Slopes and leveling

Recommended Posts

I would love to see a mod that added a Raise Slope and Lower Slope option, and perhaps a change to Flatten as well.Raise Slope would add dirt to the 2 corners opposite your position, while Lower Slope would remove dirt. It could do just 1 dirt in each corner, or repeat (and you can interrupt it when you get the desired slope. This would make it so much easier to make nice looking roads and terraforming in general. It would also be nice to be able to use the Level command with just having the tile border between you and the target tile, as opposed to having to be on a level tile. I know others have probably asked for something like this before. Maybe one of our Great modders might take up the challenge.

This functionality already exists via the flatten and level commands.

Lets say you want to start at the top of a hill and make a flat road going down.

1.  Flatten the top tile even with the tile you're on.  This would be the first sloped tile of the road, but you want to raise it flat with the top of the hill.

2.  Stand on the tile you just flattened, target the tile in front of you, now target the tile border farthest away from you that goes from left to right touching that tile and flatten the tile border.

3.  Now level the tile that is in front of you until it is twice as steep as the desired slope of the road.  (If you want to make a 15 slope road, stop leveling when the dirt is 30 slope on both sides.

4.  Flatten THAT tile.  You will notice the slope of the tile you are still standing on becomes 15 slope, and the tile in front of you is flat.  Rinse and repeat steps 2-4 until you reach the bottom of the hill.

It requires a minimal amount of dirt, unless you're standing in front of the Grand Canyon, and zero dirt gets wasted by flowing.

That wouldn't be too bad if level adjusted the corners evenly. But it frequently doesn't which means you have to look at both slopes while it's leveling, at least if you were going uphill. Downhill it might add to both corners so it would be easier. Given that both flatten and level are much slower than digging, and having to do both to get the desired slope means it is probably easier to just dig the dirt manually at that point. The only real advantage is the dirt flow prevention, but if your slope is that steep you are going to have other issues to deal with (namely your road will end up stick out in space if the slope drops that much).
