    Yes, I have done this with my kids who live in other states. The trickiest part is correctly forwarding the ports on the router and/or firewall. I did it once but it was confusing for me, and when Comcast did a forced router/modem upgrade on me, I really did not feel like doing it again. You can then password protect it so that only your friends are able to access. Don;t ask me to walk you through it though as I barely did it before and it's just too complicated for me. My daughters are both married to IT techs and frankly they tried to set up their own computers to act as the host, but couldn't manage. Steam forums are full of people who tried and gave up. Yet you will also find people telling you the 6 year old next door managed to set one up just fine and that it is JUST SO EASY. So give it a try, many have succeeded with no problems. It might well depend on your modem software whether it is easy of complicated. I probably downloaded and used the Wurm Dedicated Server which is a separate download from the server that comes with the game (under TOOLS in Steam Library) , although some say that is only needed if you use a separate computer from the one you play on, as the server. Depends on your system as far as resources. At the time, I had a 10 year old computer with an original Conroe Core 2 Duo E6700, 8800GTX, probably 4G ram, and a regular hard drive not SSD. This is my personal computer which I ran my client on and we also used as the server. We did not notice any particular lag but use a SMALL map if possible (1024x1024 or 2048x2048 custom maybe). You won't need a huge map if its just a few of you and bigger maps will just cause problems. Check the subforum for custom small maps if you do not feel up to inventing your own with the map generator tool.     Informative Errors Right now in Wurm there is a significant number of systems that do not give proper player feedback which can result in confusion for anyone who doesn't understand the intricacies of how things work. These suggestions are meant to help improve clarity by adjusting error messages to more specifically display why things aren't working. Horse Gear A new player to the game might not understand that horses need to be tamed, charmed, or branded in order to be equipped. They might try something like either of the below after creating their first set of horse gear: Notice the errors? You can't reach that. You are not allowed to do that. Why can't I reach it? Why can't I do that? A new player would be absolutely confused as to what they did wrong here. In many cases, that player would simply go to Wurmpedia and figure it out, but not everyone is that patient or dedicated to resolving issues. My suggestion is to change the messages to give more clarity of what went wrong: You can't take that. The (name of creature) must be your pet or branded to your village. You are not allowed to do that. The (name of creature) must be your pet or branded to your village. Something along those lines would solve this player confusion with extremely minimal effort. Highway System There's a google document describing how the highway system works. I assure you, not everyone has read it. While creating a new highway is somewhat reasonable in terms of understanding how it works, take a look when trying to add on to an existing highway: You don't even get an error. You just can't even plant the objects trying to expand it. Now, an experienced player will know that you need to replace the catseye in the road with a waystone. But a new player will just sit there completely confused about what they're doing wrong. My suggestion is simple: Allow there to be a "plant" option for waystones and catseyes in the road where they wouldn't work. Then, display an error message telling the player why it wont work. For example, trying to place the catseye next to the highway here would result in an error like: You cannot place a catseye here. It would create an intersection, which requires a waystone. If I were to try the waystone, it could tell me something like the following: Waystones must be planted within a deed or replaced on catseyes to create an intersection. It's not perfect, but it sure beats having no idea what went wrong. Enchants & Negating Effects This one is rather simple, and can be described in two lines, copied from my Spellcraft mod description: [21:01:38] The longsword is already enchanted with something that would negate the effect. [21:01:43] The longsword is already enchanted with Blessings of the Dark which would negate the effect of Wind of Ages. "Something that would negate the effect" tells the player nothing about what's going wrong. Someone who doesn't read the wiki would have no idea why their enchant wont apply. Corners Can't Be Modified When trying to flatten or level an area, sometimes this will happen: Some corners can't be modified. Why not? What's stopping it? Which corner is it? The following is more descriptive: The birch tree prevents a corner from being modified. The slate bricks prevents a corner from being modified. Either one of those is more effective than what's being displayed. Overall, clarity in error messages does nothing but good things for the game. It helps people learn what they're doing incorrectly and guides them towards solving the problem instead of leaving them feeling dumb and helpless.

    As the one who had to live with her through her 5 days of rage getting up the mountaintop, let me answer that for her: Day 1: 50 Deaths Day 2: 50 Deaths - nowhere near the mountaintop Day 3: 50 Deaths - 8 hours of playing, 8 hours of dying, 8 hours of torturing Yldrania Day 4: A sh*tload of deaths - 5 hours of playing, then ragequitting after dying just a few tiles away from the top Day 5: Some deaths - 17 hours of playing - Climbing up without any gear but a deed stake in a long, 13 hour single setting endeavour Why? - you may ask Because I challenged her to play Wurm and her response was: if I manage to climb on this mountain I will stick around.     I'd love to hear some sort of sound linked with trees and bushes. Birdsong is only linked to natural grass tiles now, right? It makes me sad how silent my orchards and cultivated deeds are. It feels weird, when in orchards, to be surrounded by trees ...and dead silence. I have even walked through silent wild forests where there aren't enough grass tiles to produce birdsong. There needs to be "something"...preferably birdsong, but I'll take wind through branches over the dead silence. Trees are not silent, even if there is no wildlife about. And they always draw birds...even in cities...

    After getting bored of my quiet little starter deed, I decided to take on a larger scale project in this game. I've picked a spot on the highest mountain I could find in Xan, spent 13 tedious hours getting up there and finally dropped my deed yesterday. Just look at that awesome view! P.S. I shall be using this thread as a progress update on the deed development and to showcase what I consider Elven in Wurm!

    Considering all the hate the Epic Cluster seems to receive, and people demanding that the cluster have something unique to it, which we are well past the mechanics of uniqueness (everyone now can get tomes, moonmetal, and the lot.) Why do we not just make it unique by making it simple? Why not just take what the game used to be, no moonmetal, tomes, valeri, default gods, etc. (meditation?) Make that the new server with the current armor changes, and balances people like of which can be picked and chosen. The goal being a more vanilla style of game play. This should appease everyone, a fresh map, fresh game, mixed with a refreshing change to what is considered the "end game" content. Let me know what you think, provide feedback, and feel free to criticize. EDIT: This can also be used as a great ground floor for new balance updates, such as the Dual Wielding that Xallo suggested, the clean slate nature encourages experimentation.     Since animal crates are worth 500 responses per month, update the community that lurks in the shadows or most commonly known as the discord pvp section and Skirmish threads. Is epic really being kept alive with zero future? Is a split pvp community better than 1 whole community? Is a new map coming? Armor changes coming to chaos? Are "Balanced Updates in Wurm PVP" really a feature these days stuck to 1 server?? Are Anti-Alt mechanics such as View distance from caves a Feature these days stuck to 1 server?? Road map?? A simple yet repeated line of SoonTM??? Player gods?? ANYBODY

    Not sure exactly how to fix this. But on the horse shoes wurmpedia page, it says "Can be made of any metal." Then, in the 'Skill and improvement' section it says..."Uses blacksmithing" and "improves like blacksmithing items". This apparently is true, unless it is made out of gold. In that case, it should say "Uses Jewelry smithing" and "Improves like Jewelry smithing" for gold horse shoes. I recently needed to improve some gold horse shoes, and it was jewelry smithing for sure. (not sure why it keeps red underlining my word 'smithing' here. I thought 'smithing' was a word.)     I think that's sadly one of the reason Epic died in the first place and why no one except maybe 10 players left want to play on Epic. Really you're making changes that 200 players want on freedom (or chaos) but won't get them, just for 10 players left on Epic. Why? What is the point? I get Epic was basically a beta testing ground for a lot of things, which didn't work, but at this point who's left there to actually enjoy/play/test/care about them? Sadly, I am not playing Wurm anymore. I don't like the direction Wurm is going. I will pay for upkeep and crap mostly because I care about my villagers, but won't renew my subcription, so yeah, sorry to say it by, I will just check the forums from time to time and see if there's any update in Wurm's game direction that will make it worth my time to play again. Been a fun ride, but here's hoping.

    And this isnt the only table you have to go look on wurmpedia or memorize, also mesages for prospecting could show numbers from wurmpedia right away, like you estimate there is beetween 2-3k ores left in the vein instead of you should start searching for another vein or something like that(pulled the numbers from random). Also vein ql could use numbers, at least in addition to message in brackest like: It's of very good ql(70-90ql). Don't know exact numbers again, i hope you are the point by now why it would be easier to be ingame. Also pendulum messages in number of tiles, etc.

    Unfortunately I have to say that Yldrania is quite right. It took me a long time to scout the mountain properly. There was a very steep slope and I had to create a few tiles via surface mining to stand on and regain stamina. But in the end it worked and I got mountain goat way before I reached the top. If you'd like, I can help you ascend any mountain you'd like to deed. I'd love to be able to be of assistance.

    A lot of talk about "Mine Doors Closing" off deed, but these doors need to be at least 10x weaker if that's the case and Log off timers increased with enemy in local to 60 minutes. Perhaps making those doors if enemy have stepped through them in the last 15 minutes a lot weaker for 30 minutes. This would be a fair balance. Would stop any off deed door being easy to bash but also any mine door being used to hop, being too hard to bash. Fair.

It's strange, as I've also had scorpions and hell scorpions for years, and I've never had a problem with bashing, even when they aren't fed. I guess I've just been lucky. And Finndar, don't worry about the dead one; as you said, you didn't know. My female was the branded one, so that's the only one I really need to breed myself some more on Exo once animal crates come in

    The information has been out there. After the recent changes we made to PvP, our focus is on other projects such as the new UI and a new account system. Bumping posts for the sake of hoping for a different answer isn't really helping anyone. When we are able to make PvP a main focus again I'm sure a post will be made.

    so is this a definite no to armor balances on chaos just because it might affect some dude without a real income attempting to sell armor in a game to pay for his childs diapers? just let me know so i can cash out and quit now. Epic is beyond repair (or at least beyond what the devs are willing to do to it) and im tired of being on Chaos watching people not want to go 1 hop from their deed because the gear required to pvp costs 90euro minimum

    I think we're getting close to everything being dyeable, though I do want a bright green beard. Seriously though, there's been a fair few PvP centric updates and changes, and I know there's more desired, and there's more we're working on. There's a lot more balancing and planning needed for PvP updates, and we work on getting as much information and as close to release before raising them to avoid certain issues (like creature crates). When they're at a stage to test and discuss balance we'll be sharing the info, but these things take time. As for the armour changes, the great thing about Epic is we can really change things up, and impact which armours are widely used without affecting others such as freedom, Chaos doesn't have that luxury, and thus things have to be balanced across both, which is what leads to issues such as both sides feeling a split is necessary. We explained this when the armour changes went live, and have stated this several times. There may be pieces we can carry across, but most of those changes are on epic because they don't impact freedom. I'm not 100% sure if you're referring to PvP ONLY updates, or updates that affect PvP too, since there's multiple of both that have come out (such as the PvP affinity rework last patch) But if there are specific ideas beyond "armour changes to chaos" and "new map" feel free to suggest them and discuss as a community the benefits and drawbacks of these suggestions. the forums are your place to work together for the benefit of all, so try to avoid attacking one another simply because you disagree, leave that for the battlefield.

    Just trying this out for the first time. Was using an older version before, with no problems except that there was no river option. When I try to drop dirt, I get the following error, every time, and can't proceed: Does anyone know what's happening? EDIT -- I found the answer. I was trying to use this from my desktop. Once I put it into a folder, it started working fine.

    How the heck is 25,000 filled pans even possible! (Perhaps I'm thinking about this incorrectly, but I imagine you dragging and dropping 25,000 corn, then 25,000 filets....)
