Hi Everyone, As previously promised, I've taken the time to write a postmortem of the stability issues Independence has had, along with our future plans for server hosting. Independence began to lag considerably some time before February 7th. We had done a maintenance restart as scheduled and had hoped this would fix the issue. It did not. Later in the day we restarted only Independence in an attempt to fix the lag. During this restart I rebooted the server that Independence runs on and upgraded packages. This didn’t resolve the lag either, which I was beginning to suspect was hardware-related. By February 8th, we had a fairly good idea that a drive in the RAID was failing, so we began to move Independence to spare hardware. That hardware was our old Bridges test server, for those interested. It wasn’t new by any means, but it did have fewer cycles on it and the drives were fresher. Independence lived here for about two weeks while we worked on restoring the previous hardware. In the end. Hetzner replaced the failed drive as well as the entire hardware, leaving just one of the older drives with all the data. I restored the RAID and we upgraded the operating system as well as all packages. I had done this on a test server already, but the intention was to make Independence the first server to get this treatment in quite some time. You may have recalled that we were planning a very long downtime in the future. This was to do the same to all other servers and get things back up to date. Well, more on that in a bit. In the end, Independence is still experiencing lag and we’re quite aware of it. I believe this to be hardware related once again, and we will monitor as it continues. The sad part is that all of these issues overshadowed the fine work Samool did to reduce lag across all servers. We can move Independence back to the spare hardware should it become needed, though I am trying to isolate the problem. If it becomes unplayable though, we’ll do the move. While Independence was taking up all my time, Xanadu wanted some attention as well. You may recall a few crashes experienced. Well, these were long-standing and known crashes that we were unable to trace before. Thanks to the scrutiny and diagnostics tools we’ve had running to single out lag hot spots, we were able to trace the crashes back and fix them. Finally. One of these issues actually took Celebration down back in January. All of this was completely unrelated to the issues Independence was facing, and yet it made our stability look pretty awful. Budda and I were working on solutions in the background, not just for our stability issues but for a number of other problems as well. Hetzner has not been the most reliable host for many here, with network slowdowns and hiccups. Even router outages and emergency work that left us helpless as people were unable to play. Working with Rolf, we developed a plan to move from Hetzner and onto a more stable infrastructure with Amazon Web Services. This move is in its early stages. I am in the process of writing the code for the infrastructure and I am planning on standing up our test instances there first. If all goes well, I can begin writing the live server infrastructure and we can write up a future plan on the move and the required downtime to make this happen. This is what I meant by that extended downtime in the future - instead of patching up old hardware, we will be moving to new instances in a reliable cloud environment. For those concerned, we plan on using the Frankfurt, EU location so the servers won’t be “moving” all that far. I’ve had a lot of experience with AWS and I am very excited for what this means. While we maintain backups right now, all of this will become more secure and easier to manage. We can allocate more resources to a specific server if it becomes needed, or scale back and save money if a server becomes less populated. It means flexibility and stability for Wurm now and into the future, especially with the option to purchase reserved resources. I’m excited and I ask for everyone to have patience while we work through this transition. If anyone is curious, I can detail the infrastructure a bit once I’ve ironed out the details. Until then, happy Wurming!

For me it's about that not all people are the same. Some people are more and some less social, boundaries are different for everyone. Like in real life i wouldn't like to be roommate with anyone except the girlfriend that i am in long relationship with the same way I don't want to have villagers in Wurm as i like my privacy, nor neighbors that are too close like their deed is next to my perimeter. People usualy go on this with stupid argument why do you play mmo if you are not social, and why don't you play Unlimited. The answer is simple, i want to be part of larger ecosystem but with my privacy kept inside it, and with ability to be social as much as it suits me at the moment. And that's it, people have different needs and different playstyles and there is enough space in these depopulated vastelands for both kind, there is nothing bad or good with it, there are benefits and loses with both choices and everyone weights what is best for him

"You shall not see your brother’s donkey or his ox fallen down by the way and ignore them; You shall help him to lift them up again." Deuteronomy 22:4 Seleas(Edward Keene) was always giving, always honourable and a good hearted person. I simply wanted to share the knowledge of his passing with those of you who may have remembered his time here. To be brief and to my best knowledge: Edward stopped to help a person change a tire on the I4 in Florida around 1am on Feb 18th 2019, during which a car struck him well off the shoulder of the right lane. The Driver failed to stop but was apprehended soon thereafter. I need not post the news story here, it is easily searchable on google if desired. I was an online friend exclusively for roughly 3 years, but over that time we spent many hours gaming and simply chatting, I WILL miss him. Please feel free to post positive comments/tales of adventure here! Farewell Edward...

The cheeky forest giant has been found and we have it penned down, very securely.. no , we do. The slaying will be on Saturday night, aiming to make it an all time zone friendly slay. Should be 11pm UK, 5pm Saturday USA and 10am Sunday Australia. 'The Forest Giant is a unique creature that roams the forests of Wurm. The Forest Giant is armed with a 65ql Huge Club that it will use for attacking and parrying. The Forest Giant is easily recognised due to its massive size and antlers. When slain, every premium player in local will receive blood. Mixing Forest Giant blood with source salt will create a Potion of woodcutting.' The location will be up on Friday. We will roll some loot to fighters that will appear on the list abstracted from Niarja, minus alts. Pre-warning, you may want to bring stamina sandwiches and stay on climb during the fight, its rather high up.. if he throws you, it won't be that pleasant! Go up the tunnel as normal and follow the land across once up top, heading southeast.

-1, new players would never get a chance to start, another silly silly idea to deal with a non-existant problem. There is absolutely nothing wrong with playing on free alts, annoying maybe but not game breaking where the devs should waste a minute of time thinking about placating the lazy forum warriors on this one. You know what stops free alts from exploring, fences. They are already coded in the game, imagine that? Stop playing the forums and play the game.

Foggy morning - Kasumi Hi Everyone! It's been a rough few weeks with ups and downs, and we know everyone is feeling a little drained by it, but rest assured, we are working through these issues and coming up with plans to resolve each and every one. Some of these plans may take a little longer to get into effect than others, but there is a path! I myself have been bobbing along working on Archaeology on Independence, I'm keen for 90, I can taste it! (I'm leaving so many fragments behind I think I need a maid though). Now it's time to touch on what we've been up to, we've got some good news ahead to lets get to it But first... Patch Notes WU Beta! It's been a long time coming, but with a lot of changes with the new tutorial system, fishing and everything else in the past six months WU will be getting a huge update in the coming weeks. We are working on an internal build and will have a beta build up as soon as we can for all the modders and hosts to ensure everything will run smoothly. Laggy hidden bugs! With our ongoing work on fixing lag with server side polling tweaks, we have encountered a few instances where improving the lag has caused other bugs to come out of the woodworks. This is what resulted in the crash on Xanadu earlier this week. Improving the servers speed in saving to the database by avoiding unnecessary polling and querying in batches has unearthed some issues with server configuration. Todays restart is focused on addressing that configuration error before it causes more crashes. As for the independence issues, we believe this to be due to the disk replacement or new hardware and are currently investigating. We are also currently in the process of looking for a more permanent solution to the hosting issues we have been facing in the recent weeks. We do understand the lag can be quite frustrating so want a resolution quickly. Once we have a solid plan on the next steps we will share them, along with a detailed postmortem of the server issues we have been facing. Alongside the 5 hours sleep bonus, we'll also be giving out a 3 day premium code for all players to redeem! This code will be available after tomorrows restart (not todays) along with the 5 hours sleep bonus. Far far away With vast improvements in client performance, we continue to look at ways to improve the look and feel of the game, and one area inparticular is the long distance terrain being rather bare. As you can see below, Samool has gotten his ever talented mind on the task of improving the look of distant terrain and I have to say, it looks amazing. That's it from us this week, we hope you enjoy the sleep bonus and premium time as our way of saying thanks for putting up with the issues, hopefully soon we'll have a solution guaranteed to end it to share with you all. Until then though, Keep on Wurming! Retrograde & the Wurm team

Not sure if this has been brought up before but I think it would be really nice to be able to make forges, ovens, fireplaces, etc.. out of clay bricks or even other types of stone or iron/steel. Thoughts?

In some form? I don't hate the slate slab texture, but I do like the old texture better. Perhaps it could return as slate brick floors - 10x brick & 10x mortar, analogous to stone brick floors. Edit: Having thought about it, I prefer the new slate brick texture that appears on road tiles. If we could have that as a house floor that would be sweet. It looks ever so slightly darker than the ones I remember.

Hello, For as far as I have seen, these (Unknown Source) errors always seem to be connection based. It seems something, somewhere on your computer or your route, is blocking your access to the wurm servers. Are you perhaps on a corporate network instead of a home network? Company networks (especially military based) often seem to block wurm (or java in specific). Perhaps an anti virus threat detection / anti malware program that is a bit too cautious with Java? What security program(s) are you using? Did it work before? It might just be a temporary error in your routing somewhere, outside of your influence if so. There might be a way to check if it is a problematic network or something on your PC. Do you have another network nearby you could connect to and see if wurm loads that way? Can also try to turn your mobile phone into hotspot / tethering mode, connect through this, and launch wurm. Your mobile phone should have no restrictions this way, and hence if you still get the error, it is rather certain the problem is in your PC, while if it does connect, the problem is most likely in the network. Having this knowledge makes it much easier to find out what is causing this A VPN might be one way to try as well, if you have access to this.

So what your saying is: that when I started playing this game many years ago, and was killed by a noob griefer within 20 minutes of starting the game, I should have been banned from playing? This was before the ability of noobs to even keep their gear on death, it was stolen and disposed of somewhere. How is that supposed to help the game add players? I was attacked by a Noob Griefer carrying a Troll Club at the starter town - by definition that is PvP I wandered off into the wilderness and survived by searching the wiki, learning about crude tools and making them. I got lucky and found a fire starter. The rest is history. Sorry but this is a really, really bad idea.

Know what? You are right, guys! I can now clearly see a dragon's head and neck: So, keeping in mind that the prominent summit in the southeast corner is called "Dragontooth Peak", what about: A = Dragonhead Bay B = Dragon's Neck @Ayes: I'm not a native speaker, but isn't a "cove" more like a small, cosy bay?

Hello! I am the "egotistic person" Qdalty so fondly talks about! You know, I have been silent all this time as you have gone all around the forums bashing me for absolutely no reason. I really do not understand how it exploded to the point it did and really it doesn't matter anymore. The mods did a great job of removing your unwarranted insults and I decided to simply give you best wishes and move on. But I wont stand idly while you brush under the carpet the mess you made and the drama you caused just because (as some people suggest) you may have misunderstood because of a language barrier. Let me start by stating clearly and plainly I never called you a botter, nor do I think you are one. I do not know you, never have, and never had a reason to think you are or have ever been one. I was simply stating (as many others have and tried to make you understand) that it was simply a way to achieve the skill needed in such a short time frame and that I did not wish to engage in it. It had nothing to do with you. But instead of accepting the fact that it was not intended as a personal attack, you decided to run amok on the forums smearing my name with false accusations and even going as far as to put up your deed and characters for sale stating me as the reason for it. Despite all of this I wished you the best wherever you ended up, no hard feelings. Then it turns out you did not sell a thing as you claimed on your sale threads and even got to keep your deed you supposedly were moving out of. So in the end nothing changed. False alarm guys! All is right in the world! I'm truly glad you decided to stay, and I really hope what you say here is true, that you reconsidered your choices after an immense outpour of support from friends. I really believe our community is that great and that they come together to help those who are down to bring them closer and help them get back up. However it begs the question: was all this "I am going to quit because someone said something mean on the internet" drama just a ploy on a smear campaign and to garner sympathy from our great community? Was me saying "how can I do this without macroing" as a genuine question and critic to an antiquated system on a post not referring to you so horrible and unforgivable you need to go on such a self destructive path, even after myself and others tried so hard to correct your misinterpretation? Or were you just trying to rally people to your cause in order to point your finger at me further, someone you don't even know? After all, several people called it. I had someone even tell me: So it makes me wonder after you made statements like these: Was that "sale" even real? Are you saying you made a public sale, a person paid you and was okay with waiting a week for you to give them the character details, and then you magically refunded the person his money and everyone went their own way happily ever after? Why didn't you request payment when you returned it and instead decided to take it in advance? I am sure this is not as clean as you made it sound. Why did you go through all this trouble? What was the point? What were you trying to accomplish? And if I really insulted you in such a way to deserve this, would you be willing to provide evidence of any kind? In the end none of this matters. I will still extend the olive branch and forget about the whole incident provided you stop pretending you were injured by some evil internet overlord. Lets stop with the pretenses and sillyness, shake hands and call it a day, okay? Wurm is just to nice a place to be petty. Its better to just be friends.

Think about it this way. If you go to a bar and meet a stranger to yap about the whole evening with, its reasonable to assume at some point you will buy them a beer. Here im the US a beer at a bar averages 5 dollars. If you pay someone else 2 beers a week thats over 40 dollars a month. This can exponentially increase with the amount of beers you decide to pay your friend. In Wurm, a sizeable deed enough to host several plots for housing is 3 silver a month. That's about 4 US dollars. This mean I can host someone in Wurm for less than the cost of a single beer at a bar. I get to pay for a deed with enough space to hold several friends and pretty much all of us will ever need for less than the cost of a beer at your average bar. Sure this may vary from country to country, but the sentiment is the same. Now lets look at what I get for my 4 dollars other than just an economic decision: Im general, 2 players wont level their characters the same way. So there is the possibility your friend will level a skill you dont have. Or that they will help you with your digging project. Or maybe they will be in local to accept that order you placed in the forums, while you are logged off and asleep. But better yet, you may get to meet someone you may enjoy spending your nights chatting with on discord. To most of us Wurm is form of social interaction or stress relief of some kind. And what better way to do that than surrounded with friends? Btw, welcome back Vern. You should come and join us in Indy!

So I got to thinking, there are a lot of minor, everyday annoyance in wurm. My current pet peeve is sudden withering (from very old sprouting to withered overnight), it's a bugger. I dread this happening to my trellises since I can't simply remake them! The thing is, it's one of many tiny annoyances in wurm every day. Removing them would remove a lot of the challenge from the game, but giving an alternative fix might be something nice. And this is where unicorn horn wands come in. Take one unicorn horn (weight of 1.5), have a jewellery smith attach a gem (product QL capped by gem QL, weight = 2), then have a priest cast a spell on the wand (or use the appropriate spell rune on a wand) to give it an effect. ANYONE can use a wand and wands vanish once their QL drops below 0. Unicorn Horn Wand + Wild Growth = Wand of Rejuvenation (use on a withered tree/bush/trellis to turn it back into a very old tree at the cost of 20 favour and 5 wand QL) A couple more examples: Unicorn Horn Wand + Heal = Wand of Curing (use on any diseased player or animal to remove disease at the cost of 30 favour and 10 wand QL) Unicorn Horn Wand + Mend = Pottery Sealing Wand (use on any damaged pottery item to remove 20 damage at the cost of 20 favour and 5 wand QL) Unicorn Horn Wand + Strongwall = Wand of Stable Footing (use on any unreinforced mine floor tile to reinforce it (default reinforced floor texture) at the cost of 30 favour and 20 wand QL) Optional Extra: Give priests a damage reduction on wands [Damage =Base Damage*(1-(channeling/200))] Edit: Changed borked formula

Something I always felt was missing from rifts was a climactic battle at the end; usually the initial part of wave 3 is tough, but then it gets really easy by the end. Also, on larger servers getting home is a real bugger at 4am in the morning after a rift. Thus, I propose that at the end of each rift, if certain conditions are met (high number of premium players in local with contributions over a certain level), one final wave spawns after participation awards are given; the rift dragon. The rift dragon being much stronger than a regular dragon, with a large rift wide AoE attack, and with an unusual tweak; the dragon's attacks deal extra damage to anyone wearing dragon/drake/moonmetal armour. It will always head back to the rift area and, if not killed within an hour, it despawns and the rift ends as per normal When killed, anyone who passes a reasonable (10+?) participation score on the initial rift, or lands a blow on the rift dragon, earns a random piece of loot: Rift Dragon Bone Fragments - Can be crafted into a rune that can be applied to any item (essentially a multi-material rune) Rift Dragon Scales - Can be used on an item to give them an extra rune slot (100% success rate) Rift Dragon Blood - Acts like a single use of silvery fluid (prevents 1 shatter on an item), or can be consumed to teleport a player home Rift Dragon Heart - Grants one free use of teleport corpse (karma skill) No corpse is left behind, instead a temporary (1 hr duration) portal opens that takes an player that uses it back to their home deed token on that server, along with their ridden mount (passengers get taken to the pilot's home deed).

Rest in peace to another good-hearted wurmian. This news really strikes. If there is some way to maybe startup a memorial garden somewhere for players passed on, I would do what I could to help out. This is a community of real people. Maybe our gms could make a memorial area for everyone to visit at-will somewhere. Incredibly sorry to hear this.

LoF is a much stronger spell then cure light, focused will, etc. It SHOULD have a longer cast timer than the others. By your logic, we might as well make full heal a 10 second cast too.
  26. 1 point
No program should be able to BSOD or hang your computer by itself. While BSODs usually indicate some kind of system instability, screen freezing is often caused by overheating or bad drivers too - so you might want to try updating your graphics drivers. Other than that, it's just issues with the system itself or the machine. Perhaps the benchmarks you're using aren't putting an equally high load on both CPU and GPU, and maybe Wurm hangs for you in those situations? As a workaround: do you play with the frame limiter turned on (Graphics settings)? That should ease the load since without that, it's just running as fast as it can until it gets bottlenecked by something.

Everyone with his/her own experiences. To me, Wurm Online was by far the best game when it come to GM interactions, support, etc. I can name here GM Astarte, GM Enki but not only. I am pretty sure that nobody could change that opinion. Big thanks to all Wurm staff.
  32. 1 point
Perhaps, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Wurm is not dwindling because of RNG. Wurm is dwindling because its an aging game. Wurm reached its peak some time ago, with servers full to the brim with players, enough that new servers had to be made so people could find spots big enough to drop deeds. Certainly the players did not mind the rng then. What I always try to beat into you during our chats on discord is not everyone dislikes the system like you do. Rng doesnt equal suckage and evil. If that was the case, there would be no casinos. Its just not your cup of tea!

@RoccandilYou are playing on serenity for this testing right? I think PVP servers have mechanics in place to make transmutation of tiles much, much harder then Freedom/Non-pvp servers. That might explain why some people seem to say it's not too bad compared to your experiences. Have you considered this aspect? ~Nappy
