He knows that he has darkness inside himself. The demon horse is a manifestation of his shadow self. The demon inside if you will. He knows what he can do and accepts it. If he pushed it away then he would become controlled by the darkness inside because he would then become blind/ignorant to it. Then he would become unholy and fall into darkness.
