We have a great permanent Newbie Village at Hills of Aenasan (just east of Freedom Market) now thanks to Rosedragon and Jenks =D who did not let the dream die. Great place to drop in unannounced and ask for help, a free cottage, and a safe place to get started! oops it is gone now but North Indy Academy is now open -- read about it here. We have a rebuilt Public Mine just north of Freedom Market thanks to Carnaxus and many other members of the community who repaired dangerous dropshafts, located new iron veins and installed forges. We have replanted trees around the starter spawns making it easy for players to make a starter cart and tools and even now a settlement stake and find their own spot. What we need now is a way to help returning "older" players who quit Wurm for whatever reason, and are on occasion logging back all across independence to find their friends gone, their villages gone, their stuff all gone, they barely remember how to play. What happens for those returning vets in the next few hours will probably determine if they come back to Wurm or quit it forever. This thread is for them, posting resources that the community has to offer plus a chance for them to post requests for help and information We have many fine established villages that take in returning players, but sometimes these players only need a SMALL amount of help with no commitments. LANGUAGE HELP Sometimes we get large groups of players from non English countries. They are often shy to ask for help in public chat. Here they can inquire who else speaks their mother tongue, or players knowing Polish Korean Russian etc can post their names and invite these players to PM them for language help. ROWBOATS Some players returning to Indy will want to STAY here (yay!) but a number want to rejoin friends on Xanadu, or at least find more active villages there. Many of us have extra rowboats around the deed, or enjoy making rowboats as a way of skilling up shipbuilding. Prices fluctuate but often these are worth only 50c to 1 silver (more now due to new server demand) and it would be nice to 1) offer these for sale at a fair price (with lock and anchor) to those who can afford it 2) Offer FREE ones to players not yet able or willing to commit silver coins to the game. Those who can afford to pay, should. But some of us might be willing to kick in fifty cents lost profit to sponsor subsidize a returning player? The boats need to be set to the returning player as owner, so they can cross into Xanadu, they should be willing to "come and get it" if it is free, and to spend the 2-5 hours themselves rowing over to Xanadu and looking for their friends. they should never reselldonated boats for a profit but instead "pass on the love" to other new or returning players. LOANER CABINS For those who decide to stay on Indy, but want a quiet remote area to reacquaint themselves to the game, I'm suggesting some of us make available 1-4 weeks free stay at a guesthouse where they can prowl around on their own, byuild their own replacement tools or rowboat, explore for a new homestead site, or whatever they like. Again these would be "but you got to get here on your own" arrangements -- some of them will love the challenge of running cross-country naked with only an outdated map, others might want a place easier to get to. LOWGRADE REPLACEMENT TOOLS These are not enchanted uber tools and in many cases, are just spare copies of the 10Q non improvable newbie tools, but even those might be enough to help a returning player acquire some iron, chop a few trees, and remake their own tools. They might only need a steel & flint, a hatchet , a pickax and a carving knife to get started. ADOPT-A-RETURNEE Some want more social contact, but not really a full village, so here they can ask if anyone will "adopt" them for 1-2 weeks to help them reacclimate to the game. This might be a little more hands on than just a loaner cottage and involve someone willing to talk them through how to play the game with all of the new changes. Homestead Location Services Some of us know of great spots that are a bit off the beaten road, and would be happy to guide someone to these areas. In some cases they might be close to starter spawn but in other cases, they might be an hour or two out. Many returning vets are happy to make a one to two hour run so long as they know there is a good open spot for them at the end of the run. A mine and a nearby guard tower are always a big plus! Yes they can always just ask for help in public chat -- some may be shy especially if they have found public chat too "aggressive" in the past, or asked for help and felt ignored, so this is a more protected private place for them to ask. Also if they ask for help ingame and get little response, people can PM them a link to this thread to maybe get additional help. Yes they can always just join an established village -- some are shy making a commitment with people they do not know, or they REALLY want to do it on their own just need a small jumpstart help. Current players can post here various resources they can offer ("I'll offer rowboats, you get them today but must send me the 1 silver whenever you can afford it, even if it is weeks from now" etc etc. Whatever the terms they want to set -- cash up front or a promise to pass the boat on to another newbie etc. If you are offering a remote area cottage, then pictures and a map might be nice plus whatever terms you want to set ("If you do not log in for 15-20 days, you are kicked off the writ") For starters, I have a couple of "temporary use" guesthouse cottages in remote areas where they can get shelter, trees, mine access, I will post some maps and pix later, bit post here a request if you are interested in a free loaner cottage in a remote "hermit" area, where you can be alone to rediscover the game. Another project I would like to do "later down the road" is to clean up some old abandoned deeds that might make a great "first homestead" for a new player but are currently littered with ugliness and broken mines. I enjoy digging up old concrete slabs and replanting it with trees, repairing old guard towers, I am sure others enjoy "fixing" broken old mines etc, so maybe we can also clean up some ugly areas down the road and turn Indy beautiful and slum-free once more.

Here's a couple of suggestions that I and some others were discussing in Global. New items for example a decoration that can be used in houses like a Chinese folding partition or a glass wall. Something besides walls to add to the empty space in between on houses would be nice. Paintings to hang on walls or even a chalkboard to add lists and menus in game for the house. Cabinets for kitchens or even just for "looks" to make a home seem like a real home. Bookcases to put books in that players could create, trade, and sell. Making a real use for those table and chairs, sitting down to eat or drink would increase a particular character trait for a short amount of time. Coolers for raw meat and meals storage. Ducks, frogs, dragonflies, would be nice additions. You hear them in marshes, but never see them. Maybe even a pesky cloud of mosquitoes to chase you around? Simple yet adds more realism. Instead of using global chat to advertise items for sale, why not create a specialized chat just for selling and buying? This way people could use that instead of doing so in global. Movement of items needs to be allowed to skill up. This way moving could become quicker and easier then the current setup. Pushing and pulling at this time are very slow. While more precise then some games, still needs work. Need a way to increase distance or even pickup more items that are put down. In another game you could pack up your entire house into a suitcase (make it multiple if you want), and move then unpack. This, of course, is for longer distances then small. Small distance the pushing and pulling should be allowed to be set by the player for a certain distance instead of just small per tile. Maybe, a couple of tiles if necessary. This is all for today. I'm sure I will come up with more as I continue to play.

Considering you can't resize it, it's kind of annoying to have this giant map clogging up your screen that you can't minimize (double-clicking the bar just make it flash) ... and if you close it, it zooms back out and defaults to your current server. Would be cool to just be able to double-click the top bar on the map window and have it actually minimize like every other window in the game.

Yeah definately they run faster and chase more persistant now, as if they had no problems with stamina at all, which I personally find quite unsuitable. Was chased by a champ bear on a cart, couldnt get rid of him even at 23 kmh and he never even once stopped to take a break. Could not hit him with 70 huge axe & fight skill and 80 ql huge axe with 80+ nimbleness cast at all. Had to get guards to save me and then the problem was, guards were SLOWER!!! So I had to basically stop and wait a few minutes, take some bashes from the bear, until they were able to catch up and finally do their job. So thumb down for that change from me... I would suggest mobs should just stop chasing at some point or take breaks, and be a bit slower than a person with full stamina and full speed running along a street. Wildlife doesn't really need to get any more dangerous than it was a few days ago.

since the filename is wurm.20130130_.0123_.jpg, my guess it is from around January 30 2013 I don't recall when visible armor went in, I think maybe 2 years ago at most? edit actually I tracked down this photo from a Facepunch thread (those wacky kids): http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1205771&p=39414056&viewfull=1#post39414056 "Screenshot of some PvP on Epic last night, taken by Stalk. Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! I considered naming myself LarsTheMinion, ilivetoserve or something, but I thought 'Bucket' might get the point across as well.. you know, a thing you dump your stuff in Actually, I'm not opposed to the idea at all. I've only begun scratching the surface of Wurm, but it seems like a game that would generate alot of interesting stories and perspectives. Furthermore, an MMO is the community in a lot of ways, so it seems natural that the players should be highlighted. I don't really know how just yet though, I'll get back to you guys on that Thanks, feels good to hear! And yeah, Wox is really cool, been helpful every step of the way. Btw, I just got confirmation that the next weeks interview is going to be with Rolf, anything specific you would like me to ask him about?

No way to aggro's spawning on deed tiles! You are mislead or confused to have thought that they have ever had the ability to do this. I found a few trolls on my fenced in deed but determined that they had spawned within the mine and wandered outside of it to then break down mine entrance walls because they were "penned" within the deed. Anyway, aggressive animals have never had the ability to spawn upon deed tiles and they never should have that ability enabled. The only *almost* secure refuge we have from these aggro pests is upon our fenced in deed tiles and this should never be compromised for the sake of those who want these aggro's delivered to their front doorstep within deeds. It's bad enough that trolls can already bash down deed tile walls and enter within, pestering the inhabitants, not to mention rampaging uniques who seem to have complete deed destruction and deed animal killing abilities enabled. I would confidently say that the vast majority of Wurm players want to have nothing to do with aggros on this basis. =Ayes=

Im not going to subtly slate off any kingdoms in the bump, nor am i going to give you a reason to join a specific kingdom. All im going to say is that if you want to join a good community in wurm, Chaos is for you. I have never met such a tight nit gaming community in my life. We're like families, we look out for our brothers and sisters. We dont sell things to each other, nor do we use people for profit, but instead we give things and receive things from our friends. We help each other out with deeds, items and even problems which they might have. Do you want to have a purpose to play wurm? Do you want to be part of something greater? Do you want to be part of a family? Come to Chaos Bump!

Hello, my name is Lars. I'm an intern here at Code Club AB. Nice to meet you all! As part of the interview that's about to go up with Wurm's Art Director Emil "Wox" Norrman, Emil was kind enough to make a comprehensive break-down of his work-process. The showcase is the 'Game Master Dark'-model, which he used to scare the crap out of me when I first jumped into Wurm. You can find it here! zip file with pdf version

I am guessing you are a new player - just to clarify - Guard Towers do require a fair amount of materials if your a new player but its a good way to skill up masonry and I made one with my newbie character in about 6 hours - which by Wurm standards is not a lot of time. Yes if you drop a deed it will cost you money but the minimum deed is less than 2 Dollars a month (and that's with 1 Spirit Templar) - which equates to about 1 beer or a happy meal from MacDonalds - that's for a whole month and hours and hours of entertainment - how long does a beer/happy meal last? Not sure why you are mentioning mortar here - you don't need mortar to set up a deed. As BabylonHoruv has mentioned - running is the noobies tactic for dealing with mobs - until you get some armour and a half decent weapon - (which doesn't take that long to obtain) As far as I know mobs have not had a speed buff recently - when you say "Earlier" - when exactly are you talking about? The loss in skills at the beginning is negligible as you can regain the skills in one or two actions! And where did you get the notion that Veterans have this elitist attitude? Apart from one or two bad apples (which in my opinion is a lot less than your average online game) most veteran players are willing to go out of their way to help new players. Maybe Wurm just isn't the game for you - but if you stick with it, it is one of the most enjoyable games on the market at the moment!

I would like to know more about which projects are in active development? What are the immediate plans for the future in wurm? What is being done about old bugs in the game that have never been fixed? Such as canals booting players off their ships. Is anyone working on fixing the lights? Is someone working on a way to monitor an animal cap per zone, Instead of increasing the amount of creatures in already super infested areas? Basically anything that has to do with the game.

You obviously didn't play a Fo priest after the Animal AI update. So don't pretend everything is hunky-dory. I had fun on my Fo priest too until that damn update ruined everything. Then I ended up giving my toon away in frustration. When you get so goddamn frustrated you give your toon away, and quit the game, it's not "fun" alright? It's not even a matter of personal opinion. There are threads full of pictures from other users proving what I am talking about. For months I didn't have a single packed dirt on my deed. Then all of a sudden it becomes 100% packed dirt overnight. I replant it all with flowers, get rid of over half my animals, next day, all packed dirt again. I didn't pay a sub for this crap. You can continue throwing money at Rolf if you like, but some of us know how to vote with our wallet when we're not happy with a product/service. ANIMALS RUN AWAY FROM YOU, PACK DIRT LIKE STEAM ROLLERS, AND THE BISON/UNICORNS MURDER ALL THE AGGRO MOBS: http://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/topic/101870-please-finally-fix-the-animals/page-1 LOW MOB COUNT DUE TO ANIMAL PREDATOR/PREY AI AND REDUCED SPAWNS FOR XANADU: http://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/topic/104374-low-mob-count/page-1 That makes Fo useless as a battle priest, which was basically my main role since I enjoyed fighting. But healing powers are useless when there's not even a goddamn wolf on the whole continent. Maybe I could have joined in hunting the uniques and got that Dragon Slayer title though... NO TITLES FOR HELPING SLAY DRAGONS: http://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/topic/104357-no-title-for-slaying-the-dragon/page-1 Well goddamn, guess I'm glad I didn't waste time with that. With how angry I already am, this would have surely pissed me off.... But wait, I'm sure the GM's will help these players out. After all, they did sail across 2-3 servers in some instances. Oh wait, they didn't. And they deleted the post I was going to quote because I quoted it yesterday, and apparently their mod buddies on here decided it would make them look bad. Such great customer service. Screw you over, then hide the evidence, and lie about it. Great company policy, guys.

Well a lot has changed in the last 4 days - seems things have gotten better - the increased FS for sharks seems to have done the trick - on my way to Xanadu from Release today I saw a load of shark corpses floating about on the sea! :-) And just to chime in on some of the posts in this thread - I don't think putting mobs in specific regions is a good idea - I think that the random mobs all over the place is as much an element of Wurm as the crafting - the nervous feeling of wandering down a road not knowing what you could bump into or venturing down a dark mine and you turn a corner and are suddenly nose to nose with a Lava Fiend is a big part of Wurm for me.

I think that wurm is really about immersion, not achievment. Let's face it, there is nothing really challenging in WURM, no real skill required, just patience to repeat same actions thousands and thousands of times. And being the "best" player is nothing about being the smartest, fastest or skilled player, but just the player that wasted spent the biggest amount of time and/or money. There is absolutely no way how a six month player (no matter how skilled or smart) can "beat" a 10 years old player, while in most games, presuming you are good enough, you can easily become a top player if you are better skilled (smarter, better game knowledge, faster reaction, etc) than anyone else. That's why I feel that if you spend time grinding, that's just wasted time. The only way I feel is worth playing the game is to just do what you enjoy, focus on having fun, not even track skills and just stay assured that they will eventually raise anyway. Or how I like to say it: WURM is not a sprint, but a marathon. If you want to become the best, you don't have to min-max everything, but just resist (not quit) longer than everyone else who will overburn themselves.

I feel the current system wastes a lot of resources trying to simulate stuff that nobody sees. Take for example Xanadu with 600 players logged in at the same time. How much of the server could these players reach within for example 5 minutes of movement? 5%? Meanwhile nobody sees the mobs located in the other 95% of the map, so why simulate them if nobody can see them? Isn't that a huge waste of resources right there? So another option is to make mob spawning more instanced, without it looking that way to the player. What I mean there is that you should only spawn mobs within the vicinity of a player (like within 5 minutes of a player, to account for travel), after all if a 1 square km area has no logged in players in it, then there's no point in having mobs there. Once mobs have been spawned then they should be despawned if no player has been near them for, for example, an hour. Lairs and deeds could still be used to determine what spawns where just as how it works now. Tamed and branded mobs should be exempt from this and never despawn, same for mobs on deed. So if you put a tamed mob on deed and it goes untamed then it's still on a deed, so it won't despawn. Possibly also don't make them despawn if they are completely fenced in (assuming it is feasible to check for this). In the case that spawning mobs requires quite a bit of resources then maybe it would be an option to create them all in advance, but storing them somewhere off the server? Then when you need to spawn some mobs you can just move them onto the server. When you need to despawn one you move it back to storage. Only if a mob dies do you need to generate a new one (and when a new creature is born through breeding). This might solve the lack of mobs issue as you no longer need to simulate mobs which nobody sees anyway, and would make the server look and feel more alive as more mobs can be near each player. This solution also scales a lot better with server size, as it's the online player count which influences how many mobs need to exist, not the size of the server. The spawning of mobs could take into account brand new players (less than 24 hours old) and spawn less mobs around them. If the amount of mobs in an area also depends on the amount of lairs, then players have some control over the safety of an area as they could attempt to remove lairs of the more dangerous creatures. If some servers need to be more dangerous than others then the density of spawned mobs could be increased on those servers. Uniques should obviously be exempt from this, possibly exempt champion mobs too, in which case champion mobs could take up a similar functionality to lairs in this system, increasing the amount of their kind spawned in their area when a player is nearby.

Not the best picture, but this is what I came across after hours of sailing with my main character to my Xanadu deed: I knew someone had suggested Serpent Bay for that body of water... I thought my journey might be over soon, but I was able to sail around it outside aggro distance and moor safely.
