Roads roads roads

Recommended Posts

It is human nature to desire to travel and explore, and preferrably from within the luxury and safety of our cars, errm carts! One day the wilderness of Xanadu will have been cut into little parcels of lawns and grape orchards by a myriad of intersecting roads, but for now stretches of good cobble is few and far between.

I am very curious how the network will develop, but alas the volunteer map does not handle roads at this time. But I want to know! So tell us about which places / lakes / villages / deeds /starter towns are connected in your region?

Pics are welcome!

Here is an attempted chronology over the development of longer and longer paved road systems since Xanadu was released

June 10: The first noticeable road I saw went from Glasshollow starter town (D10) to the north coast (C10), which was around 80 tiles long. This was made long before server borders could be crossed.

June 12. very early on, a massive 3-lane road was paved on the southwestern island. Going from the spawn point Newspring (S9) to rocky cliffs and the deed Brogan towards west (S8), the road is almost 150 tiles long... but I am not sure it was already paved at this early date.

June 13: at the bay that is north of Linton starting point are some bustlng communities. The deed Black Hill at the bay started a road going south towards Linton that reached almost 240 tiles in length on this day, but then stopped construction.

June 15: back at Glasshollow spawn, you can now travel on paved road from the west coast at The Looking Glass deed (D9) up to the spawn, then north and east  through the deed Night Watch and beyond to the mountain (C10), a journey over more than 250 tiles.

But the question is if this had not already by that time been dwarfed by the following project:

June 17: a long road connecting Esteron spawn point (Q24) with the deed Lotus Outpost down by the sea (S25) is finished today, it is more than 450 tiles long. It is mostly 2-tile highway and took a week to build, mainly by Lotus mayor Jessicame.

June 19: Lormere region: on this day New Dawn Alliance completed a north-south highway connection to the as yet unfinished east-west road from Lormere (Q15) to the sea. Most of the highway work was done by Eyerobot from the "West Beach" deed on the coast in Q14. In total the trip from West Beach up from the bay, south on the highway and east towards Lormere covers 500 tiles. The east-west highway is built by Validate, and this entire road system will certainly grow in the coming days.

June 20: Whitefay region now has the longest road system. While the advertised highway from Valkyrie Landing has not arrived yet, there is already one paved road  going south from Whitefay (I20/21). From here it continues west, winding down to the coast of the great inner lake (J20), clocking almost 700 tiles along the way. At the lake is an undeeded are with houses from the road builders, Bonine and Bogart.

June 27: on this date the Lormere Bay community put the hammer down and presented the most developed road network bar none. You can now travel from Greenlegs deed way down in R15, north to the Dark Highway and East to Lormere spawn, from there further north through Dirtmund deed and all the way up to the Valley of the Damned market up in P15. This paved road journey spans 2 full map quadrants in the N-S direction, in addition to the E-W movement along the way.

Wilford, Geddylee and Balack built the Greenlegs section, Woovie and Ockosib built the Dirtmund section, and Ghoulsblade and Sollo from Valley of the Damned built the northern parts.

Linton North Highway. Much has been done, far from complete, but we will not talk about plans as per the OP rules. Here are pics of what is done, by a non premium toon that just landed on Xanadu Friday evening. This is part of the challenge, doing this as non premium just to see what obsticles can be overcome.

(Continued from post #1)

July 10: today the Lormere spawn point was connected to a new massive 3-lane highway going straight south, all the way to the coast in S15. The whole thing was built by the player Madaren from the New Dawn deed down there (not to be confused with New Dawn Alliance). You can now travel from P15 to S15 on the roads (map in later post http://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/topic/103829-roads-roads-roads/?p=1074072)

August 1: around this date the Valkyrie Highway was finished and connected to Whitefay. From the peninsula northeast of Valkyrie Landing and all the way to the inner lakes, this networks now spans a full 5 map tiles (map here http://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/topic/103829-roads-roads-roads/?p=1096959)

September - October 9:  the Whitefay region still had the longest road system, and this is now being extended westward to Greymead by Mortomes. The connection occurred on October 9, and even some time before that, a road was made around the mountains south of Greymead, so that the area down there is in fact connected all the way to the east coast. Details can be seen on my map from that period (I was lacking info at the time so my map in post #83 did not show the full length). This makes the eastern regions continue having the longest possible road journey.

December 28, 2014:  this was the day that the Hellhound Trail from the Linton area reached the roads around Greymead, and finally connected western and eastern Xanadu, as seen in this post.

Oh, keep the roads secret, otherwise the Google Streetview Car will take pictures of your house.

Before these roads get turned into not-changeable dev protected highways can the slopes please be smoothed out.

Flattening every tile such that you're constantly bouncing up and down makes for a pretty jarring ride and is visually unappealing.  It's more effort but worth it to make the slope transitions much smoother.  It's also ok to bank the roads around sloping terrain, the hard left/right turns all mysteriously at some notion of flat don't look good either.

Alternatively can we get general permission to 'smooth out' protected highways.  I'll gladly smooth any highways I cross if given general permission.

I have been smoothing them across the width, but I would rather them roll with the terrain.

highway protection I thought was always against blocking access or removal... I've frequently removed paved spots to adjust either a side slant/speed bump or even just to change from cobblestone to slab.

I say it's never against the ruling to "improve the condition thereof or access within" a highway.

Actually that is not correct, you cant do anything to a highway without permission.

If you just use flatten on the tile boarder only, across the width, you will get nice results for your slopes going up and down most of the time, in rare cases you will need to go back to adjust a slope to make sure its not over 23 slopes high.

99.9% of the time a GM will say go for it. The thing is they want to be called and give approval first so that is someone throws a hissy fit they can throw the "GM Declaration" rule at them.

OP has been updated with a chronological list of some long roads. The longest is now longer than 450 tiles, please let me know about roads that I have overlooked!

Soon all these roads will be connected in networks of mega-highways and we will all have forgotten how it all began  ;)

Smoothing a sharp twenty slope climb to a ten slope is ok. but I dont like seeing roads roll with terrain. It gives new neighbors the idea that they can bend it any which way they want, Without conforming the slope to their deed to match the existing road. And then you wind up with a completely butchered road over time. A new road cut into angles may look like legoland at first. but it soon becomes obvious to new people what they should be doing. Instead of just paving any old crooked tile.

When it comes to a brand new public road, I use sharp angles, And then leave it up to whoever moves in, to smooth or flatten it. This gives everyone the opportunity to connect to a flat road at some point. And not try to connect to some odd 8 slope angle, That's just meandering through the hills.

I have to disagree to be honest. This can happen with any highway, not just rolling hills. I feel having roads that roll with the terrain look far better than the 15 slop instantly to 0 slope, etc that you tend to see a lot. Mind you, it's also a matter of preference.

Since none of the major road constructions seem to have moved forward this week, here is instead a couple of more pictures from the *still* longest paved road on Xanadu by far!. From Whitefay going South and then West to the inner lake now called Dream Lake by some. I was told today that this road was indeed built by two guys called Bonine and Bogart that live by that lake.

Here is the view from the road back towards Whitefay, which will be to the far left of the pic near the mountain.

And here is a view from the road and towards NW, where in the background you see the lake now called Ageless Lake by some.

Valkyrie Highway leads from Valkyrie Landing at J24 to J20 region and up to Whitefay, it's completed  just needs paved more. We're using regular cobblestone should anyone want to help pave this very popular highway to the coast from Whitefay.

I think Valk Highway is a bit longer heh, but it took a ton of work to get our lower region paved. It's paved from J20 to J24 all the way. It just needs the section going up to Whitefay paved.

Edit:  great, after some kind instructions from these guys I am once again heading out to investigate the "Valkyrie Highway".
