    Mental illness is a topic not many talk about. There’s a definite taboo surrounding it, on top of the general fact that most people don’t know how to handle it on either side of the equation. I’ve been on both sides of the equation, and I know it’s difficult. What do you say to someone who comes to you and admits they want to harm themselves? What do you do when you feel the need to talk to someone but are too afraid people will leave? So I am deciding to share some of my story here. To encourage people to listen if asked to listen, and to seek help if they feel they need to. Asking for help is okay! Admitting that there’s a problem is the first and hardest step. Supporting your friends who have admitted that there’s a problem is key in helping them become better. I’d like to start with an apology. Over the years, I have come off rather rude at times and I’ve even picked fights with members of this community. I fully accept responsibility for this, and one important thing for me is to never blame my actions on something else. They are mine. I came to a point in life where I was depressed, and as such, I took it out on others. I sought help for the depression, but nothing seemed to work. Soon other symptoms piled up, including a crippling anxiety and even some mania. The depression made it hard for me to do anything, including keep up with my duties here. The anxiety stopped me from doing even the simplest things, such as grocery shopping. The mania ranged from being my most productive times, all the way to a hypomania state where I was a danger to myself and others. I didn’t remember much about my hypomania moments. The rest made life difficult, leading me to feel some unpleasant things. I wouldn’t say I was close to “ending it all”, indeed I had been closer in my earlier life. I simply didn’t want to exist. Thankfully that began to change in 2017. I finally made the call to seek help, and I was first diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety. Well, the depression medication worked some, and the anxiety medication helped reduce the panic attacks. I decided to do something crazy though, and I went to a convention for the first time in my life. The entire weekend was amazing, even though I was shaking most of it. I put myself through the ringer, under medication and with my therapist on call, and I came out alive. Unfortunately things only improved so much. In 2018 I ended up improving my living situation, but I still found myself crippled with depression. Worse, the mania and hypomania was increasing. I had no idea what this was, but I welcomed the mania. Who needs sleep when I was getting so much done! I ended up working over 100 hours a week at my previous job a few times. Great, I guess? I finally made another call to admit that things weren’t going as good as I had been indicating. Yes, it was silly of me to lie to my therapist and psychiatrist, but I don’t like change. I started recounting how I only felt good when I was busy with work. I mentioned sleep was a problem, but I figured it was the caffeine I was drinking. Then a memory hit me of just a day ago when I “went crazy” in my car and tried to see if I could take a corner at a high rate of speed. I’m usually reserved and safe, but I remember feeling god-like. I could do anything. I was invincible. Well, that lead into a string of memories that were all very similar and I started unraveling the hypomanic states where I not only did reckless things that could’ve hurt myself, but times when I nearly hurt others as well. I was re-diagnosed as bipolar and needless to say I was not well for a week or two. The guilt of what I had done in the past weighted heavily, and still does. I’m doing a lot better now, though not perfect. I need to make that call yet again, and I will. I at least know what I’m up against now. I’m not saying I’ll be perfect. I may still have my moments, but I’ve been making an effort to remember and apologize when I do. I’m really not a mean or angry person at heart. While I can endure criticism and “hate”, under it all I love this game and what I do. That about sums up my story. Remember that it is okay to ask for help, and it is okay to not know how to help one who asks. Be supportive and if you find yourself in that weird position of not knowing how to help your friend, recommend they seek help. We can’t always fix ourselves without help. I hope this story helps some, either with their own troubles or in understanding “what the hell is wrong with Keenan”. I’m not asking forgiveness of those I’ve offended, but I do hope this explains things a bit. I wish you all well.

    It is only when we speak openly and honestly that the stigma surrounding mental health issues will finally stop. I have two adult sons.During their entire life I had stressed over and over, there is absolutely no shame in asking for help. In fact, it takes a real man to speak up and say "I need help". I stressed over and over that mental health is as important, if not more important than, your physical health. Sadly, because of the stigma society places on mental health issues my son did not seek help. Just over a year ago one of my sons hit his breaking point before getting the help he needed and he attempted to take his own life. Despite talking to him frequently, and having what I think is a good relationship I failed to see the warning signs. I am happy to say after a day in the hospital, ten days in an inpatient treatment center , two different psychologists and three different therapists (you have to find one that feels "right" for you, that's uber important!) he's doing VERY well. I am so proud of you for speaking out and letting people know that mental health issues are not something taboo. Mental illness is just that; an illness. It is something that needs to be treated just as if you had any other chronic illness. That they happen to people every day. And that help is available, although not always as easy to get as it needs to be (my opinion, and another rant).

    Enabling first person headbob as a default, always on feature is not a good idea. I noticed it within instants of logging in. There was something dramatically wrong with my field of view. I thought that there was something wrong with my video card for a second. In real life, there is no such thing as 'first person headbob' unless you are drugged, injured, or disabled. Games don't NEED to be true to real live, but visual sensory input is one of areas in a video game, where one needs to be careful. If you want to implement first person headbob when a head wound is received, cool! If you want to implement inebriation, and have first person headbob be a symptom, that's fine too. Maybe poison, dehydration, or starvation could cause it too. But healthy human eyesight DOES NOT DO THIS. Our eyes and brain work together to display a steady view of the world. Please remove this 'feature' as a default. If you must implement it, implement it where it makes sense.

    Could we get some sort of saddle racks or displays, now that we have a number of available items for our horses! Something similar to the armour racks, to be able to store our saddles and gear on, preferably functioning! But even if its just some sort of decoration would be nice. Another item to work our fine carp on!

    Good evening folks of Indy! -> South Haven Canal connecting Elysian Lake and Crystal Lake finished! Open for all Ships and looking for Heritage status! <- We are on the ingame map around Q 20. Many people of Indy might remember slight attempts to dig a canal between Crystal lake and the Elysian Lake since Indy started, but this important Infrastructure connection was never started for real and never finished, until now! I am proud to announce to you, i have dug and mined for weeks to present you this grand Canal and Tunnel, and hopeing it might even appeal to GM team. I started the digging around when Haven landing was founded as well December 2018, the dirt layer in the area is very high, the rock layer very low. I finished the Canal and Tunnel parts this week mid February. ----------------------------- The beginnings of the south side: The beginnings of the north side Looks from above the hill that was carved into Mid stage Look faceing South East End stage Look on the Hill that contains the tunnel part of the Canal - faceing South The look from the Top of the Hill, faceing to the north - The marble brazier pillar act as lighthouse, guiding ships savely into the Canal! The Tunnel inside - faceing the North Exit The area is mainly Sandstone Veins, so i decided the Thema shall be warm yellowish red colors to reflect the natural occurences of the local veins The South Exit - On the south side i found a few Silver veins, so i decided for Marble white colors, which also makes the normal gloomy cave look much brighter! You can see, the canal is 30 slope deep, allowing every ship type, it also has a sideroad, allowing criss-crossing of carts under the hill and even above the hill, on the sideroads i surface mined into the hillside ? --------------------- Edit: My South Haven Canal on Q 20 allows every ship type, however if you sail to it from the south coast, you have to sail throught a tunnel at the south-eastern side, which is deeded by Damascussteel, who seems to pause the game right now, since December. This tunnel might not be useable by all ships, i have to look into that. Perhaps @Damascuscan message /pm me on forums or ingame about that area, in a post below i had seen you answered ? Wurm is waiting for you, come in and join me again with the mineing, we had fun! Until i have more intel, please be careful if you come from the south coast. The sailing from north lake to south lake through Q 20 area, is deep enough for all ships. Edit2: Damascus finished the South Part of the Canal! Hurray! And thank you a lot! The South part is now 2 tiles wide deep channel 25 deep, which allows all ships, even your very biggest Caravel! The whole Elysian-Crystal Route is now sailable and deep enough! -------------------------- I want to Thank Damascussteel, who made this project possible, for he mined the connection into the lake South-east of this canal last year. He also helped a lot with mineing and collapsing the Mine openings. I want to Thank @HughMongus, the leader of the Albia alliance, for putting the canal onto their community map, and Webleywickers for helping in digging, mineing and dredging. I also want to Thank my neighboring deed mayor @Voochand his Villager Thicket supporting the project with lots of delicious meals and pizza and lots of alcohol such as met and moonshine! Very good kitchen! I want to thank various players in the Freemasons alliance for donating parts for many support beams! I want to thank the countless players for selling me crates ?     Vaelir's Deed. Greetings Wurmians! Apparently this news is a little late, oops! We’ve been pretty busy dealing with some rather unfortunate hardware issues, we’ll fill you in on that in this week's news, so let’s get on with it! But first... Patch Notes: Independence issues. The lag independence has been experiencing was identified as a failure on one of the drives on the server, which was causing major delays when reading from the database. Upon identifying this our server hero admin Keenan performed extended maintenance during which the databases were moved to another hardware setup. This is a temporary issue while we perform maintenance on the Independence hardware and some time in the near future we will be undergoing an extended downtime period for all servers to perform necessary system maintenance as well. Alongside this we are also investigating the causes for the recent upturn in lag, this will take some time as we run profiling software on each server, identifying when it lags and why. We know dealing with lag is a major pain so it’s our current priority to address and resolve as soon as possible, we do appreciate your patience with it and once we’re in the clear we’ll look at what forms of compensation might be worthwhile. ‘Tis the season! Almanacs, examine, mouseovers, so much text to see if your tree or bush is ripe for the harvest, but what about the items? Coming very soon is a graphics update that displays fruit, berries and all those harvestable goodies directly on the tree. As you can see below, Saroman is always working hard on making Wurm look as alive as possible! This is expected to go out in the next few days, so if you see a graphics pack update, that will be why! That’s it from us this week, we’ll be hard at work addressing the hardware and lag issues and hopefully have some more info soon about the dates for the extended downtime.     It has taken a while; well, in fact, it has taken much longer as expected; but as of today, Fraggle Rock Canal is an offical Herritage Site. Many thanks to Ajala for helping me out on this. And many thanks to the GM's that had to come back every time because things weren't beautiful enough, but never ran out of patience. If I ever make another application, I'll know what to be prepared for.     Mental health is a very important issue, and needs all the attention it can get. I dont suffer from any mental health issue, as i know of. But i am glad whenever someone with experience on the topic sheds some light on it. Its kind of hard for someone who is «ok» with everyday life to know the symptoms and clues to look for, and its even worse to find the right things to say when someone approaches with difficulties. Thanks, and congrats, for bringing this up. I imagine it takes more courage than i would have. Keep wurming, keep smiling, keep talking.

    That takes tremendous courage to post especially in this environment. I revere that level of character in a person, and you've gained a bit more respect from me for it. One shouldn't ever be ashamed of a mental illness as much as one wouldn't be for breaking a leg or having pancreatitis. Your struggles are not unique to those wrestling with mental illness often not understanding first why or even seeing there is a problem, to then making the quantum leap to treatment and the often hit more miss trial of diagnosing and medicating correctly to feel your authentic self again. I'm proud of you. This is something i have wondered about or thought to myself of you privately when dealing with you on and off staff but i must say also you always had the compassion and character to later come to me of your own free will to say sorry and in some way admit wrong. That's more than most do. There are many more people in this game suffering mental illness of a many variety and across varying spectrums of that. You will find understanding and acceptance and this will only serve to help you further and encourage you even more. My support is here for you. Truly courageous! Keep fighting the good fight, and reserve the angst to turn it on that. Thank you for giving of yourself here, as well as in work.

    More first person games have the camera follow animations than not. It's a toggle, you're not forced to use it. Some animations will still be adjusted, I know Saroman is working on the idle standing one so that it doesn't float around.

    World of Tanks had its own voice implementation, and it sucked. Nearly everyone used Discord/Teamspeak anyhow. (I note that WoT is a much better-funded game.) What would VoIP offer that Discord doesn't?

    I have looked everywhere but unfortunately I could not find any API for Wurm (Which I expected to be there )... It would be great if Wurm made available some sort of RESTful API from which you can retrieve account information, player information ( who's online in your village ) and all the other goodies! It could be done with a simple API key/token method which you could create in the account section. This shouldn't be much work to do as the data is already available somewhere, just make player / village data available to a player. A good example is EVE Online, which has his own API and where players have made online interfaces, apps and all sort of nice stuff with it. With this, I would like to build a web application / website for our village and would gladly release source codes for others to easily integrate this for themselves.

    Welcome to Hindleap Horses! Situated in a peaceful forest just west of Summerholt, I breed the 8 'new' colours mainly, but I generally get other colours too. I'm aiming to produce a mixture of horses bred for speed and draft traits, ideally with the 'certain spark' trait which increases horses' life span by 3 months to a total of 9 months of life. **Notes on the new traits system** Since the recent animal husbandry update, there have been many changes to the traits system. The details on the update can be found here, but I'll put a brief explanation on what it means for horses, donkeys and mules here. Instead of the old 5 speed horses which were the best you could make, there are now 4 speed horses. These are functionally the same for riding. Horses with 3 or more speed traits have the new 'hot blooded' body shape, which is similar to that of real Arabian horses. The new speed traits are: You'll notice that only 3 of those traits affect movement on land, which is what we're doing 99% of the time! So if you get a 3 speed horse that's only lacking the accustomed to water (AW) trait, you have as good a riding horse as a 4 speed. There is a 5th rare speed trait, 'it is unbelievably fast' (UF), which means the animal is 'always on speed bonus similar to hell horses'. Rare traits are, obviously, rare; but when combined with the other 4 speed traits will be the fastest horses we can get. We now also have draft traits which affect an animal's ability to pull vehicles. Horses with 3 or more draft traits get the 'cold blooded' body type which is like a real Shire or Clydesdale horse. There are 4 common draft traits which are as follows: Similar to the speed traits, there is a trait that doesn't affect pulling ability, but the damage taken to gear (EG). This again means that draft horses with only the other 3 traits will be as useful for pulling vehicles as those with 4 draft traits. There are 2 rare draft traits, 'it seems stronger than normal' (SN) which gives a bonus to their ability to carry, and 'it seems more nimble than normal' (NN) which increases the maximum ridable slope. Draft horses are better than speed horses for pulling vehicles, but remain reasonable riding horses when equipped with good gear. **How to find me** Hindleap is in G23 on Xanadu as shown above. There is a main road from Summerholt and the turnoff onto the gravel path to Hindleap is signposted. There is access by water from the north and just to the south at the Nexa Market and Sanctuary.     Hello everyone, As a long term player, I've struggled on and off to find a skill that has really sucked me into the game. After the cooking update, like many others, my group of friends were brought back into the game with this major change. And once I found out stills existed, I just knew I had to use them. Beverages was oddly fun to experiment with, creating new drinks, using new tools and learning a system without much documentation at all. With the help of a friend of mine, even creating a calculator to match the drink to an affinity and documenting timer length based on quality. However, our optimism of a new market being made for alcohol was quickly shattered once we found out that only moonshine with every possible ingredient gave a timer worth selling. And so, this document was created. Within, you will find changes I believe will make the skill more engaging, rewarding and interesting. And maybe even opening the door for ice sculptures, the item we all want but never knew we wanted.     Recent Valrei crafting missions have resulted in large item spam (tables, carts, racks, etc.), and I would love a more accessible way than lava/bashing to destroy them. Seems like that would be a good thing all around. Possibilities: - A large altar to sac large items (seen it suggested, not sure how you'd get a cart inside it, but hey!) - A staff/torch/wand of saccing, allowing you to activate it and sac something (probably too many PvP implications for mobile saccing, unless you had to be in the vicinity of an altar to use it) - Disassembling, ideally for parts/skillgain, but for now, I'd settle for sheer destruction.

    It's a same thing with forestry, you start harvesting fruits and if you stop you can't do it again no matter if you get fruit or not. Most likely design is to reset flag(harvestable,cleanable) upon start of action not on end which I guess make sense otherwise could be abused with continuously starting and canceling actions to create infinite source... So I doubt it's a bug.

    To clarify on this, and I plan on posting a full postmortem once I'm done: The hardware that Independence once ran on has been replaced and a new drive installed with it's RAID1 restored. Since it's newer hardware now, the intention is to move Independence back and keep the somewhat older hardware in a fresh state for future emergencies. Along with the new hardware, I've updated the operating system and several other services. We currently have a test server running on these updated systems and services, and so far it looks good. So Independence will be the first to run on the new system and the longer downtime Retrograde mentioned will be scheduled a few months out. Further details will be available once we set a specific date, but the goal is to give an advance warning as the downtime will likely be roughly 6-8 hours. I plan on collecting playtime data before deciding on a date and time to try and impact as few people as possible. I've also ran diagnostics on other servers and have found no other hardware issues as of yet. The lag spikes experienced elsewhere are definitely software-related and that's what we're looking into. I'm hesitant on announcing the changes we make to address lag for a few reasons: 1) If they don't work, everyone is disappointed. Make no mistake, while some changes are no-brainers, others are more fine-tuning and won't yield results until they're running in live. 2) Even if they do work, lag can be caused by other issues and we'd rather not make everyone try to figure out if the last patch *really* worked or not. That's what our profiling tools are for! Once we've made concrete progress, we can make a post detailing what we've done and what the results have been.

    a GM can create a lair which will increase spawn of the specified mob in the area the lair is at. Other ways are to do mission rulers in that area, so the player does something that has been specified and then the mobs spawn as specified by the mission ruler. That is how we handled dungeon spawns.

    - consider replacing the “one of these things are not like the others” endurance sandwich with a tasty beverage. I know I prefer my sandwiches in the middle of a 5 mile run, but wurmade might work too. Create a viable market for flasks! psssss. perhaps coffee could restore exhausted fatigue. At least let our beverage makers earn a coin off the botters.

    Okay. Going live on Thursday or Friday. -I rewrote most of the skill upload process. Mostly this means I fixed a few bugs where uploads would fail mysteriously but still insert partial skill dump information into the database. -You can upload basically as many skill dumps as you want simultaneously. 1000+ is fine. -A problem with one skill dump won't interrupt the others. It'll call out the problem with that specific dump then move on to other files. -Niarja will automatically dedupe skill dumps that were taken at different times on the same day. Don't think about it too hard - just throw 4000 skill dumps into the uploader and let Niarja figure it out. -Manage characters page has been updated to help people manage a larger number of skill dumps. I still think it's ugly but maybe it'll be nice later. I'll lay out future plans once this is pushed out.
