I'm a new player (about 3 weeks or so) and, quite frankly, I didn't like the game at first. For that matter, I'm still not sure whether I like it or not. Click and wait 10-20s, repeat, repeat, repeat. Can't even queue things up because the loss of stamina makes the 2nd and 3rd attempts take 2-3x as long. Then, the first time I left the training area, I was killed by a Hell Hound while still in town. I didn't know the name of the starter town and ended up resurrecting in The Howl. I went online to figure out where I was and where my corpse was. I died on the way but had nothing left to lose and resurrected in HL. The Hell Hound was camping my body so I logged off in disgust and didn't plan to play again. However, there were some things I did like (more or less in order): (1) runs natively in Linux, (2) skills increase with use, (3) can make progress even if you only have a few minutes to play, (4) persistent accomplishments, and (5) no hyperinflation. So I decided to give it another chance. I suppose advertising will help some, but if the initial experience is not fun, people aren't going to stay. It seems like the attitude here is to make the initial experience as difficult as possible so those who stay won't complain about the grind later on. Remember the old saying about first impressions. My (1) above is the main reason I decided to try again but that will apply to very few people. My suggestions for improving that initial experience would be (again, more or less in order): (1) Nothing aggressive should spawn or visit a starter town that a new character cannot kill. However, there should be some rats, chickens, or something that they can kill. I like the Elder Scrolls games where there are guards patrolling the main highways and towns are completely safe--enter the wilderness at your own risk. I like the old Asheron's Call model where spawns got progressively harder as you moved away from town. I still haven't found anything other than cows and chickens that I can kill on the first attempt and often run into instant death spawns while looking for cows or chickens. (2) I think the initial 24 hr skill bonus should either reduce time taken as well or negate much of the stamina penalty. This is still the main thing I don't like about the game--that queuing something 3 times takes many times longer than doing the task 3 times waiting for stamina to return. An option to automatically rest until stamina has recovered between attempts would be enough to make me like this game much more. (3) I don't know what the solution is, but there needs to be some way for lower skilled players to make money. I have yet to find a vendor that will buy anything I can make. Selling to a token is ridiculously time consuming. There's already a per hour limit, why not let me sell it all at once? Fear of abuse? Anti-macroing? I understand. Then make the time spent and/or amount limit inversely related to time online (Edit: time spent directly related, IOW, if you're online for a long time, it takes longer to sell. I probably need to think about the amount limit but the idea was if a person was online for a very long time, the limit should be more restrictive.). If I only have a few minutes to play, I don't want to spend it on 3+s per iron at a token. That's my 2c worth from a total newbie's perspective. As for some of the other suggestions, I have wondered if there could be more than just f2p and premium. I do think that the game is too expensive for a niche game. I like the DDO model with 3 levels, f2p, Premium, and VIP. Their VIP is more or less equivalent to Wurm's Premium. Their Premium kicks in if you spend any real money on the game at all. So, even something as simple as--if you buy anything at the store, the 20 skill limit is removed--might help. Or, bump the limit up by 10 for every purchase?

    1. Advertising. 2. Updated interface 3. Some sort of end game that isn't PVP 4. A community event that isn't RIFTS. The timing nearly always sucks and it's really hard to coordinate people there. Replace it with an instanced event, initiated when a group of X get together and do a ritual after gathering specific items together, and give it a cooldown for those who participated. So, group one made of 10 players finishes it Monday and has to wait until the following Monday or whatever but group 2 is able to put 10 players together and perform the ritual on Tuesday, then they have a cooldown... and so on. 5. Organize more community events that emphasize the cooperation of players to complete a task, not some obscure event somewhere in the forums based on a secret post that happened at some point. 6. Create better item sinks. We have an overabundance of stuff with no market because it sits in warehouses with little use.

chaos map interms of new suggested hota mechanics in play atm parallel to traditional hota is about as much fun as it was to do hota on current elevation map ... boring vast nothingness giving the same psychological inspiration. I'd like to see chaos kept as a legacy server to hunt and archeology on with all being a no build area and perhaps a 10c toll to enter to support it's space, and make a new pvp map for freedom cluster the size of old elevation. As to epic cluster, if not scrapping it in entirety we really really need a new map for the current map is truly banal leaving little inspiration to race across a vast surface of mean +5,-5slope change. No choke points, no challenging terrain to surmount, nor areas for fun hidey holes and cuckery. The best part of old hota chaos was the death pit and the minute prospect someone may be there for you when the terrain puts you at odds with stamina and speed.

Wurm is never going to be a mainstream MMO, and will never appeal to the majority. That is just its nature. I see a few suggestions that seem to be wanting to change it to be more WoW, with instanced events etc. There are also some mentions about its grindy nature and rng being unappealing to the general population. Wurm caters to a niche market. It has its strengths, and it dominates in these fields. We should focus on building and expanding these aspects, which will in turn enrich the Wurm experience. A good example of what we did right is the cooking update. It opened up a whole new aspect to the Wurm life - folks who used to eat simple meals or even raw foraged veg and meat now cook or buy elaborately cooked food, to get better nutrition and also affinities. The colour dye update is another interesting update which adds creativity and fun to Wurm. Now armour is not only functional, but can also be a fashion statement. There are many things in the Wurm mythos/world system that are just ripe to be expanded upon. One example is alchemy, enabling us to make various potions (not just from unique blood), poisons, salves etc. Imagine the cooking update but for alchemy. Another example is arrows, making the metal properties apply to them. These are just a couple of suggestions, and I'm sure the community can think up a long list. Instead of trying to overhaul Wurm and turn in into a WoW/other-more-popular-mainstream-MMO clone, we need to stay unique and build on what we already have. With the correct advertising strategy, we will get new players. Not all will stay on, but the ones who see, realise and appreciate Wurm for what it is will do so.

I find a lot of new players asking how to get to certain other servers after awhile. Add teleport gates at each starter town that lets you go to any starter town . I don't think it would diminish the experience of them looking around in any form , but make them look around more , travel more . Wurm can no longer rely on terraforming only and RMT , there is something missing at it's core . Rifts were a good start , just need more like that , not sure if it would be possible to have a large underground area as a dungeon with above ground parts also.!! Wen I started Wurm I figured it was a start to Ultima Online 2 mmo version , a remake at first , I only wish it was ... Maybe Devs need take a look at older games see what keeps them going . Any and most mmo's have that feature to explore scary places , I don't find that in Wurm .

This is just as helpful as "don't break stuff". We test all the changes, and none go live unless it works fine on test for a period of time. It's just that certain issues tend to come out only on live, most of which were unlikely or impossible to appear on test, but at least we're quick at fixing them.

Oceania Terraces At Fairview - Lyhrinae Greetings Wurmians! We touch base this week to share with you what's being worked on and where we're at with things. So take a break from binge watching whatever is on Netflix and jump into it with us. But first.. Patch Notes Shine bright like a diamond With all these fancy normal and specular maps, one question has gone unanswered... What about player armour? Well, the Saroman and Samool dream team (The S&S for brevity) have been hard at work, and are pleased to showcase, shiny armour!!! https://i.imgur.com/PrELaql.gifv Not only that, because these guys don't do things by halves, they've gone and added the ability for rarity to show too! When these guys get together, nothing can stop them (bar performance impacts, and the odd ripply naked man). Expect this to go live in the coming weeks. Crusader PMK gear Well the votes are in, and my favourite one won! (I swear I had nothing to do with it, I just have good taste) We'll be doing a few tweaks then get them in-game for you all to continue to show off your cool PMK stuff. Movement and desync devblog In the patch notes during this fortnight a little single bugfix was posted "fixed a number of movement issues" While it looks small, Budda took the time to jump into just how big this "simple" fix actually was and what it means. Check out all the details here: WU Beta The WU beta is ongoing, with a small patch released last week. We'll likely be including one more update before it all goes live, so hang onto your hats, that's gonna be huge! It appears to be one of, if not our biggest update we've done code wise! Community Content Forum member Gawain has started vlogging his life in Wurm! He shares his adventures via YouTube video, and updates a forum thread here: That's it from us this week, by next news the WU beta should have gone live, and we'll no doubt have more to share with you about what we've been working on. Until then though, keep on Wurming! Retrograde & the Wurm team.

Whatever happened to testing the patches before they go live? It seems like every patch these days is broken, today's being no exception. Why are you in such a rush? Slow down and test your patches. 1. Design patch 2. Code patch 3. Run exact copy of patch on a test server and test internally for a week. Test server should be an updated and exact copy of a live server/s. 4. Open test server to public and allow players to break the patch for a week. 5. Tweak patch and re-release on test server until no more bad things happen (as long as it takes). 6. Release patch to live servers, confident the bugs should have been found and corrected. 7. No longer have to read all the complaints about the fact you don't test anything ever. Avoid knee-jerk server restarts. *Pvp changes should undergo much more rigorous testing.

I was also caught out by one of these retroactive goal completions. The implementation of this really was short-sighted. It could have been predicted how auto-completing these goals might wreck the efforts of players who had been carefully working towards the completion of the affected tiers. My problem was less severe than Finn's and I've been able to work around it in the meantime. But any other players caught out by this deserve, at minimum, an apology, not the cold shoulder. Unannounced changes to game mechanics that wreck players' efforts should be rectified asap as they undermine trust in the game itself. Lose that trust completely, and the will to play will soon follow.

@MataleaoI agree cooking overhaul was great but was also great imbalanced fail that lost sense as soon as people discovered they could just make ludicrous pizzas with 10+h timers for every affinity easily calculated and no one ever bothered with cooking anything else beside maybe few roleplaying enthusiastic peeps...Loot recepie lost any sense, as well as most of beverages. Also agree that similar overhaul for alchemy would be great, and even better with new glassmaking skill, but needs to be done smarter... As for instances nobody is looking for new wow. Instances just have huge benefits over hardcore openworld play in terms of avialability if you have somewhat normal life with work family etc and can play only few hours a day at specific time you don't need to feel left out and adjust your life to wurm. Wurm should always adjust to your life. That's the main point for me that people don't want to invest in playing... Changes with 24h window on rites were changes in right direction regarding that..

I'm sorry but I hope none of that comes true. Tbh if anyone is able to efficiently use 5 toons at the same time without macroing, let them. Wurm is a free market, always has been. That means there is no "standard" price is for bricks or any other item. Just like IRL, when the supply is higher than the demand, sellers drop their prices because they want you to buy from them rather than their competitors. And new players get a referral, that can get them a small deed and a few months of upkeep. I've never been on a unique hunt. I don't think it would be fair for me to get any of the loot just for being logged in at the right time. It could be based on participation like rifts though. Just no.

While I do not categorically rule out the idea of instanced events, I am unsure about the effort and the influence on balance and general gameplay. In other words: this must be researched and planned carefully if at all. But please: do not touch rifts. I found and still find them a good and pleasant way to meet at least parts of the community on different servers, learn new parts of the world of Freedom Isles, and new techniques of sailing to and from the different servers, and develop combat experience. The rotating timelines are convenient/inconvenient to every timezone for some time, and allow or deny attending to normal wurmians (except the alarm clock setting crazies who may always come, sometimes me included). While maybe not ideal I fail to see better schemes. As expressed earlier, I experienced the newcomer reception to be quite wanting at the time I (re-)entered Wurm in 2017. Part of the deficits may have been addressed by the foundation of Haven's Landing, which should be further evaluated and, where necessary, improved. Personally I am very skeptical to any demands of "modern" features. I experienced how short lived fashions in IT, even more in gaming, may be. So the "modern", be it UI, be it web site, be it anything else, may turn "dated" even before it is fully implemented and stabilized. I do not see that the UI is that bad. I have the alternatives of right click drop-downs and windows for crafting, cooking etc. which I both appreciate, and mouse clicks, or sometimes keybinds and text input to react on. I don't know which new fashion is considered "modern" right now. But here again, I would speak out against any brute replacing.

Please allow us to create cloth bardings with kingdom textures. They would need to be a created item rather than rely on the horse to have a kingdom as they're not usually tamed or branded (or some fancy code to set the barding to the equipper's kingdom). Currently, it's difficult to spot your kingdoms horses in a skirmish, so this would hopefully make it easier. Also, remove the speed penalty for wearing them. The protection bonus is negligible, so I don't care if it stays or is removed along with the speed penalty removal. Could potentially allow it to be worn over other horse armour..... Pic for inspiration: Pls add.

I guess you're addressing the OP, but for what it's worth: no, not in my case. I did not perform the actions required for the goal at any time after the journal roll-out. The conditions explicitly specified by the goal were not met. No one gave me any kind of response when I brought it up, much less anything resembling a 'ruling', which I would welcome very much. Personally, it's the lack of acknowledgement that rankles more than the inconvenience itself.

Will come round later tonight or tomorrow to start being of some assistance hopefully. Thanks for your kind words, but to be fair I did very little of the original work compared to all the others involved, but it's been so long ago now that I can't remember all the names Beyond Perecles I do remember Liquidangel did a lot of mining, clearing out gold in particular, but there were several others involved too and maybe some of them are still around and might notice this thread and say hi PS history wise judging from my own playtime this would have been done around late 2013.

I have a bug open for some of this behavior, I'll add your post to it as well. I've noticed that the snowballs don't always 'appear' at the same time after I take the previous batch. I've even picked up the snowman to be sure it wasn't sitting inside and just not showing outside (you can do this when you have 1 person who doesn't see and one who does. Also, when you are not seeing the snowballs, try to remember if you came from a mine, came from an upper story, embarked or disembarked from a vehicle, etc. Any details or reproduction you can find helps

we already have trees sticking through cavern ceilings (although it's not as prominent as it used to be) turning this part of them into roots, might be a lovely thing to see. (this one is a chestnut, most of the others don't poke through anymore) there's about 3-4 mycellium suggestion threads concerning various heterotrophic life forms that exist in environments starved of light. (Funghi are more animal than plant) and many of them are bioluminescent. as for clutter.. well.. outside we hear ducks but never see them.. inside the caves we can hear light rubble falling against rock, but we never see it. any suggestion that introduces continuity gets my vote +1 (for on deed and off deed but not on reinforced tiles)

The main reason I made the suggestion at all is that to me, as is, Summon Soul is yet another one of those Easy-Mode changes that takes away from the harsh grueling world that I once knew as Wurm. Specifically if you couple this spell with a high level insanity character, I get a random teleport once every hour that I can use to go hunting without ever leaving my house. I have a Recall Home I can use, a Karma Teleport, as well as now being able to run a naked priest alt anywhere and summon my main character there... It's just a lot of teleporting in a world where I thought the general idea was that you CANT TELEPORT? Like we have boats and horses for a reason. I used to like the fact that if I wanted to GO somewhere I actually had to set time aside and put effort into getting there, cause it wasn't as simple as teleporting... I remember the absolute conniption that was thrown when karma porting was introduced, and some people still swear by it as one of the best/worst additions to the game in many years. (TC claims it was the reason MR botched three of their kingdoms on Chaos, go figure. (JK, TDL, and Macedon)) (it couldn't have been because we had over 200 members, now could it...)

What other game costs as much as Wurm Online, and limits you to a single character for that cost? What other game punishes your actions with fails to make the game more interesting and fun? What other game gives lower skill gains per action to lengthen the amount of time it takes to accomplish something? What other game has no real end game for the first 10 years of game play? What other game still parties like it's 1999? What other game has such a devoted fan-base that is worried sick about it's future! I don't know either.

I'm gonna link the suggestion I posted in the suggestions & ideas section as it is relevant to this rework of the HoTA system. Chaos isn't the only PvP server (though it practically speaking seems to be these days), and the map on Elevation is centered around something that won't be existing when this rework comes.

Freedomites, Epicurians, Chaotians lend me your vocabularic comprehension! Hear ye hear ye! In the year of our lords and dark demoness' 1062 the peoples of the Wurm realms have been subjected to a vile plague that threatens our populations. Our top priests have identified the source of this scourge and have given it a name. Toxic Player Syndrome. They also recommended ostracizing the infected vermin from our sewers. Toxic Player Syndrome is a social plague spread through contact with contaminated ink used primarily when inscribing documents in far away lands. We do not support the use of documents outside our realm, or far away lands for that matter. Still, this plague washed up on our shores and threatened to infect our peoples with no regard of nobility or cleanliness. Victims of the plague may exhibit symptoms such as bloodshot eyes, unusual facial hair growth, clumps of hair missing from head, loud voices in unusual octaves, and uncontrollable bouts of cursing and screaming. Our healers will do their best to reach your afflicted ones and provide treatment or carts to haul off those who have achieved a pungent stature. Remember to bathe no less than once per year to ward off these foreign borne maladies. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Plague Carriers of 1062 Mechanic Dingov Mattown ...some other people for other reasons just for the heck of it. (because they needed to be removed!) *The names listed above were the known forum identities of those banned, not necessarily the actual names of the banned game accounts. ------------------------------ For the rest of the universe! Greetings Wurmians! During Wurm year 1062 someone thought it would be oh so funny to breach the access of accounts of our members by violating the security of their private forums. We have identified the culprits and are removing them and others from Wurm Online as to protect our community from these unscrupulous individuals. This violation occurred through resources not connected to Wurm Online or its services and there has been no breach of our security, but this is an attack on our active players and we will not willingly tolerate this kind of behavior. If you have shared your accounts with these individuals we strongly urge you to secure those accounts as Wurm Online and Code Club AB are not liable for losses incurred from account sharing which we do not offer support with. We are doing our best to help the affected individuals regain their accounts and items so that they may continue with their lives. Appeals of shared account bans will be processed normally for review. Appeals of those directly connected to the violations will not even be entertained. Thank you, Team Wurm Online P.S. Some feel that we should have stopped PVP in Wurm Online due to this situation that occurred against one of our pmk kingdoms. I would like to bring a touch of clarity as to why this was not done. This occurred due to a 3rd party system that we have no control or support for and was ran by players and was their sole responsibility. It would have been a horrible precedent to interfere with the proper operations of Wurm Online for such a thing. We have options that do not require us to cancel a vital component of Wurm Online on knee-jerk reactions. We have also noticed that there is also misinformation spreading among players about our actions as moderators. The facts are simple. The damage was done even before the affected could alert us. We as moderators have not been sitting idly by and letting these "cheaters" "get away with it". We searched for the lost items and as soon as we could we confiscated them. I hope that at least clears up a bit of the misinformation. ------------------------------ For those who find themselves banned! Greetings Earthanoidal creature! We will not play these games with you. You have done something vile and reprehensible that we will not stand by and tolerate. We will not entertain the notion that metagaming access to other player's accounts is acceptable behavior. We do our best to provide an entertaining and encouraging environment in which to spend your time with us and our members. You have gone beyond acceptable social behaviors and committed acts that are both illegal and deplorable. Do not expect any personal correspondence with us as you know very well what you did and why you have earned your bans! Some of you are banned due to the recent attack on one of our player made kingdoms in a pvp environment via metagaming, and some of you are no longer welcome in Wurm Online for the consistent bad behavior and gaming of the system to avoid penalties. Do not expect any personal correspondence with us as you know very well what you did and why you have earned your bans! We will gladly continue on without your metagaming and abuse of our system. Good Bye, Team Wurm Online
