So as we all know, we got a whole bunch of new horse colors into the game, which is AWESOME. But something that concerns me a bit is how I see colors and breeds confused a lot in these horse related posts. It is not the color of a horse that will make a horse go faster or pull a heavy load, it is the blood within. The genetics. The breed. You can have a quick and nimble Arabian stallion that is colored black, brown or pinto. Just like you can have a slow and strong draft horse with those same exact colors. When I was watching Factional Fight Adam's car video, he talked about wishing for different qualities to be integrated into the colors. While I absolutely love the thought behind it and while I fully agree that it'd be great to have some variation in horse mechanics, I was wondering whether instead of matching functionalities to color, instead introduce new body shapes to represent those functionalities. Over the years, we've seen people request again and again for the game to have heavy built work horses to pull their carts - essentially what they're asking for is a cold blooded horse body shape. I on the other hand would love to see a beautiful hot blooded horse shape, such as what Arabians represent. So let's say we had three different shapes in the game: Hot, Warm and Cold. How could those be paired up with mechanics people have suggested? Hot blooded horse shape: - Has precise feet, is able to climb and descend steeper slopes - Is more agile and turns corners more nimbly and quickly while riding Warm blooded horse shape: This is the default that we have in the game now (an "all round" horse with no qualities that make it especially stand out) It would stay exactly the way it is right now. Cold blooded horse shape: - Is very strong and is able to pull carts and wagons more efficiently - Has more stamina. When ridden, is able to carry a rider with a heavy inventory without tiring out as much as the default horse. I've been thinking about this topic for years and have been meaning to play around with the horse mesh we have in the game to see if the shape can be changed easily. Same vertices, same texture mapping. Simply moving those vertices around a bit. Essentially, this is exactly how foals work. They use the same "base mesh" and texture mapping, they've just been reshaped a bit. So tonight I finally tried it. Behold: Hot blooded, Warm blooded (our default horse that I didn't change at all) and cold blooded horses in all of the colors:

If we do this I demand that their model changes based on their fat layers too. I want super fat boyes.

Only one foal born this morning, but he's nonetheless a very special little foal. A black silver! Born to HappyFancy (White) and EbonyBenny (Ebony Black) a son "HappyHill".

Finally! Seven new foals born since the update, today the first new color The one I wanted most, the black silver, Ladyhard, parents were brown mom and grey dad (one of those who were bugged into buckskin the first day but reverted back to grey later, thanks Lisabet!). Interesting that she was the first one I bred on update day, but six others gave birth before her, I was giving up hope lol.

+100 YES But cold blooded need more hair on their feet and a bushier type tail and longer fringes like proper cart horses. And should be slightly bigger too.

I'm actually kind of ok with the horse mesh and rig. Although admittedly I was a bit sad one time when I tried to make a pregnant looking version and realized that the belly simply did not have enough polys to expand in a nice rounded way. If you ask me, it's the player character meshes and rigs that dearly need a renovation. I hate how our characters are so rigid and unable to pose in fluid natural ways.

Those heavy horses should easily be able to carry a knight in full plate armour complete with a full set of weapons and tools, to ride out to defend their Kingdom and their honour! Of course once we have heavy horses - we will have to have.....jousting tournaments! Lance model anyone? Which knight will receive the lady's favour? I can see we are all going to need to purchase more deeds to keep all these extra horses! This post opens up many possibilities.

I did the best I could with the existing 3d mesh and texture mapping. So you can see the feet are "fluffier" and the tail is cropped, (which is common for draft horses). The thing is, that if we make a completely new mesh that goes full out with everything you describe, that means we need a new mesh, new textures, new texture mapping. This would mean that all the nice horse colors we have wouldn't work with it automatically. My solution is trying to work with our existing mesh and mapping so we could have BOTH new colors AND new shapes in a practical feasible way.

To offset the death tab, perhaps a welcome for new players fresh out of Golden Valley on that server they choose. A new player birth notice. Could be either a new pop-up tab like deaths or a different coloured text message in the freedom server chat for that server. Just a thought

I know we capped player God ascension, but but it's safe to say Malena has ascended to our new Demi Goddess! oh there is something that was just about to roll off my tongue out me mouth as a witty but saucy response nicedreams, but didn't want to have this post poof. who'd not want a nice donkey.

What inspires me? Well what inspires me is the creative freedom offers, in so many different aspects. The ability to change the world around you, bend it to your will or become a victim to the passage of time and fade away to nothing again. Or to play and develop your character in any way you wish, there is no right or wrong way. Just do it however you will most enjoy it. Then my greatest passion of creativity is making content around this game, whether it's on Youtube or on my Twitch channel. I love showing off this game to new people or sharing the game from my perspective with my viewers. There is no greater joy to me than being able to show people what Wurm Online is really about, the most successful way I've been able to come up with for this is via Timelapses. These are the easiest way to translate the appeal of Wurm and instead of saying "You know, I just spent 6 hours building the materials and putting together a simple house" you can actually show the process, how you shape the world and build whatever you imagination is populated with. This is what intrigues people and this is what I truly love and am inspired by is creating that intrigue.

+1 Yes, your idea has serious merit and is presented beautifully. Thanks so much for putting in all the hard work. Warm-bloods are created by cross-breeding cold and hot blooded animals to produce a more useful all rounder - I would like to see that ability using your models. One thing that I would love to see is the smaller 'native' breeds such as Shetland, Mountain, Moorland and Fell Ponies. Whilst these would be comical to ride(!) they would more truly represent the 'wild' ponies we would find out on the steppes - e.g Europe's heath and moors, the New Forest UK, and the steppes of Russia, and Mongolia. Thanks Malena!

It would be nice if there was an option to do forges and ovens with a short or tall chimney. I find it frustrating when you have a two story house and the chimney from your forge / oven on the lower floor sticks up into the room above. The tall chimney would be nice for a single story building so it could stick through the roof and create a nice effect , and the short chimney would be nice for a multistory house so it wouldn't invade higher floors.

Actually, we may be able to do the fluffy fetlocks (think that's the right bit of horse) as optional sub-meshes. That's how we do things like saddles, etc. From memory, I think the code will handle there not being the right sub-mesh automagically, so there may be some saving in effort only adding it where needed, but I have no idea how much work is needed on the graphics side - Saroman always makes it look easy, so I assume basically none ?

Love all the ideas here! It would make breeding considerably more complicated, but as a breeder I say why not?? Add more challenge, make breeding what you want require more forethought. One thing I've been really happy to see with the new colours is that I've got the challenge of building up good breeding stock again. It took me ages to be able to build a breeding population of the colours and traits I want, and doing that all again is great. ^-^ Also, +1 to floofy feets and lil ponehs!

+1 24-48h offdeed makes sense (and beats the option of carrying a bunch of tents which'd eventually litter the hell out of the landscape). Should be permanent on-deed for decoration's sake.

+++1 I guess we all have our own personal things in wurm we love and that move us or that we'd want expanded upon. This post really amped me up in a good way, i've long wanted draft horses, and that did get triggered into more thought after the factional fight stream discussion about traits and having different horses with different merits. Not only does the husbandry system need a rework in that the more skill you gain above 50 to get the prized 5speeds, there are increasing chances of not getting the wanted 5speed traits along with some others. something went wrong there. Moreover, a rework of the traits is more inline with how cooking changed from all grinding HFC into just making meals ie like the just 5speed trait matter into something more elaborate and versatile. I really really like the idea of having a speed horse with a graphically more svelte elongated leg trimmer appearance mean while a draft horse having a thick muscular oversized appearance. Beyond just appearances as you've suggested here, which i may add really excited me, there should be trade offs to having one over the other ie as wiolo mentioned, draft horse types (coldblooded)would be much stronger, carry more weight , ideal for pulling carts and wagons, harder to kill in combat, but compromise on speed, agility, terrain adaptation. The hot blooded would be faster, and more agile, handling slopes better and terrain changes yet be very sensative/affected by weight carrying capacity perhaps they are easier to kill in combat over the coldblood draft/war horse type. I so down for some of these pack mule porkers..hmm that reminds me of someone, but yah give me that butterball horse with the cropped tail, oak trunk neck, and anvil hooves for when i'm feeling grrrr or the more delicate hot blooded when feeling sasssy and prancy toe my pretty pony sparkly dust in the wind moments. You are a superstar!, Malena

horses in general need more polygons, +1 but i'd like to see a updated new horse rig as well as other creatures.

I've always loved this idea when people have requested it. So a big ol' +1 For me, I just want to be able to "park" my horse in a realistic way so it looks immersive instead of the horse just standing there with a saddle. Imagine building a tavern with a row of hitching posts outside for visitors to come and park their steeds while they come in for an ale.

I just wanted to add an image to explain what I meant about how one texture/one texture mapping can be used to work for all three shapes. It's because it's the exact same set of vertices in pretty much the same spots, simply shifted around a very small amount. As soon as you start adding new details (thus needing new vertices), it messes up the mapping of the texture, requiring a new texture. And that opens a whole new can of wurms. (see what I did there? ha!) The way I did it means we can enjoy variation without it causing big problems or complications or a huge amount of extra textures.
  27. 3 points
Oh you make such a good point about the negative qualities of each. I totally forgot about that. Very very good! Love it! As for changing the mesh to make more fluff. Again here's the thing I was trying to explain to Fairyshine. Any additional vertices to the mesh would then mean that the existing textures would not work as is. You see for the horses in the game. All colors, all ages (even foals) they all use one common mesh file layout. The foal mesh is shaped differently, but it still has the same vertices in the same places, just slightly adjusted. This means the textures can map onto it. All the color variation textures are mapped identically onto that one mesh. So if we change the mesh to have more fluff for instance, that means all horses in the game have fluff. If we make a new horse mesh that has extra vertices to support more detailed "fluff", this means that the existing textures will not work with it due to it requiring it being mapped differently. This means a different texture would need to be made for "fluff" horse separately. And to be able to support all of those colors we have in the game, it would mean a double amount of all the textures. Of course, this can be done technically, but is it worth it? We have to then consider whether we're willing to "spend" in regards to texture pack size on a whole second set of textures for horses, only to support a version that is slightly fluffier than what you see above. When we could instead be spending that space for completely new textures for completely new items in the game. Ya know? At the end of the day, I think we'd all love to have every little detail perfect in the game, but it's always a matter of considering practicalities.

+1, needs more FLUFF! Hot blooded horses should be worse in carts. more agile and nimble and better at climbing (As you recommended) maybe have slightly less carry weight due to having a nimble frame. And also faster up slopes. Warm blooded should be the balanced all round horse. Kind of the same it is now. And cold blooded should be powerful wagon/cart pullers and carry far FAR more weight, and maybe even have more body strength and reduced riding speed, and maybe be able to carry 2 people. You know, a power horse! They're huge! I'd love to see some nice huge plumes of hair for those cold blooded horses too, added to the mesh of the texture. Fluff!

1.) I am in love. 2.) The horses are cool too. You are spectacular, Malena! Amazing work! I think this would be such a valuable change to animal husbandry and horse mechanics. For something thrown together in one night of “moving vertices around a bit,” it’s just... Wow! You never cease to amaze me! +1, obviously. +1 million, if I could!

Everyone* is desperate for the new foal colours, with foals due in a few days - it's so exciting! What colours will they be? ....so I thought I would set up this thread so that everyone can post screenshots of their new foals when they are born (whatever colours they come out!) Whilst we are waiting for the new foals, feel free to post ANY cute images of foals (in game or real life) as we'd love to see them. ? Muse * [edit] except Mr Gary [/edit]

Surprised myself by instinctively being anti-this, but that's just me and my horse loving quirks (for instance I'd far rather ride uneven terrain on a Clydesdale than an Arabian). But if I can pretend I finally own an Akhal-teke, a Thoroughbred, and a Clydesdale, and none of them have to be jet black, and everyone else is excited, then what the hell. And yes, AH needs a serious overhaul. It should not take me longer than my lower AH alt to breed a 5 speed horse starting with wild stcok. My only remaining concern is what becomes of bison, especially my painfully bred 5 speeds, with Coldbloods in the game? Awesome work on the models, Malena, especially the heavy horse, and on the idea. +1 @Malena Highland ponies. Just saying.

+1 - it would be great if these ideas could be considered and implemented by the Devs.

Yes yes! combat too, because hot blooded's are generally faster in many situations they would also be weaker, and more hindered by bardings. While cold blooded's would have less of a speed penalty in bardings and on top of that would have higher DR (Because of their large body strength? or an increased natural armour that stacks with bardings, like a 25% resistance) Imagine a huge steed in a steel barding tanking damage. That would be cool. Maybe have them affected by wound movement penalty less. On top of that, hot blooded's should deal less damage in combat too, while cold blooded would hit as hard/harder than a unicorn. Hitting very hard to extremely hard. In PvP the hot blooded horses are the escape masters, while cold blooded are the one's you stay in combat with.

We already have 2 horse colors that do provide a 'speed' bonus, the ebony and molten. But I like your idea, it would mean tossing out the current and quite frustrating breeding system for something more simple. Gives people the option of having a top speed horse in there favorite color.

I believe that different horse shapes (not just colors) were something that the devs were exploring back in 2012, so it would be fabulous if this were to finally go ingame:

+1 I would quite like a chimney stack extension model - a bit like a stone tube in the same style as the chimney - that can be placed over the chimney stack on every level, however high your building. Perhaps these could be linked in some way so that the smoke only appears over the top one. Also - if snow and rain can be prevented from appearing indoors / below a roof, perhaps smoke can be prevented from displaying indoors / below a roof also. ?? || || || [☀️]

The old map used to show market towns in a different colour. I just fancied going out and exploring some markets and before heading off, was thinking it would be nice if: Deeds that are public markets (like Southport, and Delish) are a different colour or have a large market symbol on the community map. Independent merchant stalls or clusters of stalls also had a small symbol on the map. This might encourage folks to visit more of their neighbours' markets and stalls - if we just knew where they were. Thanks for considering!
