This is why we, the South Pearls Alliance, dont like players deeding in Skeleton Desert on South Exodus. The templar of this place (Forest Edge) kills all animals trespassing the deed border. And its a lot of corpses there..... While we try to keep the desert a clean place, suitable for some fine hunting fun. Not just for alliance-members, but for all players on the Freedom Isles who wanna give hunting a serious try.

The fact that you took that PM seriously and consider it a major issue and started this thread about it concerns me way more than a group of people with a bunch of animals actively maintained on a lovely deed that is set up to take into account the artificial limitations on keeping animals that exist because you can't make animal AIs work decently -- namely the fact that we have to individually pen them, because even with two breeders to a 2x1 pen, if one is born while I'm on a week long vacation, my horses are going to die of disease when that third is born. I'm not saying that this is a problem, I'm just saying let's not pretend that keeping that many animals is easy or done by people who aren't enjoying it. In fact, their deed doesn't look all that different from mine. If you screw with this because of some guy who doesn't understand how to adjust his settings or suck it up and deal with the fact that you, Rolf, have a game client that is so awful it crashes daily for me even on what amount to the lowest settings (on a brand new computer!) then I (and I can only assume many others) are going to be very unhappy. Not so much because you took away an aspect of the game that I like and am a crybabby about it, but because you don't seem to have a very good decision-making model in your head sometimes, and as awesome as Wurm is, there comes a point at which I want to play a game because I trust the developer to do the right thing on purpose, not on accident as you seem to have done with what apparently began as a vision for a full-loot pvp game.

Personally, I don't think anyone who does not keep a herd should have any voice at all concerning any limitations they want to impose by decree on people who are doing something they themselves are not doing. I have heard this one over and over again and it is always the same refrain. "I don't like what x does! There ought to be law! (That does not affect ME.)" Because such people are at the core of it simply trying play dictator over something that will not affect themselves or their own enjoyment, but only the enjoyment of others. They are trying to control by decree the game playing, the lives, of others. We have a more than sufficient supply of Nannyfied Socialist Wannabe Dictators in the real world, I can certainly do without that in a game I play as a form of escape from that world. Oh, did someone just get mad at me for speaking bluntly? Welcome to Freedom of Speech. I'm already kind of mad at the the poeple who are trying, YET AGAIN, to get rid of my horse herd by forced decree.

This makes me sad and I love my animals, and I take very good care of them. When others need animals I am more than willing to help them, and believe me I have helped a lot. I have been here over a year and a half and until now no one has complained about my animals. I am in the process of remodeling the ranch and when its ready a lot of my animals will be moved to the back of the ranch closer to the desert if u will. Not so close to the highway in front of Boppington and Mskb Ranch. I won't be moving them all but enough I hope it helps others with their lag issues if that is actually what is causing them, which I doubt. I don't feel I should have to remove my animals because someone has lag issues. I am sure if it is not my animals someone will find something else to complain about when it does not accomidate them. I have worked hard for what we have here at Boppingtonville and Mskb Ranch and I will continue to do so. I have tried to make the highways beautiful and very passive but there is an alternate way to get to the south if you have lag issues coming thru our towns. We at Mskb Ranch thank all of you for your support in this matter!! Kins.

Thats MSkb ranch on exodus owned by Kins, she breeds and looks after them all, i dont think you should do anything at all, except tell the person to get a better PC, i never lag around there, theres a perfectly great hunting spot 2 mins behind there in the S exodus desert full of critters, its not effecting hunting at all

I'm currently porting the whole program from Java2d to LWJGL. Here are the (very early) results (from oldest to latest): First beta will be available in about 2-3 weeks.

Reasons for a large herd: Grinding Animal Husbandry - Anyone who spends a large period of time grinding their AH will need a large herd because the grooming cooldown is so long. Starting a Breeding Operation from scratch - The more horses you have, the faster your breeding stock will improve, this is forced on the players simply because of the randomness of traits when breeding. Horse Seller - Buyers are picky and want to be able to choose from a variety, nothing really can be done about that. PvP - I am the main horse breeder for my Village. Horses are the first to die in an engagement and take a month to grow up. I have to breed a lot of horses and I have to breed them a month in advance just to keep up with the demand. Hoarder - I've been killed a 'horse murderer' so I guess some people get overly attached to the pixels. Suggestions: Remove foals. They're cute but they're also useless pixels for what 3 weeks?. Make horses pop out at young adult age just like hell horses, That'll cut down on total numbers by probably 1/3. Remove or greatly reduce the grooming cooldown period. Noone has to wait 1 hour to do something. Meditating:30min, Praying:20min,lockpicking 10min,Groom horse:1hour. Imagine if you had to wait an hour to imp an item.

An in-game voting system would be cool. Just allow only one vote per account, IP, and MAC Address, and I think it'll be a good way to get some decent feedback from in-game players.

My opinion is there no change needed, the problem is not with the breeding system. The problem is with animations and rendering, which should detect excessive framerate drop and automatically lower or stop a set of features, based on the detected fps value. Games often set the graphics settings to recommended set of values, based on a quick benchmark.

PvP on Elevation is supposed to be based on hunting for rewards and loot. This is why focus is on rewards there and will be tweaked upwards until they are satisfying. Equipment is a means to achieve those rewards, but of course also function as rewards in themselves. When playing on Elevation you are however supposed to be prepared to sacrifice your equipment at the table so to speak, as if betting in poker. This will increase the rewards for everyone. I suggest that we add something like an hour logoff timer when logging off on deed. We need to combine this with a lot stronger guards. The reason is of course that we have no idea who is an alt or not. It will also encourage you to stay and fight or run away. It should also be possible to defend alone and make a difference against attackers, possibly knocking one or two off together with the guards. It should be fun and rewarding to defend, and attackers should have to want to use their best equipment when raiding.

I agree 100%. Hunting grounds are hard to come by. Even if not player controlled, there should be certain areas in-game that cannot be deeded.

http://freedom001.game.wurmonline.com/mrtg/items.html It can't handle a billion rockshards, its at its limit now so its time to impose limits on actions a player can do per day to prevent the item database from collapsing. Also the stupid comment was about earning money, because all the breeders I know do it for fun, pay real money for the game and don't sell gold coins. Most players I know with millions of items in satchel fountains inside magic chests to workaround the bsb decay mechanism sell gold coins however and don't support the game in any way. Seriously, if the server can't handle more than few thousands animal at a time, its time to work on more efficient code.

Barns. And as others have said, this isn't an example of the worst abuses I've seen. But I think that it is about time for a solution to allow players to store animals a bit easier. Imagine a barn, like a BSB, which stores all the descriptors of animals, including whether or not they need grooming, or are pregnant, whatever. You lead animals to the barn, and put them in, or you can pull them out. If you want your place to look like a farm, keep some of the animals out in the open, but if you want to keep 10,000 cows for your cheese factory, then feel free. The barn should also require that sufficient feed be generated for the animals inside. A FSB next to a barn could "link" to it so that the animal's food needs would be supplied from the FSB. Dead animals would need to be removed before live animals could be removed. Various other restrictions / rules / whatever could be put in place to turn hundreds of resource hogs into hundreds of simple database entries. It would not be as efficient as BSB's for storage if the animals can keep all their stats, but they could be removed from the world.

I see no problem with this. Get a better PC or just play on low settings. Yes I can see some problems with lag. The lag at 2012 impalong was pretty bad. If the players can manage to keep all those animals alive and actually care for them, we shouldn't punish them for that.
  17. 2 points
Leave breeding and keeping animals alone. For the love of fo, its the reason half your customers pay your bills. Instead, work on optimizing so people who play on lesser computers don't have as much lag. As for the creatures and hunting : http://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/topic/74748-hunting-server/ Breeders not affected, hunters happy, no one sad except the few people who are simply playing on bad systems - but should we get affected because someone else has a bad computer? I never have much fps lag, and I play on full settings on a four year old build. You shouldn't expect to run supersmooth in full settings on an old computer though. You can't expect that for any game.
  18. 2 points
Regardless of if that is excessive or not, the repercussions of punishing the "abusers" on the "legit" players are often painful and frustrating - look at the drama over enchanted grass and disease. Don't ruin the game for everyone because of a select few.

YOUR dead mobs? No. Aslong as your guard has killed them just because they walked on your land they're not yours. You put zero effort into getting the corpse there, its not yours. +1 for re-allowing the picking up of corpses you butcher on someone else's deed and the ability to bury them. Maybe that will also cut down on those ridiculous meat farm Templar deeds.

Due to widespread support, a suggestion that on PvP servers (Epic and the Chaos servers) (edit: Initially Elevation) you will be able to threaten a personal merchant to drop his items in order to get around the storage exploits will be implemented. It's not optimal but it is a step in the right direction. This will probably make it to the live servers after the weekend. The current decoration limit of 5 items will be increased to 15. The reason for the limit is that if you drop an unlimited amount of decorations on all floor tiles in all houses there will be so many to render that people may not be able to log on or play. Edit: As you may see above, this change will initially be implemented and evaluated on Elevation only. Needless to say, the merchants will not instadrop items as soon as an enemy approaches. Instead all deed guards will have to be killed, there will be a timer of several minutes and a message broadcast. They will drop all items, because if there is a random factor they will just be filled up with garbage to lessen the chance of a useful drop.

It would be nice to integrate tracking into the game using a dog, which would increase the range in which you detected a scent trail, and doing this method would make the actual tracking proccess much quicker. The downfall of this is of course that the scent trail disappears quicker than a regular foot trail. The dog would be able to detect a scent path within about 10 tiles. How many separate paths the dog was able to find would pop up, you'd choose which scent trail you want the dog to follow, and then after your dog sniffs around, it would give you a compass direction saying which way the scent leads. After just a few hours, mabye 2-3, the scent trail should disappear, to simulate wind carrying the skin particles and etc which contain the scent away. A quick sceario which this would be used is as follows: 17:00: Someone breaks in and steals your horses 17:25: A random person walks by your house, but does not disturb anything. 18:33: You log on and notice your horses are gone so you get your dog. 18:36: You use your dog and sniff a few times around your house and horse pen, finding 2 trails. 18:37: You decide to follow Path 1 which was the person who stole your horses. 19:12: You finally reach the end of the scent, and find someone's house, and see your stolen horses. A piece of clothing recently worn by someone could also be used to track down them. For instance, if someone wore a cloth shirt within the past week, you give it to your dog to sniff, and then your dog can instantly detect if there's a trail for the person within the past few horus within 50 tiles. This is how dog tracking works in real life for things like prison imnates. They bring along a garment of the inmate and use bloodhounds to track them down through the woods and etc.

all i can say is. Dont Desand the sandbox these is already disease + packing of enchanted grass to reduce the hording. for someone to have a good horse/cow/hell horse/anything breeding setup they must be active. and a generaly decent/large deed there is many other pressing issues. if you get lag in game. you should have to adjust your settings accordingly, note my prior pc didn't like work very well so it was set on low/very low. I am still confused by the reason for this besides to see the reaction of the active forum users

To be honest, all that has changed in the bit you have quoted is instead of listing the exploits they know, they now include exploits they didn't know about. That, and adding the word "obvious" before abuse to make it apply to cases where someone clearly knows what they are doing is probably abuse, rather than just normal gameplay. Nothing there seems ridiculous *shrug* My view would be to use /support if you are concerned something you are doing may be an exploit, but i dont know if someone with more authority will give a different answer.

And who said it has to be the game server sending out emails? The web server can read the server logs which are already there and already used for the twitter updates, and lookup the account information in the shop database, and also send a forum PM if they have an account or get the email from the account. The shop could even be used to customize a silver offer (since it already customizes based in prior purchases), i.e. buy 6mo upkeep for a discount. This is customer retention 101 stuff, make it easy to renew and hard to ignore upkeep is due, and entice them if you think they are going to leave.

The problem, i think, lies in what is an acceptable mechanic and what is not. The term "Wogic" was invented for a reason, as many systems and mechanics in this game behave in a very inconsistent or illogical manner. Just as an example: Wrapping items in a barrel to get around restrictions in the mail system is an obvious exploit to circumvent game systems, thus according to these rules is cheating and a bannable offense. Yet, to this day I know of absolutely nobody that has been punished for doing it. With that reasoning, one could assume it's perfectly allowed despite the fact that there has been no announcement about the practice from the dev team or moderators (at least not to my knowledge). What then differs from this situation compared to any other exploit? Or perhaps the wording of the rule is to be taken very literally, and only exploits concerning the obtaining of items or skill points counts? In that case, everything else would be fair game, and that doesn't sound very likely. This whole thing is especially confusing for new players, as there's just no easy way for them to know whats just "wogic" and what isn't. If it truly is all a matter of the opinions of the devs or moderators, then the rule should say: "The obvious abuse of any (according to our opinion, which varies from case to case) exploit, bug or other methods of gaining skill and/or obtaining items that isn't as intended. (macros are covered by the rule above) Doesn't have quite the right ring to it, though, does it? /edited many many times for spelling

2 things in mind... 1. So a bunch of ppl killed a dragon -a unique that won't respawn to repeat the kill... You paid a handsome amount to get your hands on a drake piece (much more serious, a set).... Somebody killed you and you dropped it (consider this also in the 1H-logout option).. He placed it on a non-fighting alt and logged him out.... What are your chances to get drake again? 2. You made a rare weapon... You enchanted it, or paid for enchantments.. You made it a heirloom or you planned to.. It was stolen from your chest and now resides forever on an inactive alt just to spite you. Do you have a shot at reclaiming it? Wasn't it supposed to be part of the game? So basically, I would speak about unique items, glimmer /adamant gear, highly prized gear that are locked away from game and it's intended mechanics. Also, I'd like to add... If I'm a newcomer to Elevation (and I was), I am prone to die often and keep losing gear. But at the same time, in the off-chance I outsmart someone and single him out in the open and kill him, I still don't get my gear back.. The reason? The truth. NOBODY actually plays with FS 70 on Elevation. Or at least not without 70+ PvP subskills. When they outpower you by so much, they don't need to pack their best gear to fight you. So the older, stronger players remain stronger and wealthier and choose what gear to sell back to you so they'll never become less than what they were -in control. This will leave the same bunch of ppl pvping on Elevation and players like me, moving back to Home servers. Personally, I don't mind it that much but I dramatize the examples to get a point across.

How about we just completely remove them from the game. Sounds fair to me as it removes the gap from Pay to Win and Play to Win.
  36. 1 point
Basically let's say you're raiding.. The Talamo, just a deed name I made up wasn't ever real. You and eight other raiders hit local, and there's some guy there named Stonefunk. He goes, "Well, I can't defend against these 8. #yolo #outofhere #nochance." He logs in a 2 alts, grabs all loot he possibly can, and logs off. He knows he can't defend the deed, but he can protect his gear, or some of it. Is there anything wrong with this? In my opinion not really, because it's not abusing any game mechanics, he logged in a paying premium alt, he was online, and has a right to defend and grab his gear. Do many do this? No. Don't be misguided, I raid a lot, and I've rarely seen people do this anymore except 1 or 2 cases. Even then, I do not disagree that it's their right to grab their stuff and log.
  37. 1 point
Why would you want to wait 2 days to breed? Not everyone spends his life on this mate. Besides if i had to wait longer between attempts, i'd probably just keep more animals so i can have the same level of "production".
  38. 1 point
Well I'm normally a PvP player myself, but one of the biggest reasons I didn't join in Wurm PvP was that I could loose my place not because I was the weaker fighter, but because i had to sleep or work. But having the deed truly defeated with all citizens protecting it, even as NPC, I would agree with more.
  39. 1 point
One problem with this I think is it reduces the chance of defenders "giving it a go" and attempting to defend their deed, even if they're outnumbered. Instead of trying to resist until the last minute, when the raiders finally break into the main deed, people will just log off as soon as they see they can't easily repel the raid to guarantee the safety of their stuff. A good example is the raid on Capehorn, despite there only being 3 of us online to defend, against around 13 JK + a champ nogump, we stuck around for at least 3/4 hours trying to hold them off, even after they were ondeed (no gump and all). After that we were able to log off, sad we'd lost the deed, but happy for a bit of pvp. I presume the attackers enjoyed it more than an empty deed too. If this change was introduced, it would be much harder to see the benefits from hanging around and fighting when the odds are stacked against you.

Aye an hour is way over the top. As Vean mentioned, 20 min with an enemy in local is more reasonable.
  41. 1 point
I would change 1h with something more reasonable like, 20 min but only when enemy is in local. Deeds are places where players hide there valuables and themselves from enemy, making deeds less usable may cause people not making so many of them in future (like myself).

It's just one of the issues of playing on a PvE server and not necessarily the fault of the ones that simply enjoy breeding, taking care or, and selling animals. The game just needs to be optimized to handle more rather than cripple a play style people enjoy. But if you want to see wild animals you could always play on a PvP server. I started breeding entirely from wild horses I found. I got 6 sets plus a few extras over the course of a week making occasional trips to the steppe. If you want to carry out violent acts against other people and their property you can always play on a PVP server and then you're free to. Just be wary they might not appreciate it and fight back. You do realize there are people that enjoy breeding animals and taking care of them right? If we're going to be doing stuff like this let's be fair and make it apply to other professions as well. There are problems with numbers of items in the database after all as well. And when we have too many items lets make them randomly take accelerated damage when the item counts start getting high. The animal AI needs to be fixed before anything like this is even considered. I have a 59x59 area for animals to wander in and I still get dozens of them cramming in half a dozen tiles in the corners.

Hi, I agree that both lag and the lack of certain wild critters are problems, and that something should be done about it. But it should be something that helps, not something "just to do something". As for lag, the number of penned animals hasn't changed significantly. But the lag has increased significantly - so it has to have another reason, this much is safe to say. Is it the animations, is it the new models, is it anything else? Up to the Dev's to find out. It's not penned critters, because there's lag as well where no single penned animal is in the local. (Remark: The numbers of animals needed for breeding could be reduced if there'd be no more danger of trolls releasing the whole breeding herd, and the number of animals needed for riding could be reduced if aggressive animals would stop to kill them ...) As for the spawning in the wild, and hunting: 2 different areas here, non-aggressive animals (blue outline) and aggressive critters (red outline). Both of them are spawning constantly, and, as the mrtg shows, the number of both is rather constant - at the respective cap I assume. Let's have a look at them: Non-aggressive animals (blues): People are complaining they don't find any horses nor cattle. Instead unicorns are spawning, in great numbers! Or dogs, or deer, whatever lair is in the area. It seems lair spawns have precedence over area spawns, and the lairs are producing this much creatures that there's close to no "slot" left for the area spawns ... (A unicorn spawn in our area can easily produce 9 unicorns or more, in 1 RL day!) . Aggressive animals (reds): Main problem here is, IMHO, the templars. Where there are deeds, a large number of freshly spawned reds are killed within minutes by the ghostly butchers. (They kill all and anything on deed as default) When one gets killed another one spawns. And gets killed within minutes. Repeat ... Until it spawns in a caved-in mine, falls into an off-deed mine, or spawns somewhere far out in the wilderness. It might even be possible that the slaughtered corpses still count to the cap - not long ago we didn't find a single animal (alive) near our deeds, but when we buried the 30+ corpses littering the limits of the nearby deeds within a very short time a serious number of reds spawned nearby ... These are the reasons for the problems, in my opinion. Of these problems the lag problem should have a high priority, because it's the most hindering one, for all and everyone. I hope it's addressed with all power and professionalism, without actionism, and without band-aid patches. Hunt down 'em bugs, squish 'em, don't forget to bury 'em after. Libila might come to raise 'em again, else ... Have fun!

Let me start with ..... I am a newb, playing less than two months. I want to give a different perspective - if the OP ever reads this perhaps they could take something from it. (Wall of text warning, short attention spans scroll to the bottom) My first three deaths were to falling - it was annoying but I learned fast what I was doing wrong. My first death to an animal? I was traveling too quickly and not paying attention, went to an uninhabited portion of an island, went over a hill and ran into multiple critters. The results?, never found that corpse, probably wouldn't have been able to get to it if I did. What did I learn? Be more careful in low and underpopulated areas. I found a quiet area and built some basic equipment, struggled to build a small cart, thought I was doing good - logged in one day to find a lot of my stuff missing. Lesson: build a place to live with an enclosure to protect the stuff I want to keep. Found a nice place that I thought I wanted to live - hung out in the area for a while got to talking with people in local. Found out someone already had plans for that location but helped me find a place I could build nearby. Started to build some stuff and one day someone else had deeded the property. I was a bit frustrated and hadn't built a "proper" enclosure yet, but engaged the person in conversation, they invited me to the village and all is going well. Lesson: Deed it or loose it (or talk nice and maybe they will let you join them). I have worked mostly solo on things - digging, mining, growing food and cotton, cutting (and replanting) trees, making tools and equipment. I engage in conversation with the neighbors so don't consider myself to be a true hermit (very low population in village). Decided to give critter killing a try (after I made sure to have cotton and a few basic healing covers) - near zero skill, no armor and a staff - rats were hard to take down so I made myself a short sword - rats are no problem now. I have also learned the art of running from higher mobs and if that doesn't work heading for the nearest guard tower and yelling help - the guards don't care if you help take down the beasts. Oh and don't piss off unicorns!!!! I found the free play good - but went premium within two weeks to see the mechanics beyond skill 20 in whatever I was doing. I have dual monitors on my computer, one has Wurm the other has the Wiki always open. I also watch the CE channel more than any other and learn a lot from the questions of others and ask the occasional one myself. I make mistakes - I learn from them, pick up the pieces (or corpse) and move on. If I were to give any input it would be the same as many - including staff - have already said, more work on the tutorial. A little work on the lag issues would be nice too, but for the most part not a deal breaker. My take on the game? It has quirks, I like most of the quirks. It has a different feel than any other mmo I have ever played, it feels good. The pace is what you make it, you are not forced on endless quests (I hate quests, EQ2 burned me out on those long ago) If I want pvp I can go to the pvp server, if not I can go about my business. It is not catered to the cries of every "i can't do this", "it's not fair", "i can't compete with the veteran players" Will I continue to play - you bet. Sorry for the long winded post.

A merchant is yours. You own him, can move him around, etc. His job is to work for you selling stuff you made. He wont sell anything else, and he never buys anything. One time cost of 10s. A trader (once placed) works for the king, and belongs to the deed of the player who plants him. Once planted, they cannot be moved. His job is to sell and buy goods for the king. As such, he sells the "trader items". One time cost of 50s. If managed properly, the trader gets money from the king periodically, and you can sell stuff to him to get that money. Traders available to the public are hard to manage, as folks tend to just drain them for all the coin they have.

Time is the most valuable commodity in Wurm. Always has been, always will be. This method, with the creation time expanded as I described it, would actually take more time to get the same materials. A lot of people who buy bricks and whatnot in mass do so because they want to be doing other things with their time. Some people who currently buy bulk items would probably make their own bulk items with this system, but a lot of people would still buy them, so they can do other things with their time ingame.

That is exactly what they are designed to do. They did exactly what you pay them for, which is protect your land. The person who butchers the animal is the one who puts the effort into gathering the meat, not you. All you did was simply log on and look around for meat to collect that so happened to walk onto your deed. People who actually hunt for their meat are harmed by this, if anything. Honestly, the person who butchers the animal should be allowed to pick up whatever they butchered, not the deed owner. That and animals should be avoiding deeds unless lured into, which is what I suggested months ago: http://forum.wurmonl...animal-pathing/ -1
