal so seeing regular trade chat is useless to us out on Jackal. We need our own trade chat out there. Not the highest priority as most us living out there are just working together and getting established at this point. But hopefully you can do that after dealing with the more pressing issues in a week or two.

Many people travel and leave carts/horses out and about when they have to log out to go to work. Please introduce a temporary "camp" to put around our carts or horses, something made of ropes and shafts, which can be placed around our cart or wagon or horse before we log out, and easily rolled up and packed away the next day. This will stop little camps being made all over the server in case a rift mob kills the horses or bison hitched in the cart, or the saddle horse out in the wilderness. This structure can decay fast if left off deed e.g. completely gone within a week. Edit: We could alternatively cut thorn bush branches and make a temp camp that way, which will keep all mobs out but be hollow like guard towers or forges? Point is whatever has to be quick to put up and quick to remove.

I believe it's just old data based on hardware limitations of the time. Sometimes when something's set, it just gets forgotten.

I put one at FM, near the token.

I have built one on the between Freedom Market and Great South Mountain Road. Take the east exit from FM, take right after the HOTS guard tower and follow the road up. Around H17 area, I think.

Individual servers can be taken down and updated, but often it's common code meaning the chances of an issue happening on another server are the same. It's not all servers taken down for local issues, it's usually a case of a crash happening on one server highlighting a bug that could cause other servers to crash. In the instance of this weekend most of the fixes were rift creature based, and thus all servers went down as we added fixes to those too

These Hyenas are so cute - even my horse lost his head... but I wish we could lead and tame them!

Hi all, I have some time while the system updates to post a bit about what's going on. The original plan with Jackal was to roll it out into AWS, but due to time limitations and the growing complexity of the task, I was unable to meet that deadline. As a result I felt the old Independence hardware would be sufficient even with the lag it was causing before. My thinking was that Jackal is a fresh server with little data, so that should mitigate the lag. I was obviously wrong. In the grand scheme of things another piece of hardware was able to be utilized - all it ran was the Wurmpedia's database at the moment, so moving the Wurmpedia to AWS seemed like a good forward step. I started that process earlier, and I'm waiting on some DNS updates before I can finish it. Meanwhile it was Jackal's turn. The move was smooth actually, but due to the host having been set up quite a while ago and simply unused, the system is outdated and the server crashes at the first polling. This is why it seemed up for a moment for some people but crashed soon after. I am in the process of updating the system now to see if this corrects the issues. Should this not correct the issue, I will move Jackal back to the old hardware and work with Rolf on a better solution. I apologize for this and take full ownership of the problem at hand. More updates will be forthcoming as I have them and the time to post them. Update Hardware woes all around. It would seem the hardware I wanted to use is suffering from memory issues. That's why the server kept crashing. Even after a system upgrade, it is dying on initializing variables. The current plan of action is to get the laggy hardware back online so folks can either brave the lag or head back to Freedom while we sort this out. I'm not without a plan to resolve this however, I simply need to discuss with the team and Rolf. Thank you all again for your patience. Update 2 I'm currently working with Hetzner to replace the memory in the hardware I attempted to use today after I was able to run a memory checking tool to provide that's the cause. I was doing this while waiting for the old hardware to finish some routine tasks, which are taking considerably longer than they usually should. I believe the server just went offline to be fixed, and they quoted me 30-40 minutes to do the job. I'll post more once the hardware is back online. Update 3 In an amazing turn of events, Hetzner was able to replace the RAM of the server. I've been running a tester on it and all checks out! We'll be taking all servers down for a hot fix and then Jackal will return with all the other servers right after. This should resolve the lag!

In height editing mode, central number shows height of current corner, while surrounding numbers show slopes relative to that central corner.

This worked for me (Linux). @MrGlyn Thanks so much for posting this - I would still be offline if you had not!

here is exactly why i love wurm the developers themselves will come out and publicly admit fault for something not going well. there are so many more reasons but i wont gush. anyway thank you for letting us know and remember keep calm and wurm on i know u will get it fixed and it will be amazing. although i do wish i could have my toon back on freedom while jackal is down

I still love the wurm staff and everyone behind the scene doing a great deal to get (and keep) things running ❤️ Hugs Aroma.

I fully accept responsibility for not having had the hardware swapped out yet. I feel your tone is harsh, but reasonable due to my failing here.

Thanks. Wonder how that was so off

I'd love to automate this, but we also have a policy of reviewing the map dumps for issues and regenerating them after. Issues such as foul language, slurs, and the like. We pass the locations to the GM team who do the investigation, repair, and reprimand if need be. And trust me, there's almost always someone out there who thinks they're witty enough to pull it off. So we wouldn't be able to do up-to-the-moment map dumps. More frequent would be nice once I'm able to automate the export process, but that'd be a long time off at this point due to higher priority issues.
