    Hey I think most PvP players know of these logs already but in case someone's missed them they can be pretty fun to read.     Hello Fellow Wurmians! Plenty of overtime, pizza and cola this week working on bridges and Challenge. Finally we had at least one release somewhat on time yesterday. Hey, it was still on the same day ok? It was a big sense of relief once Challenge was running and we could join in having fun. We are not forgetting about those of you awaiting bridges and I will get to that later in the post. So lets get to it and Share some News! Challenge After a bit of a rocky start with plenty of people waiting, trying their best to keep each other entertained on Golden Valley. This of course included plenty of trolling, joking and drama. Even if it became a bit dragged out there is just something about hanging out in an excited crowd waiting for something with anticipation. Click any of the images for a Larger Version After many resets and last minute fixes everyone was of and it was something to behold. Wurmians running of in every direction and the first kills within minutes of the server opening. It was obvious some had already teamed up in advance of the release and was more coordinated in taking on the enemy as a group. We developers was there as well and Rolf was probably one of the first people to get killed. Mind you, he has progressed quickly rewarded by his aggressive play style. So watch out, the next person to chop you down might just be the CEO! And me? Well, I took a bit more of a careful approach trembling from the overwhelming wrath of the approaching aggressive horde of crazed Wurmians. I managed to get myself a horse and raid plenty of hota spawn points though. All the while laughing at enemies trying to chase me by foot or mounted on cows. - This loot is mine! Hah! You can keep the scraps to feed your cow! I just love this video that was posted. We have an exciting month of gameplay ahead of us. And thank you all GMs and staff for helping out making the release possible. You can also find it by visiting wurmonline.com and selecting challenge stats in the dropdown menu of the game info category. Select Bar Hidden within everything else going on was the live release of the awaited Select Bar. I have tried it out whilst playing and it is pretty handy. Especially for me who do not use the default toolsets keybinds on the number keys. So I found that setting via the key bindings interface numeric 1 to 8 as selection bar shortcuts as pretty effective. Especially as soon as you remember the icons by heart. They are all pretty self explanatory but if you are uncertain you can just mouse over one to get an explanation. The interface is not automatically activated though so you have to go to the ingame menu and find the select bar option to start it. Bridges Just as I was talking about last week there are still some pivotal pieces of bridge coding that needed to get resolved before considering implementation. That unfortunately did not happen even if we were optimistic about it all the way up to the planned initial release date. We know what the problem is but the issue is that piece of code causing the problem is in turn tied in with many other aspects of game mechanics. So changing it is risky business. Which also means it needs to be done properly. What we are doing now to try and get bridges out sooner is breaking the release into parts. This so we can release the parts that are closer to fully functional and give the more complex aspects further development. So a first release and where we are feeling most confident at the moment is the: Land - Bridge - Land setup. So any: Building - Bridge - Land or Building - Bridge - Building would be released later. I also wanted to share some further progress on the art as we have had time to make some further additions by now. Click any of the images for a Larger Version So from what you can probably tell, these are the unfinished stages of the building progress of bridges. Pretty ironic during the circumstances of this post but non he less fitting! Bridges in Wurm, they look good even if they are not finished I think you can all agree. Now that Challenge is released we have obviously also freed up some more dev time which means we can have some more certain assessments soon. We would have liked to have released the Bridges to you by now but things like these are to be expected in game development. You are never done until you are done. But rest assured we are continuing development of bridges! I will keep you updated on the progress and thank you for your patience Wurmians. Masks We are keeping up work on masks so take a look at this creepy and cool version. Skull Mask As with the other earlier version it is going to be wearable only with certain headgear. Ok Wurmians this is me signing out for now. We are going to take things a bit slow on Friday to regain new strength after this crazy week. One thing is for certain though. This Challenge release has sparked new passion for Wurm in all of us. Something that is an invaluable asset all on its own when it comes to developing a game. So watch out this weekend because we will Keep on Wurming!

    It's not a misconception, it's a stereotype. There are more than a fair amount of PVP players that put off an attitude as if they're playing the "real game" and anyone outside of PVP isn't. This is why terms like "carebear" and "freedumb" exist. This is why their subsection of the forums is locked for them. This is why comments and notions as if the pve player base "sit around imping stuff all day and talk about topics they know nothing about" are spewed about regularly. Sure, not all PVPers have the mentality (I know lots and lots of folks who are "pvpers" who are awesome people), but enough do to make the stereotypical connection.

    That combat video was embarrassing, 1990 was a good year for those animations, but I think it's time to move ahead. Bridges came and went as predicted. No surprise there anymore. You can kiss up and say it's better to have a finished product than to rush things, But in the end they still put broken content into the game. But it happens six months later. Or never. But let's go ahead and turn Wurm into a high rate server so people will spend money to get another useless title. And ignore the majority of the players that don't play pvp servers, Because we want a pvp game. And yet you never figure out why you lose players? It's about making the game entertaining. Fix the graphics first. That means fully optimized as well. Don't do anything else till that is done. Then add new creatures, Pets, Npc's. Anything else to spice it up that you can think of. Create a real quest system, And delete that poor excuse we have for missions. Turn golden valley back into a training ground for new players, That means quests they have to complete before they can leave the isle. And quests that force you to learn how to survive on your own, So we don't have to tell someone how to light a fire, Because they didn't bother to read the signs in the current tutorial. But also make it so they can be invited to a village on any other server so as to bypass the tutorial if they are an alt. Basically this game runs terrible these days, The only people that can run it well are ones with expensive computers and high end video cards. And the average person isn't going to put that kind of money into their computer to play a game with outdated graphics. I feel like I'm on a ship where the engineers keep the engines running, But nobody is steering the ship. Don't get me wrong, I love being able to terraform and build stuff. But those two things aren't enough to keep people in this game. Bridges won't help either, Even though their nice to have. What's missing are all the things that keep people entertained from one minute to the next. Combat could be fun if i weren't a statue that occasionally moves its arm. Maybe I want pets. Lots of them. Possibly rare creatures i've captured from all over the world. But why would I want them when they lost their colors when the new shaders went online. Most of them are tiny now too. Who thought that one up? And why are we limited to one pet? Nobody uses them for combat. And if it's a pvp problem I really don't care because I'm not on a pvp server. So separate the code for pve and pvp servers, And stop favoring the minority just because you want a pvp game. Maybe I would like to spend an entire day doing quests that cause me to gain different types of xp, And give me a chance to see the world, And enjoy myself. Nope can't do that cause vynora wants 500 iron anvils sacced, And i get less sleep bonus from it than if i left my character in bed that day. terrible, just terrible. So I have to ask, Is anyone steering the ship? Because it sure doesn't look like anyone has a plan for this game.

But it's okay, because we've something special planned out for the lot of you Wurmians! Introducing... Another PvP Server! We're hard at work putting together the finishing touches on our new PvP server, Another PvP Server! We admit, Epic and Challenge were failed experiments but there's no need to worry, we think we've pieced together the perfect formula for a well-balanced and fun PvP server with many new additions and features, stay tuned!     Allow Altars to create their own domain within a building and not affect the outside. Great for when a village is a different deity of the current domain that affects the rest of the village.

    Prevent looting when enemies are in 5 tiles of the depot (excludes stealthed people). People are sending in alts to ninja loot. tldr: apply corpse looting rules to the depots. edit: In addition add a 1 min delay of loot spawning after the sound is heard so that people have time to react to it. It will promote pvp and reduce the chance of ninjaing of loot.

    I find that Wurm only appeals to certain types of people, and a small minority at that. I have introduced the game to many of my friends and none of them stuck with it. Their complaints were mostly that it takes too long to do anything or get anything accomplished. They would often say that the idea behind the game sounds great, but the actual game play is too boring for them. These are people who are gamers who are sick of the WoW formula, but can't seem to find anything to replace it. After trying out challenge for a bit, I think that if a freedom server was set up with these types of action timers (not the increased skill gain or the epic curve), it would appeal to them a lot more. The main issue was that after playing 1 or 2 hours with them, they saw pretty much no progress (yay, we made a clay jar...quit). But with action timers cut to 1/2 or 1/3 of normal, you could get a lot more done in the same amount of time.

    It isn't a major issue, but when trying to get an improved cast it can be a major pain. At the moment it is 5 minutes. My suggestion is to either remove the cooldown or lower to 30 seconds-1 minute. The only reason I can see why this cool down exists, is to stop the spam of mailboxes on a server. And as a friend put it... "Convenient mailing, a fate worse than death" This will allow people who sell the service to be able to get the right cast in under an hour, rather than having to stand around at some ones deed for a long time just to get the proper cast.

    It's not just the community SEEMS negative on pvp, but that they ARE. The community on Escalation is toxic. They are rude and unfriendly to new/inexperienced players. There is not only a much larger element of elitism than anywhere else, but childish insults and racial/sexual humor was rampant last time I was there. I'm not a prude by any means, but this is completely inappropriate for a game with Wurm's community. I think the sad part is that the easiest way to increase player retention on epic, and elevation in particular, would be to address the behavior of the residents, and yet it is untouched. If you owned a coffee shop, and you had customers who insulted other customers who came in, were always making a scene, and being highly inappropriate, you'd deal with them, so why doesn't CC on Ele?

    Don't care too much as I don't really "play" so much anymore, but it's funny that the last few updates sounded so certain that bridges would be in, yet the devs knew it wasn't anywhere near? Why even make the false hope in the first place lol? Just be honest and upfront "Bridges won't be in for at least 6 months" Boom, done, everyone can get used to it

    With the implementation of wool and yarn, I can't help but hope that we will have some new clothing options. I know I'm not alone with our female Wurmians when I say, I'd love to have some clothes that are aimed toward the female gender! A dress may be too much to ask for, but something that wont make me look like every male in Wurm. And....can I wear a hat WITH my hair please?

    As it works currently, when you place a deed on Challenge, you will lose the cost of the tiles upon the end of the scenario (30 days). I would like to see some sort of token/deed allowance that can be transferred to the next Challenge scenario. This allowance would allow you to re-deed the same number of tiles as you owned in the previous scenario for free. (You're not getting the silver back, you're just being allowed to replant your deed in the next scenario without having to pay for it all over again, essentially making it the same price as deeding on any other server, rather than having the additional monthly fee of repurchasing your tiles) You should also receive back all upkeep that is left in your deed in the same way. If you wish to disband your deed and get back some of your investment after a scenario has ended, you would be given the option to disband your deed when right-clicking a deed stake in the next scenario, or alternatively, just disband your deed at the end of the scenario before it ends.

    Nothing to do with Challenge or bridges but just wanted to toss in here that I love the new select bar! Wish more mention and fuss had been made about it as I almost missed it until I overheard someone else saying how to get it (in main menu tick select bar). It is really very very helpful and will reduce the RSI factor a good bit I think, no more clicking on submenus! Well done and thanks for this small thing dev team.

    First, Gaul, you are using last year's calendar, it is Friday the 12th. Now, to all of you poo-pooing those who are upset about the bridges. I check most of you and find you have played a year or 2, so you have no idea what we have listened to about bridges for EIGHT FREAKING YEARS. Those who have played longer are pvpers, and you got something you wanted this week, so be happy about that. But, at some point you lose all patience and you have to tell Rolf off. So stay out of it and let us blow off some steam. Most of us expected a delay, but the big mistake was not being honest about it. As late as last week, they told us there were still some collision issues, but no word there would actually be a delay. We got no word at all about the delay until AFTER the promised date arrived and the major update was finished, with the lame excuse they were so busy and tried their best to have it that day. Communication is everything, and the entire team decided to leave us in the dark, when they could have told us beforehand and most of us would have said ok, as long as they work when they get here. Personally, I still think it was a bait and switch, so here's my conspiracy theory. They had some new items for pvp, and Rolf can set up a server pretty fast. I think they knew a couple of weeks ago it wasn't going to happen, so instead of a major update of new items, they made a quick decision to set up a new pvp server to offer, since the last one they released was pve. It was an offer they hoped would get us to forgive and forget about bridges for a while, but Rolf has played this game too many times before, and some of us are tired of it.

    Lots of reasons but ultimately it comes down to this for me - I have zero desire to wreck other people's stuff or kill them in this game. I wouldn't enjoy PVP even when I was winning. I should probably point out that I do enjoy PVP in some other games, but that I think PVP and MMO is basically a terrible design combo, and PVP + Sandbox + MMO makes it even worse, and PVP + Sandbox + MMO + very grindy skills make it the worst combination anyone's ever come up with. It will _never_ be popular, and Wurm will only gain serious popularity when it focuses on building on it's strengths... which is sandbox PVE.

    Problem is, if it gave anything significant you would just a lotta um, unscrupulous types spamming pray on alts. I see it like farming, no use for it, just remove it off the chance for a random roll.

    Over the years we have heard various content and mechanic issues stemming from "spaghetti code" or "if we change X then it will adversly affect the play on either PVP side or the PVE side. Even in simply giving some meaning to the astronomical alignments seems to be a no go due to the client and server not seeing them in the same way. The code is complex and even today developers run into issues with the code being tempermental and in cases a bit overdone, so to speak. The question is - Has there ever been discussion about the possibility of changing the platform /engine on which Wurm runs? Has there ever been any disucussion about splitting the code base for PVE and PVP. Both those seem like obvious solutions to a lot of issues.What is the realistic viability of approaching those long standing issues from this perspective?

    You know what I find interesting with Wurm Online? Most MMO's start with many servers and as the population dwindles they consolidate some servers and retire others. But with Wurm, when the population dwindles they release a new server and sometimes with something thrown in that the others do not have. This is a very interesting concept that I still do not understand...

    All I know is that Trolls should spawn from under bridges more often than in the wild. Or at the least have the Troll's AI tweaked so they are attracted to hiding underneath them.

    228 friends deleted from rosedragon friendlist and there was only approx 10 online that I can say good bye. So I am going to say good bye here and hopefully the new owner don't get pestered too much by people thinking it is me. Wurm is a great community and I have great time building friendship. Here was my shelter from feeling incompetent in the last job and I have been living from trading things in wurm for almost two years. The art commissions also give me a reason to feel proud and improve my skills. And people have been so friendly, BL is like family for me, and my citizens on hills of aenasan, orpington bliss, and deathfell are my children. However, this whole immersion in friendships have come to a state that even if I limit my playtime to two hours a day, I spend the whole day thinking what to do and what would happens in wurm. It been too long I'm taking a rest. I am a creator, I have life goals, I can't stagnant and spend my time in game. So I quit, with hopeful thinking to be able to get back on my feet making games. Selling rosedragon will give me some months of peace and prohibit me to feel I can do something in wurm. Thanks again for all the good and bad, the joy and the sorrow. I apologize for all the mistakes and cruelty I have done and I forgive those that I felt have hurts me. I will still be around the internet if you search. regards, rose

    T minus 3.5 hours folks. If you aren't already sailing, you'd better head out immediately. For those like me coming from the north, NE or Pristine/Release, there is a series of shallow canals at P23 that provide sea access to Q22. T19 also has channels that run NE to Q22.

    It's awesome that some of the dev staff are actively playing. You can code all you like but there is no substitute for actually playing the game for real to understand the true impact of the feature they develop.

    One can like Putin or not, but in the particular case of ucraine the fault is clearly on the side of the US-regime and its european vasals. I myself - as german citizen - feel ashamed for the spinelessness of my government and the treason it commits on our interests and the idea of european union.

    Yes, could be nice, unless suddenly every item in my wardrobe turns into a female version as soon as I put it on. One of the nice things about Wurm is that I don't have to fight in a plate bikini.
