So today I returned home from my holiday to expired premium, and I thought to myself "Ether, it's time to regain some empathy towards new players". I had a lovely surprise when I got downstairs, my new housemate (returned from a long absence) had bought a magical chest, so we now had indefinite storage for certain items which is amazing. I proceeded to go outside with my 70-ε quality sickle to tend my garden; and then I took 8 attempts to prune a hedge (I dread to think what it would have been like with a 20QL sickle). Suffice to say, I also noticed my "tree blindness" when I began to check the bushes, needing to double click on each one to get its age. Life with forestry capped at 20 really has some unpleasant features! Luckily, though, picking sprouts and failing only gives a low QL sprout, and my sickle drags up QL a fair bit. So soon, my garden was in good order. Well, sort of. One of my housemates has been breeding unicorns up, and we're getting a little dense in the garden itself, but the odds of me being able to move them are mathematically insignificant, so poor JingerJAS has herself another chore. The herb pots that line my path are now much easier to pick with the new hotkey system, this was previously a horrible chore I avoided, now it is one I think I shall look forward to. Visiting the "cave of death" yielded 4 fresh animal corpses, all of which gave low QL butchered items (not that I mind, save for the fat of course!) A quick repair job on my sickle cost me 0.14QL; a pretty large drop! We often forget just how much a good repair skill actually does for us. It's around about this point I noticed something; I've been playing the game for just under 30 mins, and I've experienced no character growth (my forestry hit 20 years ago after all), and my sense of pride at having weeded my garden faded a bit. This is much less fun than I remember, no wonder new players ne- Ah, but my housemate has logged in, and I shall now proceed to be distracted and tell him all about my adventures as a free player. Because, of course, the real thing that keeps new players around is the community. Time to re-preme!

Been trying for a couple days now to figure out how to express my thoughts on this in something less than a small novelette and without it being just a collection of jumbled thoughts with no coherency. lol. Some of the comments here have been spot on, imo. I can't tell you how many times I've felt similar and thought about just walking away, but I think sometimes the best thing is to not think about quitting per se, which has an element of finality to it, but to just do other things for a while, while still maintaining deeds, etc., and maybe just playing now and then when the mood hits. I also do this with a few different WU servers I play on as well. Each different from each other and each with it's own charms. I think that Wurm generally attracts what you referred to in another thread as free spirits, but of course not all Wurm players are. And I see that type of clash of personalities more often than not on these forums. As for me, I have always preferred to think of myself as a free spirit who doesn't want to be pigeon-holed as one thing, one type of person, etc. (Sounds great to me but others just see that as a negative.) There is so much variety and diversity in the world that to limit myself, I feel, would make life unbearable. But society tells us we are supposed to "find" ourselves, define ourselves, find our pigeon-hole and say "this is who and what I am." This is seen as normal and desirable, and something we should all strive for. Even when we don't hear that in words, we absorb it through osmosis via TV, social media, song lyrics, etc., etc., ad nauseum. I've never been a joiner, or wanting to identify with any group, or to say I'm this or I'm that. But I've also come to the conclusion that in general the herd mentality is the norm. So-called "normal" people want to find & define themselves and "belong" somewhere. And I've found that what feels comfortable and normal for me is seen as odd-ball more often than not by the majority of people I meet. They're always trying to figure me out and discover what pigeon-hole I fit into. Good luck with that, lol. In reality I have no pigeon hole. Anyway, starting to ramble here so back on subject. lol. From what I've seen I think you are a "free spirit" as well and maybe just haven't become completely comfortable with it yet. Wurm has fewer people right now than we've seen at other times, this limits the pool of potential like-minded people. And those who are also free spirits & like-minded are generally going to be off doing their own thing, flitting about and enjoying life. lol. So I would say just step back now & then and smell the roses somewhere else for a while without burning any proverbial bridges. Try a WU server or 3, or go on a youtube binge for a while. It can be so refreshing.

On Elevation, hate level 7 is changed into a lockpicking bonus instead of a damage increase. In the process, devs appeared to have changed the increased damage factor from 1.5x to 0.0x instead of 1.0x Meaning that, in effect, activating the lock picking bonus makes you COMPLETELY unable to do anything in melee combat. I have not tested ranged combat. So basically, when you're in the middle of PvP and trying to activate hate level 9, you're clicking only a few pixels away from a 'certain death' button. How to reproduce: Give yourself Hate level 7 on Elevation and some fancy weapon, then try to attack a young hen. Watch yourself fail. This results in some pretty hilarious combat logs, the following happened with an 80+ql enchanted metal spear, >70FS and >70 spear skill

So I got to thinking, there are a lot of minor, everyday annoyance in wurm. My current pet peeve is sudden withering (from very old sprouting to withered overnight), it's a bugger. I dread this happening to my trellises since I can't simply remake them! The thing is, it's one of many tiny annoyances in wurm every day. Removing them would remove a lot of the challenge from the game, but giving an alternative fix might be something nice. And this is where unicorn horn wands come in. Take one unicorn horn (weight of 1.5), have a jewellery smith attach a gem (product QL capped by gem QL, weight = 2), then have a priest cast a spell on the wand (or use the appropriate spell rune on a wand) to give it an effect. ANYONE can use a wand and wands vanish once their QL drops below 0. Unicorn Horn Wand + Wild Growth = Wand of Rejuvenation (use on a withered tree/bush/trellis to turn it back into a very old tree at the cost of 20 favour and 5 wand QL) A couple more examples: Unicorn Horn Wand + Heal = Wand of Curing (use on any diseased player or animal to remove disease at the cost of 30 favour and 10 wand QL) Unicorn Horn Wand + Mend = Pottery Sealing Wand (use on any damaged pottery item to remove 20 damage at the cost of 20 favour and 5 wand QL) Unicorn Horn Wand + Strongwall = Wand of Stable Footing (use on any unreinforced mine floor tile to reinforce it (default reinforced floor texture) at the cost of 30 favour and 20 wand QL) Optional Extra: Give priests a damage reduction on wands [Damage =Base Damage*(1-(channeling/200))] Edit: Changed borked formula

Just a thought: Most things use tools to create or imp, which in turn can be used to gain greater skill or make the action faster (CoC, WOA, runes, imbues, imping the tool), however, a few things use a "hand" or just an action, like pottery, picking herbs/woads, botanizing, and ircc foraging. Perhaps equipping a specific glove when doing these, which can then give the same advantages as other tools, could help out in terms of skillgain/speed of the action. My suggestion would be to bring in such a glove to use in these circumstances. This is a non compulsory item, purely there for those to use when they want to do botanizing for hours or make pottery items for hours.

I like this idea. +1 Please make it a cloth item (Artisan's Glove?) so that the cloth tailoring skill gets another utility item to craft.

It might be worthwhile to actually articulate why it wont be changed or removed instead of just saying so. If you're adamant on keeping this in the game, explain why. Give us the hypothetical scenario where this is beneficial to keep the way it is. This is one of the very few goals in the game where the player doesn't actually have all the tools by which to accomplish it themselves. Goal to create some nails? I can use my pickaxe, find a vein, smelt the ore and craft the nails. Done. Goal to get to 70 prayer? It's going to be a long and boring road, but after being chained to an altar for long enough, it can be done. Goal to sacrifice a champion creature? It may take a while to find one, but there's plenty of them out there. I can kill it myself, bring it back to the altar, and get the rewards. Goal to hold 100 sermons? I can either make alts to hold the sermons to myself, or work with village mates and do a sermon rotation at the benefit of everyone involved. Now you look at the global spell goal. Lets say I make 10 alts just to pray and get the global spell charged. At a timer of 30 seconds and each prayer taking 30 seconds, this would require 3,000,000 (3 million) seconds of prayers to achieve spread across 10 alts (300,000 seconds each). That's 5,000 minutes praying total for each alt, roughly 83.3 hours or 3.5 days of consistent prayer. Again, this is me putting 10 alts and 3.5 days of pure time into getting this done. Let's say I spend a week doing this, 12 hours a day, on 10 alts online at all times. Then I go to sleep on the 6th or 7th day, and wake up the next morning to find that someone else had charged the rest of the spell and done the cast. The whole process gets reset to zero and everything I just did to get to my own goal is now gone. This is toxic and will simply turn players in the community against each other. I'll go ahead and just name Yellowfinger. How do people feel about him in general? Are you okay with encouraging that type of interaction? Rites were changed to the 24 hour window to avoid situations where stealing a cast would be frowned upon. However, as soon as that was done, this goal entered the fray and continued the trend of players frowning upon players casting global spells. Individual players have no control over this goal. If someone doesn't have an army of alts, they have even less control over this goal. I struggle to even call this a goal. As others have stated, it's a lottery. It's not a goal, it's a wash.

If they have no control panel for GM power, then you'll need to edit the db manually. To do this download and install: https://sqlitebrowser.org/ DB Browser for SQLite Download the players.db from your server via FTP. Open the players.db file in SQLite browser Go to Browse Data, select the Players table You can type in the name of the name of the person or just search through until you find the person's name. Scroll on over to the right and there will be a POWER column. Just change 0 to the appropriate power level. Arch is 4, Admin is 5 Click Write Changes Save. Exit. Upload players.db back to the server via FTP. The player is now an admin and you can type #give 176 on a Power 5 account (Admin) As an Admin you will have the ability to create new ebony wands via the create menu or you can just make as many as you need to trade to your other GMs. Lastly, backup all your data and migrate to Pingperfect or literally any other service that has a control panel specifically for Wurm unless you go dedicated once your term is over, because what's the point of all this hassle when you can literally just push a button on Pingperfect and all this happens for you? For pretty much the same price, with more access, quick customer service ticket response times, and almost never a "Idk how to help you" response. Cheers!

Retrograde please stop adding to the fire with points that are not applicable to the problem presented to you or else your pee pee will be gone before you realize it. There is nothing more I feel I can add that Gwyn and Angelklaine have already added. Give us a goal people can work very hard towards that can't be stolen underneath our feet.
