Blocks wee castle - Block Greetings Wurmians! I'm back (yep, not rid of me!) after a short break to bring you all the latest news of what I and the dev team have been up to, so let's get into it! Mysteries afoot Some recent rumours have been spreading about strange creatures being sighted, to investigate we sent intrepid explorer (this ain't his first day at kindergarten), Jack A. Lormere of the prestigious Lormere family on from Xanadu to investigate these claims. We received one message back, which we've been able to transcode into this link: https://vocaroo.com/i/s14Vyj5cinbH Any attempts to contact Jack have since gone silent... But we're left with many questions, what was that sound, and what became of Jack A. Lormere? Merchandise (show off your wurm!) Ever want your own wurm online shower curtain? No, well now you might! We've teamed up with Redbubble and have now launched our official merchandise via their print on demand site. This means you can order posters of the ingame maps, wurm logo merchandise, an soon to be more! If you have ideas for what you'd like to see let us know, and we'll try make it happen! Check out the merchandise here: https://www.redbubble.com/people/WurmOnline?asc=u Stream stuff We've been trialing our new chillstreams with the focus being on the soundtrack and ambiance of Wurm. It's been a pretty cool thing to set up and check out, with a lot more focus on the actions and sounds of Wurm, we'll be running these on Tuesdays and Thursdays as we tweak it, so tune in and check it out! Tomorrows will be smithing in the mine, I've got my gear all ready, my mismatched smith all setup, and will be starting that from 12AM UTC! You can also catch our old streams on YouTube! We have an official YouTube channel setup and it'd be great to hit the 100 subscribers to it to give us a custom emote. We'll be uploading all Twitch streams to it as well as some sneak peeks and more soon, so check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9pnMrLxEeDELcH1gHctgjw With hitting affiliate, we're also working on official emotes for Wurm, including Rolf face, a question mark bag, and the ever valuable GoldenRolf too! Passing of Eir It was some sad news to announce with the passing of Eir/Qualia, a really long term member of the community who unfortunately passed away from her battle with cancer. It's been amazing to see everyone come together to share their experiences and interactions with her, including a sighting of Rolf! See? he's totally not locked in our basement... That's it from us this week, as we're packing our tents and our saddlebags and going off hunting after Jack, fingers crossed we can retrieve some evidence of his adventures... Until then though, keep on Wurming! Retrograde & the Wurm team

Summary of the exchange so far, as I see it (with a touch of levity): 1. Concerned Players: [Thread after thread, page after page of evidence and explanation showing the current goal operates like a taxpayer-funded lottery, with the general player base as the taxpayers and the rite participants as the jackpot winners.] 2. Concerned Players: We don't want to be taxed and have our work redistributed at random. We don't want a lottery. We don't like gambling. We want an honest challenge that takes teamwork to overcome and rewards the team that overcame it. 3. Retrograde: Well, the lottery is won by only a few players and takes a team of taxpayers to fund; therefore, it is challenging and rewards teamwork. 4. Concerned Players: ? Umm... But that's not what words mean. You haven't actually addressed Point 2 at all. 5. Retrograde: All right, all right. So the problem is that not enough people have won the lottery yet to keep you rabble quiet. So we'll feed the lottery jackpot with new taxes. More taxes, more lotto draws, more winners! Everybody's happy! 6. Concerned Players: *Sigh* No, because the nature of a lottery means some people may still never win, regardless of the number of draws or how much they are taxed. Again, we don't want to gamble for our own collective work. We want a fair reward for a fair challenge that requires a group effort. 7. Retrograde: Ah, but you see, the lottery is a fair challenge because not everyone wins. And it is a group effort, because the entire player base is being taxed to fund it ... ... And on and on it goes. Maybe we can break out of this loop?

Non priests can already help and the channeling is already a factor increasing with links. The crux of the issue is having to be in exactly the right place at the precise right moment no matter how much effort you put in.

Can you guys see who is working to fill the pool vs who is casting it though? Can you guys see who is casting multiple times with different alts? You seem to think people are mad because someone is sitting there intentionally stealing the casts why because. No, the problem is a group who needs it works for it and then another group steals it without putting the effort. Or maybe 2 groups or more put in the effort but only 1 benefits. The goal does not reward effort. It rewards who can be online longer/who can be more lucky/who can have less of a life. Just like the rifts goal. This seems to be something the staff seems to be really fond of and your player base is telling you we hate it. Stop it!

No one has any problem with it being difficult. At present, it is not difficult. In fact, it is trivial. It depends entirely on luck for all but the tiniest minority who have taken it upon themselves, either alone or in small groups, to charge deity favour pools. I would be happy to re-explain or link content if you missed these points. Most of us want an honestly difficult and fair challenge that does not penalize pro-community fair play. A proper fix would address this non-relationship between effort and goal completion. This could mean offering players some protection on their work charging the deity favour pool, or fairly rewarding that work, or changing how deity favour works altogether. Here are a few such suggestions that have already been made: Mission favour contributions, a 90 channeling req't, and cooldowns do not mend this massive rupture between effort and reward and some of these might actually cause other issues.
  8. 4 points
Oh I thought you were trolling. I think the idea here is to make the goal more fair not make it easier or in your case harder. Making it require 90 channeling would be akin to having the non priest one suddenly have grind ws to 90 and it does not, it has imp a weap to 50ql. There are many skills much easier that you can take to 99. I don't think the request for a fairer system that doesn't have people fighting to be faster at being underhanded, or online at an unknown right time is unreasonable, I do think your idea is unreasonable.

It went something along the lines of "the reward is powerful enough to justify the incredibly tough requirements." In one respect, I agree that the reward for completing the journal tier is outrageously strong, and the requirements should be tough. I think most people here also agree with that sentiment. The problem arises when the actual completion isn't tough, but instead a combination of luck and reliance on others not to ###### you over. It creates a competitive and toxic dynamic between players who have the same goal. I would wholeheartedly agree with changing the goal from casting the spell directly to obtaining the reward from a rite X amount of times. For what it's worth, the argument that it would be too hard to change is inaccurate. It would be a few lines change to switch the goal over to some new requirement. The technical challenge comes from making sure existing players who completed the goal don't lose that journal tier when the requirement changes. This would require a database edit or something to flag a player who has one achievement to automatically obtain another.

I seriously cannot believe you are still on this train of thought after it has been explained to you so many times. It seems you think people are asking for it to be easier. Thats -not- it. Lets see if perhaps I can explain it to you in a manner you can understand. Imagine you imping 500 swords to 95 to sell to a kingdom. Say someone will pay you 400 silver for the entire order. You finish imping all of them after a whole month of working on it non stop. Next day you wake up, and they are all gone. Turns out some random guy took your swords and sold them to your customer. Now that guy has 400s, and you spent a whole month imping for nothing, because you were 100ws and got not even skill. How would that feel? Replace you with every priest out there that had prayed for weeks on end to get the pool filled. Replace the swords for all the prayers they had to do non stop. Replace the 400 silver with Benediction. Replace the guy that stole the swords with the priest and his alts that sniped the cast. Maybe now you can understand what people feel.

is there some reasoning behind ignoring every single comment about how the way it works forces you to N O T work with the community and instead wanting to make it into something more outrageous and even less community oriented because all the 90 channeling priests will be on cooldown and everyone that wasn't lucky enough to get to link and have it completed with absolutely zero effort can be left wondering why they try
  14. 3 points
So tweak it as said? make it 40%, 60%, hell make it so that if you haven't won the timing lottery by the time you hit 100k prayers and could have charged it entirely on your own without alts you complete it. Leave the rite for a lucky free pass since you think that its hard, its actually not hard to steal it, the problem that you don't seem to understand is the difference between something that is hard and something that you can not time to be around for ever. If it helps you decide at all, I don't need this on any of my main toons.
  15. 3 points
I dont know it seems pretty trivial to check an altar a few times a day to see someone else charged the spell and you throw 5s on your priest alts to link and get your cast done. It's also pretty trivial if your 90 channeling friend lets you and other friends link and dont worry about a 6 month cooldown because screw everyone else anyway I also don't know why there's still confusion between difficulty and wanting to actually benefit from your work at the existing difficulty because others can steal your work and that's what all of this has been about Just to be super clear, fairness =/= easy. Wanting to benefit from your hard work and not have it stolen because that's what the game encourages =/= easy

"the issue is that the mechanics for a goal that is forced as a community project actively prevents community effort and only drives wedges between everyone and here are many suggestions in many threads that could help bring back people working together and some that even allow solo players to solo play" "ok but what if it required 90 channeling instead"
  17. 3 points
Id rather see it change to something like 'contribute to 20% of the rite pool' or something similar, you could argue that its just a different name for getting 70 prayer but its no different to the 100 gems you get from getting to 70 prayer, or the sac 10k items and spend 100k favor being pretty much the same, they are all interconnected anyway and then they will all rely on your actual effort to the cause and not pure luck in timing irrespective of that effort.

Hello everyone. I was doing a bit of baking and beverage making and thought of some ideas. Sweet Potatoes Making this brightly colored, starchy tuber would be easy. Sugar + Potato = Sweet Potato Biscotti Biscotti are long, crunchy, and dry cookies that are usually dipped in beverages such as coffee or a dessert wine. They get their texture from being baked twice. Any cookie + knife = cookie pieces. Place the cookies pieces back on a baking tray and bake again in an oven = biscotti. Limoncello Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur that is made from steeping the zest of lemons with a spirit, such as grappa or vodka. It is then mixed with a simple syrup. Lemon + vodka + sugar + water + saucepan or cauldron = limoncello

Retro. Please make the goal something that *Can* be 100% achieved with sufficient effort. Every other goal meets this standard. This is the only one that does not. Having 92 Channeling be the goal by itself is ok. Making it hard and time consuming is ok. Requiring fantastic luck and the goodwill of a population of randoms, who have no incentive to cooperate is not.

*nepotism. See the last RotS cast on Xan for reference. It's transparent on its subforum, it even had its own thread because the thing is so rare. Got nothing further to add without sounding like a broken record. But please do add the missions charging favor. One of my gripes with the current system is how dull the charging process itself is - hence my suggestion that was even linked above. I know a rework of that kind is not realistic (but only complaining all day isn't going to get us anywhere so I might aswell spitball something), but adding new ways of charging the deity pool in a meaningful way that isn't praying 24/7 would also alleviate a lot of the frustration, because it happens more as a side effect of normal gameplay rather than a mind numbing, concentrated effort to get the show running. Further ideas for that could be: -A fraction of favor gained from sacrificing items and animals could also go to the pool, with a daily cap per priest if needed. -Successful enchants tighten the gods grip on the world or something and grant favor. -There are actions certain gods do not like. But what if, one the other hand, there were actions they DO like and even followers can perform to contribute other than getting sore knees or ears. Anything to make the charging more pleasant and frequent as people go about their ways rather than being stuck to an altar. It would also foster the notion that it was a community effort and therefore open to cast for anyone. Doesn't address the systematic issues but it may move the mentality more towards one you describe.

Figure out what direct behavior this goal is meant to encourage/reward and design accordingly--just standard goal setting stuff. As it stands, to complete the goal you need to either have excellent contacts, be very lucky, be prepared to be on-line a lot or have a lot of patience to wait it out till get lucky. Was this the design intent? I can confirm this isn't a hard goal at all under certain circumstances. I had the right contacts and got lucky to be online at just the right time. Having said that, I still don't have the tier complete since it literally isn't all that important to me--I'll get there eventually. This probably explains why I'm kind of ok with the current system since I literally don't really care when I get there. Wurm is a life goal for me. I can accept I'm probably not the player to design to though.

What about priests who dont have 90 channeling? Are they forced out of the rewards just because they dont have the necesary channeling? That doesnt solve the problem, that just adds another requirement to the journal entry (90 channeling) that further alienate those who are currently suffering from the issue. There are good suggestions here. Use them.

Maybe. My impression is that that guy is crazy for getting his name at the line "<name> casts Rite of Spring" I may be wrong here, I am quite new in that stuff, and my priest never came even close to casting a global spell, and is not premed right now. I don't know the benefits of repeatedly casting a global spell. But what are the advantages of casting that spell again and again, disrupting events, pissing off lots of players? Looks like pathological vanity or other mental issue to me. .

Here is my first attempt at creating a map (4096x4096). Would like any constructive criticism anyone might have. Would like to get better at making these. I did go a bit tree heavy but the concept for this map is a new unclaimed land. Have a small spawn village (540, 320) area. Trying to get more of a survival server going. Cold winters, possible getting sick from none well water. Delivery routes for money. Missions: Good idea, speed things up. It's a game, not a long-term multiple PhD life goal. 3-6 month cooldown: Added bonus if you can find a way for us to find the douchier ninjaers' screams. Good idea for sure. The idea is for hundreds of people to want to join and stay in the game because there's a hope of experiencing endgame within realistic time frames, thus improving the chances of the game having a healthy population in the 4 digits, creating different levels of markets and more community events in the long run.... . Not trying to troll here, just being direct: What's with you CCAB staff and coming up with ways to alienate as many people as possible except a handful of veterans and a few resold account holders? Face it, the 1%ers don't have the best interests of the game in mind. Think of the other 99%. Try and have an "elite" 20-30% of the population, that way the other 70% has something to realistically look forward to instead of setting the goals further and further away from them. If the current 1%ers do their usual shriek and whine, call a whambulance and carry on with making the game fun, not a chore to please a monarchy.

Hallo. Im posting this in bug section as i think the rift is bugged or either not working as it should be. So yesterday me and couple friends finally went across the map, where the rift beam was in Desertion to check it out ant hopefully do some journal updates (killing rift creatures, creating a rune etc). Upon arival in the rift area, the area was fully wild - grass grown, trees overaged etc. so i thought the rift was open a long time and the nature took it back (rift spawning turns all area tiles into dirt and removes trees? ) more importantly, there were NO rift mobs in the area! Not even one. Upon inspecting rift altar it said the rift was currently on wave 1 with 20 rift hearts needed to sacrifice to progress to next wave. So if it is not bugged in any way and working as intended, excuse me, but mind if i asked how the hell are we supposed to butcher those 20 hearts from the rift mobs if there are NO rift mobs present? I also stayed around the area most of the day, ant they do not spawn. Thank you. P.S. alternative way to progress the wave is sacrificing 1kg of source salt. this trully made me laugh as when was the last time a small group of ppl were lucky to harvest over 33 source salts? (1 source salt is 0.03kg if im not mistaken)

I am trying to refrain from discussing fixes here (perhaps a futile goal), but since as far as I know there's no dedicated suggestion thread with this idea, I'll reply to it here: Such a change might make sense for Holy Crop and Rite of Spring but would have little to no impact on the problem for Ritual of the Sun (8 total casts on Freedom in 4.5 years) and Rite of Death (3 times in 4 years). X would have to be a very small number or vary by deity to account for the huge differences in rite cast frequencies.

I had a blast hosting the one at my deed on exo, was amazing fun seeing all the efforts of my alliance come together and go so well. Plus from a personal perspective i really enjoyed another excuse to show off my deed. I hadn't attended an impalong since the days of MRH and JKH until hosting one myself so it was a hell of a learning experience. I wanted to make it a yearly event but i've just not had the time to arrange another been so busy irl. Someday maybe...

Wurm has always been a pure sandbox, and Impalongs have always been the pinnacle of player-generated creations. The most recent one at Friendship Bay that @VirusMDhosted was particularly memorable for me for several reasons. 1) GMs popping in to create a ruckus in the arena with absurd mobs. Every evening felt like what I'd always imagined an Enkounter might be like. 2) The entirely ridiculous and silly fish slap fights that @Goldfinch officiated. 3) Inventing for the first time the insanity that was Human Lawn Darts. 4) Getting a chance to steal the heart of @Amathand return it to Meerhaven for experimentation Every Impalong is a chance to make new friends, contribute to a larger group effort, and leave our deeds to see the wider world for a bit. They require an immense amount of preparation and planning and I am grateful for each and every one of them.

You are just saying this because we recently raided/drained most of your deeds, and you're scared about being wiped off the map, so now working with TC to bash your own towers and convert some frontline deeds for protection of Sheer Panda. There's nothing wrong with that per se, but I don't think this suggested change should be implemented because the intention is not to help the overall PVP community, but rather to more easily protect your kingdom from WU without conceding deeds or land owned to TC. It's purely selfish.
