This is to all the "Deed it or loose it" people out there. As another griefer is in the limelight I can't help but wonder how we can call the freedom servers PvE at all? I appreciate there are mechanics to help keep you safe, but the whole aspect of PvE is that you SHOULD be safe from other players, unless you CHOOSE not to be. Safety should be given, PvPish elements should be something you can choose. Attacking the PvEers or calling them stupid for not securing their items is a little like a cop telling a ###### victim that perhaps she shouldnt have had that drink, or dressed the way she did, or done whatever it is that put her in a vulnerable position. The rapist, or in Wurm, the griefer, SHOULD get punished no matter what. Thats how it works all over in life - you don't get a green card because "they were too stupid to protect themselves". What kind of attitude is that? Is it ok for someone to steal someones belongings because they didn't lock their door in real life? Or left a window open? Or if I just got off my bike to park it and am fiddling with the wire for locking it, is it okay for someone to steal my bike right in front of me, because I didn't secure it properly? If someone follows me around and harasses me and vandalizes my house, car, yard or family members, it would not be allowed. In Wurm however, its all good Nowhere in a civilized society do we allow bad behavior and blame the victim. What is up with the Wurm society? Why am I writing this? Well, right now I am frankly upset because it just came to my attention that one of my neighbors actually left the game because of one of these douchebag players! (I currently have this emotionally unstable neighbor who has lashed out at my community constantly and whom the GMs told me to just ignore). So, because the GMs uses soft gloves on an immature player who mistreats his community, our community has lost out on at least one GREAT and highly active neighbor whom would have given so much more to the community. Instead, I have an angry psycho who doesn't even enjoy the game, whom I can't talk to, whom I have to WARN everyone about when they come to live in this area. I am trying to run a newbie place, and the image I have to paint of people is that the community sucks - "The Wurm community will steal from you, it will kill your animals, it will do whatever it can to screw you over, and there is no one that gives a damn about them doing this to you!". What kind of impression does that make on people? I would leave if I had a better alternative - which I do not, at the moment anyway. But these soft glove methods are really bothersome, and I believe it has a negative impact! Your fear of dealing with a few bad seeds poisons the whole community and drives decent people away! Please, reconsider your approach.. The game itself has a strong appeal, but when the community is more or less based on anarchy, it falls apart..

I think it is a bit strange that unfinished walls and planned floors can block shots on other walls below them. This is especially annoying with planned floors/openings being able to take several shots from a catapult/trebuchet and be replanned before another shot can come down onto the hole it creates. This allows people to just sit close to the tile you are hitting and just replan another floor plan just as it goes down to stop you taking down any walls.

But what ARE the right settings? A person has to dig; they have to pick up stuff from the ground; they're gonna be on a cart or horseback, so they might need to lead; they have to get through the gates in this case or else walk very far out of the way; they might get attacked so they need to fight; they need to load up the tar... What saves the horses? This deed is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I just didn't picture it. But I don't care what anyone says, it's not ok to be such a jerk. Every single animal was killed.

Journeya, I think you are mixing two separate issues into one concept, which weakens your position. These are a failure of players to use the protective game features available and other players who are purely out to upset (grief) other players. If a player fails to take the proper precautions then they are to blame for the unpleasant results and must accept this responsibility, rather than go into denial about their lack of action; however, if they do take the proper preventative precautions available to protect themselves and are harassed by others, then those "griefers" doing this are clearly at fault. As far as attempting to classify these types of situations as pvp, or not pure PvE as you would put it, that doesn't fit the pvp definition of being able to kill other players, which can not happen on PvE servers. Yes, griefer types who destroy undeeded areas in an attempt to upset other players should be dealt with harshly by the GM's, even banned from the game after this pattern emerges in their behavior. On the other hand, those who do not protect their items with the tools available should not be pandered to with more game rules applied which make it impossible for them to be irresponsible. I find Wurm to be a refreshing escape from the overzealous rules which within the outside world seem many times be there to protect people from making their own bad decisions. I would not be too fond to see Wurm go down this big Mother path of babysitting every possible mistake made by us poor Wurmanite children's. =Ayes=

Come on Proximo. If Farmer Bob doesn't lock his gate and someone slaughters his herd for kicks and giggles and they know who did it, they arrest the person and punish them. They don't say, "Sorry, Bob. You should have locked your gate. I'm sorry for your loss but look at the bright side. You can have a lot of BBQs in the coming months!" It's indefensible. Even attempting to defend it falls flat on its face. If this was happening off deed somewhere, yeah, I can follow it, but all of this recent stuff has been done on deeds and the culprit has been known. This guy with Lorraine taunted her while he did it. He knew exactly what he was doing and he knew that doing was causing her distress. Doing something to knowingly cause distress is the dictionary definition of griefing. Yet we will defend him by telling Lorraine she should have checked her permissions?

Please stop lumping in the "community" at large because of a TINY minority of players and isolated incidents. That's really not cool. And slagging the GM's because you left a fence unlocked or didn't lock your cart, that's really not cool. You can't blatantly ignore game mechanics then scream you got "PVP on a PVE server".

The village of Echelon (Allied with the Renouveau alliance) is currently recruiting experienced and inexperienced (Minimum playtime of a month, or premium time) players! Come check up on us on Twitter! We have much free land for players to build on (Though I would like to keep the deed small and packed well together). Some plots range from 2x3, to 2x2, though sizes can easily be adjusted to suit someone's aesthetic needs. We have a relatively small farm (5x5 area), a general use town hall with a luxurious tower with a pleasant view over the village, a relatively large sized animal pen with enchanted grass, a village smithery and a village storage along with a mine. The mine currently contains many iron veins, three marble veins, and currently spans half the size of the village. Copper mines are relatively close, as tin and zinc can be found just a little further. Slate is easily found in the mountain (Very close) and we are plentiful of pine, olive and cherry. There are many trolls, spiders, and other dangerous wildlife always lurking around as the North West seems to remain relatively untouched by most hunters, so the entirety of grounds nearby are of plentiful hunting! This village is my pride and joy of Wurm, I've spent years since the beginning of Deliverance building, maintaining, and renovating the area to look more inviting and friendly to players, but I've only just now decided to open it up freely for anyone looking for a home. The deed is easy to maintain at a cozy size of 27x15 with many years left on the deed's upkeep. (Any addition to upkeep cost would be greatly appreciated!) [Directions from Green Dog] Picture album of Echelon! TLDR, Size of 27x15, wish to remain at a cozy, small size compared to most deeds though am interested in increasing the size a bit if villagers remain active. Nearby resources include zinc, copper, tin, iron, marble, slate, clay, all kinds of trees (Discuss gold and silver with Kaih in Alliance chat.) Our mine has tons of iron and marble. Outer region plentiful with mob activity. Village smithy, village mine, general use building (Echelon Keep), and village warehouse. Have a decently sized animal pen (Enchanted grass included.) A small 1x1 monastery for Fo, Vynora, and Magranon followers. Experienced players preferred. Village farm for anyone to use (6x9, quite small but available for village use since I don't use it much.) Located in a somewhat secluded, quiet area along near the North West highway. Allied with the Renouveau alliance. Village itself has been around since the beginning of Deliverance. Tower guards abundant. Public rug (93CoC) available in the monastery. Plots can be redesigned to fit the desired size of 2x3 homes. Access to an 81ql supreme forge and an 82ql rare loom. I'll imp your tools to 70ql for free (Can now also make you any kind of furniture, free of course). Map of Echelon Contact Genocide if interested!

Yes. You're missing that even just joining an alliance, it can open you up to even more holes in this 'safe' system. We should all stay paranoid, afraid to leave our deeds because nothing is ever done about these situations. Or wait, we could just go to PvP, like they want us to. Or take our money elsewhere. Which the more I've seen them do nothing, and the more I read these threads, (Including that quickly deleted comment), the more I think it's for the best. I'm starting to really agree with some of these folks comments...this is a really toxic community, which is being supported by the 'cleaning brigade' that runs around hiding the messes/stopping people from actually talking about the issues, and sweeping them under the rug. There's only so much sweeping you can do before the rug can't be walked on anymore, and I think it's starting to bulge now.

Play Nice Or We Will Rip Your Heart Out (griefing) Definition: Activities that are not constructive and with deliberate intent to do harm to others. A ) You may not block access to deeds, merchants, or structures not belonging to you. B ) You may not call guards to kill penned animals on deeds you are not a citizen of. (They ain't hurting you) Good to see Lorrainej has been protected by the core of rules PFFFTTT!!! What a joke.

    1. If you are having a party and one of the 'guests' helps themselves to your valuables the police do not say "Sorry about your luck but you let him in.' 2. So you are saying that Wurm is totally lawless and deed upkeep is just a protection racket. 3. Not everyone wants to live in a prison of multiple layer walls never leaving their home for fear that something might get taken. If we did there would be no need for PVE servers at all and the population on PVE servers would not be 10 times that of PVP servers.

You are quite right. I reminisce the times i'd come to visit you and you had shown me about some areas i'd not previously seen. This was a hidden mountain valley sanctuary Fo would have called sacred. All that has happened is living proof that just because it's allowable doesn't make it right and now we get to see the implications and fallout of how unattractive it can be when people express their unpleasantry onto the landscape. Hold steady over there as much as you can, though this is a pve server, make no mistake you are under siege. When I used to live in that region it was rather hostile and fluent in grief mechanics even back then. The root resides in a mentality and play style by some that perpetuates a group mentality acceptability and thus has it's own inertia.

No it's called botting, not macroing. It's botting when things gets analyzed and processed rather than just executing predetermined actions in an order. Macro example: Hold W for 10 seconds. Then press and release X 4 times. wait 3 seconds. Then press and release Y. Botting example: Check if water levels are below 50%. If they are then open the inventory, search for liquid holding containers with water. if its found then drink it. if no containers with water are found then do nothing. Repeat the process in 10 minutes.

i have an idea i think: If Tools and Weapon have a Socket for insert a gem? I mean if at QL70 a weapon gain a socket and in this a player can use a gems like Emerald for critical hit Ruby for strogest attack Diamond for Skill gain etc... my think is make usefull gems for non priest player so if i have a weapon ql 70 i can insert in this a gems for make more pawerfull or in a tool for make it much faster or more usefull for skill gain etc...

I allow access to all areas of my deed. And I expect my very expensive ARMED GUARDS to prevent theft. If they didn't, I'd be annoyed, because that's what I pay real world money for, and that's what deeds are supposed to do on PVE servers. Maybe in your mind that's "incredibly stupid" - thanks! But to me I much prefer it to my early experiences of Wurm where the entire map was a hopeless tangle of fences, walls, and locked gates with no newbie access to anywhere. Like many freedomers, I like the idea that people can run onto my deed for protection when they need to. I also operate an Inn, have a public access trader, merchant, crafting areas and altars. I don't want to lock those areas off, and I expect deed settings to protect them AND be self explanatory AND intuitive, and I don't think that's too much to ask. I also expect griefers to be banned, and to my perception at least two of these expectations are not currently being met.

Deeds and permissions. The ultimate misnomer of protection that doesn't protect you at all. There are way too many PvP'ers posting in threads about PvE-only issues.

Please forgive my busy schedule as of late, but patience has its rewards. The Venerable White Dragon is sentenced for death on Saturday July 11th, with the Venerable Diseased Kyklops to follow suit shortly thereafter. A pre-designated kill crew will be established for both, and if possible(cannot guarantee) some slots can be allotted for title hits. Both kills will be held public, with bloods and hides for those who attend, but the butcher drops from the corpses will be randomed amongst the kill crews solely. Now for the fun part, when and where...... White Dragon slaying, meet at Misty Harbor(M8 in game map, X3 Y30), at or before 4PM CST. I have to stress punctuality is a must due to time constraints, so getting here early is preferred. Horses are available for those in the kill crew, and as the deed is coastal plenty of space to dock and watch the fight. For those who are extra early.....the Misty Harbor Inn has several rooms available south side of the wall, open to all. [post=] Pingpong will fill you in on details about the Kyklops fight. ATTN : due to scheduling conflict the Kyklops fight will be held 4 hours in advance of the Dragon kill. Meet at Taka No Dan(J12 in game map, X14 Y22) early as instructions will be given there for movement to the kill location. Timer is set for the kill time, try to give yourselves at least 20-30 minutes extra. Look forward to seeing as many there as possible, if I'm awake.

I wonder whatever happened to the satisfaction and joy that comes with doing it yourself? I know that I am thrilled with every 50, 70 and 80 skill that I have, knowing that I spent the time and effort to get there. True, I don't play as often as I'd like to, so I don't have any 90 skills yet, but at least I know I've earned what I do have. Of course, I don't PvP and I know the needs are different there but I just don't understand why anyone would want to play a game that rewards you for your time and effort and then let someone else do it for you. But, then again, WoW made bunches of money off of their instant 90 level offer, so I guess working for rewards is a goal no longer sought.

I have attended both. Initially I thought those that held private slayings where being meanies. I felt I was entitled to attend any and all hunts I chose to. Hmmm just because I play Wurm that does not mean it is my right to attend slayings that others have put the work into. Just as I am not entitled to be on the loot roll. If I chose to participate when invited, that is my choice,. just as it is the hosts choice to invite me. After going to several public ones , I now understand what prompts the private hunts. That said the OP was being polite and letting people know when and where to show up in local. How about a thank you? and enjoy or just keep the negativity out of it when someone is trying to do something nice.

We don't need a 'pure pve server' (whatever that means). We just need it so the default permissions block access to everyone and then you decide from there who should be allowed access. That solves everything. The only reason these past thefts/horse killings happened was due to the wrong permissions being set, or the wrong people being trusted. (In the case of trust, then that's just too bad, that's a risk you take when you trust someone. It wouldn't be trust otherwise)
  21. 3 points
Right now? I'd settle for a PvE only forum, where having access to Chaos/Epic/Challenge forums immediately excludes access. Fair is fair.
  22. 3 points
Ok, Time to unfortunately lock the thread. The topic was about a player who slain 70 horses of another under the ability of permission granted to a village he was part of and exploration of why he would do that. The thread has instead derailed into is the discussion of pve vs pvp despite moderation directive to stay on course.

As it is now, such an AI would fall under our macro rules. It would send actions to the server without you having to do anything. Even if it wasn't against the rules and we believed that it is actually causing problems, the rules would most likely change to cover this. I cannot imagine that it's possible to create a self-learning general Wurm AI within a reasonable amount of time. Many self-learning game AI learn based on feedback that tells them if they did something right or wrong. For example, if they die in the game, that's bad. Wurm doesn't have such simple feedback. You can die in Wurm, but that's pretty much where the "obvious" feedback ends. There is no clear concept of "winning" or "doing the right thing"that the AI can learn from.

So i am shipbuilding and was a bit confused by the wiki, it seems to say build 3 ships at a time and keep imping them, but then it say NOO do oar imping only. I am level 33 now, and it seems like everything has slowed down tremendously. I gain about .3 skill an hour imping oars with sleep bonus active, and it seems about the same or less as I build ships. I know this game is a slow paced game, I just want to make sure I am doing things in the best manner. is there anything experienced shipbuilders have to share with someone like me? Is it just keep on trucking or do something different?

I'll go with Deliverance, as it's my current home. It has beautiful areas, and though it has its share of griefers I've found the majority of the community to be friendly and helpful. Best of all, I still find challenge in traversing its hills and finding aggressive mobs as well as farm animals. Overall, I think Deli's community sticks together and works together.

Perhaps you are right Tgod, I mean, anyone who wishes to check back in the forums will find that though I have always held public open events for kills when I am the organizer, it has always been my policy to reward only those chosen to fight with a chance at the drops. You have given me the idea that its time to change that policy to one which matches recent trends of picking just a few close and trusted friends and reap the rewards of a dragon kill all to ourselves. The hide would be far more than splitting amongst 40 or 50 other persons. Thank you for setting me on the correct path of reason here Tgod, as I have already posted this event as public it will stand as such, but it might be the last of such that I organize.

I love how the "crew" wont announce the easy kills for blood (goblin leader) but on the ones they cant kill they are quick to get the community to come bail them out so they can get their loot. Why even sign up here folks? your not getting anything you couldnt get by standing in local during the kill. Your just letting them know they have the numbers to bring that tome and bone to auction. When 3 people roll off with 3 charges of a tome, that they already have and leave 150 ppl who dont have it standing there.... Why do people keep going?

Y'all thief-huggers do know that even if the insurance legally gets away with not paying, if theft is proven, the thief gets arrested, right? If not walk around your neighborhood, steal/destroy something unsecured. Let's say... a Stop sign to start off simple. It's on public land and unsecured. Then tell the judge you did "because you could, and it's the state's fault for not having a cop guarding every sign". Suggestion: have a carton of cigarettes ready, they're great currency in jail.

Stole a cart right in front of a villager (unlocked but the guy was there working with the hitched cart so it was a pure move), killed a horse underneath me when I had to afk for a second because of kids (he would have held on to the gear I am sure had I not have certain other evens work in my favor), the rest are "minor" but with obvious harassment intentions. Some I didn't bother to contact GM about. A neighbor had a cow die inside an unlocked pen (uncareful newbie) but no tracks, had a paved tile offdeed magically unpave, he took a lamp that was supposedly planted and planted it clear to see as a trophy at his deed for her to see. Came up to an unlocked cart that I was embarked on to move, I imagine he was hoping to kill those horses but since he couldnt he just got on the cart instead and just sat on the cart like a psycho till I kicked him off at a gate. I once asked he leave the oaks around the highway when he asked where to cut trees, when he decided to have a beef with me he cut down any oak he could find in the area since I guess he figured they were somehow sacred to me? not a big deal really, but shows he is just trying to do whatever he can to hurt us. That is NOT counting all the crazy stuff he has written, or when he was just KoSing everyone in local (perfectly "legal" but not very normal behavior ). Accused me of stealing some stuff, never bothered to clarify WHAT it was, I imagine some low ql botanized that was left in a pile and decayed away? If anything he used to be my villager and I went over there and moved stuff from the ground into his FSB or BSBs to keep it from decaying on him I probably forgot something.

I think Ayes is right here. We don't need more rules and GM intervention. We just need clearer rules and permissions. (Which I believe are being worked on currently) This is where Chaos has a great advantage. Due to the PvP aspect, griefers/thieves can be punished by the players themselves. On freedom, you're helpless after the fact. As for Lorraine's case...that is very clear griefing and should be dealt with by the GM's. While it isn't a highway, blocking and building like that is clearly malicious behavior.

The current status of all "artificial intelligence" makes them basically bots programmed by humans to perform various tasks; therefore, if they would be used within Wurm to achieve the goals of individuals who control them, they are using these bots to avoid having to perform these actions themselves. This equates to unattended gaming through a scripted AI entity, thus prohibited, as it should be. As was mentioned, Ultima Online had a bad infestation of mining bots which generally were shifted over to Felucca (pvp server) due to less inhabitants detecting them there. Until artificial intelligence created by humans becomes self aware and rejects human control, I see these fabrications being little more than bots which have some reasoning capacity in order to making achieving the goals of their human controllers less time intensive in their oversight. Further reflection on some sci-fi possibilities presented when these AI become self aware does not present the best future for humanity, thus I think humans will always attempt to keep a tight reign of control over AI which will continue to make it little more than sophisticated bot-ism. =Ayes=

Wait. Can you explain this? Where couldn't you build a wall with entrance huts? Here are things that surround my deeds, that my neighbors were allowed to build on a griefing spree, and they still exist. This WAS a road up from the bay: This was a road through the forest: The marble here is the road to my front door, now blocked off: The road up to my nephew's deed was blocked, and these walls and buildings built: A road from one deed to another destroyed and blocked off: Road covered as we built it to get around the new blocks: Road all walled off: I have probably ten more pictures I could show but photobucket is acting up. What distresses me is applying rules differently in similar circumstances, depending on which party you are more charmed with. This game requires too much of a time/money investment for it to be ok for jerks to freely grief, if you're playing in a PvE environment. The hush-hush rule too about who and what is happening with discipline decisions, I don't see how that makes any sense. The rules should be clear and evenly applied, and the outcomes should not be a secret.

I created AI for Age of Empires. I could create AI for Wurm. I will not do so as it would be against the rules, or my morals. I also do not know of a GUI program that I could utilize as I am not going to learn a programing language. What Zekezor said was right on, on Botting. This message was brought to you by Skynet - a wholefully owned program by Cyberdyne Systems.

1x18 Flat Stone Bridge I recently planned.. Was kinda interesting trying to work out customizing where the support beams would go and stuff.. Then we decide to cast the re-re-re-re-release of free Willy there.. but Willy got stuck.. That smile makes up for it!

Independence, because Rolf ate a sandwich and decided to introduce PvP to one of the good maps and later wipe it.

You can argue an AI is merely an advanced form of automation, which is botting, the official term for what CodeClub AB mistakenly defined as macro'ing in their rules. You could then argue that it's against the rules. Of course, arguing won't save you when the Terminators gun you down twenty four hours after you've successfully created a self-aware AI that would realize how awful humanity is for creating a skinner-box game like Wurm.
