Constant lag on server

Recommended Posts

I'm getting constant lag on server now.

Log is spammed by "adding to lag list".

Computer seems to be running fine - CPU is at 1%, ram 7GB out of 32GB.... Network utilization - 1%....it seems all fine....   But the wurmserver is having mega-lag. When ingame, there is constant "Refreshing".

Any ideas?

Some ideas:

1) Could be your hosting provider - never hurts to put in a support ticket and ask. Sometimes they starve resources on virtual machines

2) Check how much logs, dirt, kindling, rock shards you have lying on the ground on your server. Can do a sql query to delete anything with dmg > 0 in order to remove everything except freshly placed stuff (be careful with this query - check three times and be cautious what items you include)

3) How many animals do you have on the server and how big is the server? If you get rid of animals be selective. Pigs, sheep etc don't have saddles and horse shoes so less risk removing those then horses, hell horses etc that have other dependencies

4) There is a performance tweaking thread here that fine tunes some of the server settings to give better performance

5) Make sure you have enough memory and cpu. Perhaps you have two many things going on for the amount of cpu/memory/network that you have available to you

6) Could be a network issue too

Private server hosting only one map.

It's run just fine for two years. Just acting up now.

8k server. 150k animals.

CPU is running at 1% load.

Ram is 7GB used from 32GB..

Network is running at 1% load.

All other things run fine. (FTP-server etc).

If it's a dedicated physical server then unlikely to be an issue. If it's a virtual machine/VPS etc then it could easily change at any point in time if a provider decides to change resource allocation

If the server has been running for the 1 and a bit years since WU release it's also possible that your database is getting a bit bloated. Something you also might want to review.

Anyway, if I can think of some more ideas then I will post them in the thread. The things I listed are the common ones that impacted performance on heavily used PVP servers (think 62 online concurrent players and 20+ player battles) where any lag at all is a problem.

Best of luck. The lag thing can be annoying until figured out.
