The Case of The Fidgety Fingers Flu "if its in the game and it is not patched you should not get into trouble for doing it. that simple" "how is doing what is in the game a bannable offense its the game at fault not me" So you think that just because you can do something you should be allowed to.... Well, let's give this some perspective and see just how sound an argument that really is shall we! I could go drinking and driving! I could go jump off a cliff! I could check the blades of my mowers while they are running! I could look directly at the sun! I could go drink milk! I could go lick a frozen metal pole! I could go rob a bank! I could go build bombs! I could go play with a wild skunk! Any of this getting through? No!! Well, let me elaborate.... Life is a sandbox too! All of these things above I can do because the mechanics of life allow it! This does not in any way mean that I should do these things. Every single one of these sandbox actions have consequences socially and or legally! After all, the police do tend to get uppity if you rob a bank! I can just see trying those above quotes on a police officer. Wurm Online is also a sandbox with a massive amount of mechanical freedom, but just as in life there are expectations to how you should behave. We have discussed social behavior many times in a lot of threads in GM Hall, and Rolf himself once said that just because you can do something in Wurm, does not mean you necessarily should. It is impossible to have a true sandbox without some guidelines to allow our society to function. For the most part these guidelines are called the rules, and the sad truth is that the Game Masters of Wurm Online are the police in Wurm Online. One of our functions is to hold you to certain expectations and not allow anarchy as it only sews fear and anger. It has not been that long ago that we banned a number of people for rather malicious activities involving our PVP community. Their actions have prompted us to label them Toxic Players and we removed them from the game for their Extreme Disruptive Behavior. I am surprised to see someone following in the footsteps of those we have removed already. I refer to the incident reported here in these forums. Keep in mind that we recently removed a couple of people from the game for this very activity. Chaos is a chaotic ecosystem. It has been a very enjoyable experience in the past, but it has a major problem with its situation on the Freedom Cluster. That problem is thievery. Nothing is safe in a PVP environment, so it is a bit surprising to say that theft is a problem, so let me explain. Are you okay with someone entering your town, acting like your villager, and then robbing you blind only to leave to another country where you have no chance of getting revenge or possibly your stolen items back? If you said yes, then your brain is not firing on all cylinders and you should take it in to the shop for a tune up. We expect there to be raiding and looting and killing and slaughtering and pillaging and banter and all that goes with PVP, but infiltrating a PVP village for the purpose of looting it is not acceptable. This is NOT PVP! PVP is raiding a village like a... raider.. or a pirate... or an enemy. Becoming a villager under any pretense to gain the trust of a village and then abusing the permissions they have given you to steal from them or cause harm to them is not in any sense a PVP action! It is an utterly reprehensible action that we do not accept as an expected behavior! Thank you for reading these words of wisdom, poetic they may not be. Thank You, Wurm Online Team

Just on the edge of each starter town an old wizened oak tree will appear, what secrets does it hold? You'll have to explore yourself... This weekend we'll be celebrating Midsummer with a special event on Xanadu! The event will start at each starter town and lead to a central location Those who survive the event will receive a special unique event only prize! As this is a unique prize, we'll also have it open to Epic players, simply come through the epic portal, complete the murderhouse event, and receive the prize, then you can log a support ticket for it to be moved to your character on epic You will not need: A horse A boat Combat capabilities Sanity You will need Food Water A sense of humour See you there!

People keep wanting to consolidate so people are in one place. But I think most people don't want some one moving in next to them. Basically one of those "not in my backyard" thing. We want nuclear power but I don't want the plant any where near me. Look at the deli thread for example. One guy want to turn it into a oak forest where there are no deeds. The people with deeds don't want the oak trees. Others do t want other deeds near them. Wile other people have trader deeds all over the server and claim those areas as their area that they don't want some one changing. Then you see the let's close other servers down as long as it is t mine.

Stop and wave to every new player you meet, because you don't know who may be lonely and dying for someone to talk to. Just over this past week I've befriended two players who confided that they had no one to talk to or keep them company in-game. They were surprised and overjoyed when I waved to them first and then even engaged with them. One is a disabled player, for example. On a server that's fairly populous. Not sure if every MMO out there has this problem. My gut says "no".

Dear Mr. Enki, On behalf of The Cattle, Bison, and Sheep Breeders Association of Xaniacs, I write you regarding your recent opposition to milk. We, Xaniac Lactose Providers of Wurm, could not agree more that playing with wild skunks is inadvisable considering the lack of Ketchup in Wurm. We would also agree that drinking our milk products while operating a cart, wagon, or ship of unusual size is also inadvisable, and have labeled our amphorae accordingly for public safety. However, we would like to point out that Milk, in all its forms, is a natural bounty worthy of the rarest coin. It puts a mustache on many a face that would look odd without it, has stimulated the sale of cookies Wurmwide, and whipped into proper butter can even harden the weakest of arteries. We invite you to visit your local breeder for a sampling straight from the teat. The threat of trampling is minimal, and often compared to an enthusiastic Swedish massage. This message is brought to you with the support of Ron Burgundy, milk aficionado since 1074.

I simply mean wurm online is a pay to play game. You pay to play the game. It's not required to have skills that allow you subsidize your premium, nor a market place where you can buy/sell to cover your own costs. That it does so is a bonus. At the end of the day we as players are paying for entertainment value

The game should provide us ways to live out of any skill. Who wants to be a Fisherman for a living? Well I'd want, if only I could sell fishes or retrieve valuable stuff from a fish. My point is, there are tons of skills but while some are highly profitable and/or have high demand, there are some with almost zero demand. We should be able to choose a skill, any skill, grind it up and really make a living out of it, otherwise there's little to no reason to have such a vast skill list.

Hi there! Not many might recognise me nowadays but I've been a long time Wurm Online fan and untill the release of epic roamed on pretty much most of the maps that have been out since beta around the around 2005/2006. I grew up with MMORPGs, the games i played are what defines me, and sandboxes were usually the MMOs that kept me gone from "real life" the longest. I do consider my general experience with MMOs quite fair Please. keep reading, ill make it interesting dont give up Very often I find myself thinking about Wurm, the times I've had, all the fantastic trips into the wild and most of all the people, who I believe were equally divided into the ones that hated and liked me :P. Wurm is in my heart, no doubt I am in love with it, no man or woman has ever had that royal place inside of my thoughts. And yet, I can't get myself to play it again. I do remember the first day in wurm, last map before gold(wurm release, 2006) first log on, not knowing what to do, just a bunch of felled trees, logs, wooden huts some sand and clay, back then of course a lot of the textures were lacking and the game just seemed... simpler, which was good. Now I joined wurm because of a group of friends from a different MMORPG, Face of Mankind(My second love, dead, unfortunately). I knew where to go, they told me, they gave me my first task in the game, to join them I had to travel quite a long distance to the white light, then along a road etc etc. So all pumped up after getting to know the interface I started my first journey. It felt real, the game, even though everybody looked the same, it had that feeling of an alternate reality. And it wasn't that difficult at all to get started back then, the game had a lot less stuff in it, but still enough, enough to not make you all confused. Equipment list, skill table, can't get any simpler. After a bit of walking towards the white light, in a forest i came across a boar. I wanted to kill it of course, so I equipped my pickaxe... attacked it... and it totally owned me. I played around a bit, joined that village (Tiergarten) learned the basics and since the map too was already a bit used up just decided to wait for the big gold 1 release, where everyone began from zero again. Anyways, while typing this i realised that I could probably write a book about my personal wurm history, which is not the point, as I believe many of you could pretty much do the same. I just want to point out a few observations i made over the years, trying to put it together with the experience I gathered while playing other games, watching them rise and fall and the patterns that became clear once thinking stuff through. The first thing new people see nowadays is the tutorial map, I don't like it. I didn't like any of the tutorials, they seemed like work. My brain hurt after going through it, it was too much, its confusing it discouraged me and discouraged the person i wanted to show wurm to. The beautiful thing about wurm was its starter area. Wurm is a community game, soon after logging on and not really knowing what to do the first thing that comes to mind is to of course use the chat to get help. And help always came, readily. New Town and its area around always had people who were willing to show you around, teach you the basics, recruit you. And thats how you got into the game, making your first friend, getting that living anchor that makes you log on again in that cool new reality, not learning how to do all the things in one go, battling a headache on the way. It was so simple, If you're a loner, you could also just take the tools you were given at the beginning, and make your own way, and hell, it wasn't that hard to get into the game back then, because there were always folks around. I do believe a lot of the simplicity came because of the simplicity of the game itself. Wurm is too flashy right now. It used to be a darker game, darker textures, simpler buildings, less sophisticated stuff all around. It was appealing, i mean we have so much stuff around in real life nowadays why would we want to play games to, again, have too much? Why is wurm trying to become so modern and advanced. we just can't battle newer games by adding more stuff, sometimes less is MORE. Another thing I want to point out is the lack of refreshes. What i mean is, there used to be a period in wurm where maps kept getting reset, chapters ended, players returned, people reunited taking up yet another story which they could fill with their own experiences. Maps, player accounts, they used to get reset. All the beta maps, the first wurm gold map(memory failure, reimbursements were given out for that, i still believe it all turned out for the better), then the home servers. Stuff moved. Let things get static and people will leave because of boredom. Adding yet new maps and releasing unlimited only tears its community apart. We are a small community, living on a very vast planet, spread across so many Wurm Online maps(12 now? not counting wurm unlimited). Most people dont wan't to lose their 'work' they put into the game, their accounts, their settlements. But isn't the best part creating new stuff not piling it up? The monetary worth of skills is one of the reasons people are so against map resets. People will be sad, but it doesnt have to be that way, the reimbursement systems worked fine, and even the op items that were given out made this game slighlty more interesting but definitely not reason enough to quit the game. So much terrain, so few people around. Many are opposing the idea, but i firmly believe that after a FULL reset(including epic), fewer maps, just like the gold maps, one home server, one wild server, thats it, and the community will come back, it will stick together. Be a home server person and build great things yet again, or go to wild to form alliances and battle each other. Adding new maps was the answer for people who wanted something new, but the ones that were too attached always stayed behind, making the servers empty. Wurm is a wasteland, lets make it green again so we can begin a new chapter. We have Wurm Unlimited now, for those that want to let their imagination run free without boundaries, but Wurm Online is a community game, a MMORPG, it doesn't work without its players, Wurm Online: 2 maps, no tutorial map. just a home server, where everybody starts out,, and wild, where people cross over to step into the PvP world when ready.

Did a search and didnt see it suggested, so here goes: Is there any way we could get a more precise reading on the amount of fuel left in a fire/lamp/lantern? It would be nice to know instead of getting paranoid and examining an item constantly. Heck, you could even tie the ability to firemaking, with higher skill giving more detail about the fuel left, type and effect.

I found a gray-colored horse near the northern Indy border, with a shark swimming around it. Lead it back to my deed. The horse has no equipment. If you're the owner of this horse, contact me ingame ('Dragonhead') or a message in here(if I'm not online). Pickup at Oceanside Retreat (NW corner of F10 on the World Map | between 12/13y, 9x on the Albia roads map(right on the mainland)). If I receive no contact within two weeks from the start of this post, I will assume this horse is ownerless and claim it as my own.

On the one hand, it sounds to me like this would be beneficial for wurm as a whole; gives the PvE whales somewhere to spend their money, reduces the reliance on the falling PvP population for certain goods/services, adds incentives to explore the world and encourages large communities. All things likely to have a positive impact on player retention. On the other hand. in reality, PvP goods are the only stable market at the moment and it risks destabilising it thus causing a lot of issues in an already turbulent time. This would hit the PvP crowd quite hard as the big sellers for any kingdom are its tents/wagons/flags/towers, it would force them to spend more money in a system which is already paying out much less than it once did and this might well be the final nail in the coffin of wurm PvP (it could force population below critical mass). There is also the matter of the INSANE powers granted with certain titles (50% favor costs with high priest anyone?). Overall this implementation would benefit more people than it harms, but the people it harms are already in a pretty dire place and the harm inflicted is uncertain to be outweighed by the good it creates. I'll reserve judgment until after the "religion overhaul", see how badly I get nerfed this time around.

Well I assume that you never have to if you don't want. What comes to Xanadu, many people who live there call the place home, like I do. I've lived most of my Wurmian time on Xanadu and I have no desire to move elsewhere. I have a great community around me, perfect place to work on, lots of wild land with hunting grounds... and no lag bothers me. I feel a bit annoyed by the fact that some people in this very thread are eager to shut down Xanadu. That would mean over 100 people's homes lost, or even more. Seems like people saying this aren't living on Xanadu and are just tossing the idea "let's destroy people's homes on large server just because" without thinking the effort we have put into this very server. And the final word about wiping servers to attract more people to the game; there is no way that has a positive signal, when you realise that they have wiped it once, they might do it again. Even the new players are starting to fear for it, not willing to create the stuff they want to because of it. And I see it only to annoy current, active players and I would think very carefully, if I would continue this game after giving almost 4 years of effort, if it's all wiped. And as Dev's have said, this is impossible, which I'm glad about.

Making a living would be a lot from one skill, and would require people to either spend large amounts of time or spend a lot of money to enjoy most aspects of wurm. However i agree with the fact that every skill should have a use. Wurm's only "Rare" is rarity and it seems all good and dandy but it actually HEAVILY screws some skills. What can you do with a rare fish? rare thatch? rare dye (if possible, I think it is). What if certain items REQUIRED rares. Making Extremely fancy looking roofs (rooves? I can't english) out of rare thatch. butchering rare fish for a special bone that can be placed on a necklace for cool jewelry. Rare dye painted on items to give a slight glow (Saves space for another rune) and gives the prefix Shiny. I can see rich people wanting a "Shiny rare Large Cart" with a rune for speed. Additions to the rarity system can definitely change some of the lame classes.

Coming up with a way to make money is half the fun of Wurm (if you want to make money). Some skills or items are going to be more in demand, often because they're harder or boring. Some people just think out of the box and make skill pizzas or whatever. It would be nice if fish had some different benefits or butchering products, though. Fish bones that can be made into tools or some use in dye, maybe.

That limitation is based on wall types and fences, so these items would be perfectly possible to implement

They should let us represent our Chaos PMK on all freedom servers and not just on Chaos. I'm DD all day every day no matter the server, but can't represent that way. Then you can have some protect your PMK and have other represent on other freedom servers. I think if representation is all servers it would bring more to Chaos since freedomers would really want a PMK then.

We're not shutting down servers. End of story. Rolf's policy has always been so long as there's even one person still playing on a server, it's going to remain open. There's no post size quota, like quota, poll quota, or any other unit of measure that's going to change that. You might as well get used to it and move on. Did you check out what you can do in caves now? Might be a better use of time.

Preamble: Hello! Welcome to your one-stop shop for made-to-order, previously owned boats! All boats failed inspection, but who needs bureaucracy when you have a brand new, functional1 boat!? Boats can be delivered, but it will cost extra and may not be available depending on the vessel sold! All boats guaranteed at least 40ql and to float2! Why wander Wurm on foot when you could get a brand new floating2 boat? Each boat includes several Speed-holesTM drilled into the keel and sails, decreasing weight and drag3 and making YOUR new boat go faster! All sales AND sails are final! 1. Boats not intended to function, sold as novelty items only. 2. Boats may not float. it is not recommended you bring boats near water, the paper machae may melt. 3. Not scientifically proven. May cause lack of propulsion, sinking of boats, and death. Actual Details: Based out of Xanadu, R21, delivery is possible. Delivery orders may be added at the back of the build queue, putting pick-ups first. Rowboat - 1s Small Sailing Boat - 1s (ON SAIL!!!!) Corbita - 3s Cog - 3s Knarr - 7.5s Caravel - ??? Trade-ins are also available! Rowboat - 25c Small Sailing Boat - 50c Corbita - 2s Cog - 2s Knarr - N/a? Caravel - N/a???? Don't like the prices? PM me on the forums or wurm, we'll see what we can do. Hey, I'm not against stam food. Just think rock climbing would be wicked. Iron Lump + Small Anvil = Whatever the spike thing is called, will edit this later. Activate hammer with spike in inventory. Right-click tile of a certain slope and "Hammer spike" Activate rope and right-click tile with spike then "Attach rope" Already covered the movement possibilities. EDIT: Copy of my original bump's suggestion because I know many people will skip the first page. To add on the original suggestion, being as ropes don't actually have length, perhaps it could be one rope per 1-3 tiles and either use stam or act kind of like a ladder. You climb up one and hang onto the rope, if you activate climb at that point you can move off the rope, if you don't activate climb and move off you fall. Link multiple ropes together and climb all the way up and down.

-1. Most emphatically. Very few things annoy me more in any game, as far as graphics are concerned, than excessive darkness and lack of visibility. I find absolutely nothing pleasant about it, in fact I find it very unpleasant. I generally do not play games that insist I should blindly grope my way through the game at night in the name of realism, or I limit my time in the game to times when I can bloody see. I'm sorry but there are times when too much realism in a computer game defeats the entire purpose of playing a computer game in the first place. And not to be overly adversarial, but to say that those who have older comps are "stuck in the past" and should "get with the times" and/or tweak their settings because you want it darker, that's a bit of a stretch don't you think? How 'bout this, those who are yearning for the so-called "good old days," could always "get with the times" (since at the current time night is not pitch black), and tweak their own settings & monitors to achieve the darkness they want, since their computers are so uber and can probably achieve the results they want far easier than those who have the older computers.

Why should ever action in the game provide a financial reward? If there is a demand for your skill then you will be paid for it. Would you like to be told that "Now in order to sleep in a bed you will need to hire an interior designer to adjust your room according to feng shui or you will not receive sleep bonus?" Content should be added as needed to improve the game, not to assist those with fringe interest in padding their wallets. A better arguement might be "If there is no demand or use for this skill then why have the skill st all?"

Hey Retro. Short answer: Treat the whole server like it was my personal giant deed in which I could control settings exactly like I can for deeds. This way - if I chose to at some point - I could allow people to build a house or do other things. Then the settings could be changed easily at any time from deed permissions. But putting aside whether it behaves like a deed or not: What I want visitors to be able to do: walk/swim/climb around pass through gates and doors (if I had set the door and gate permissions so they can be passed through) sit on chairs What I don't want players to be able to do: Chop down trees Pick up, drop, move etc Plant, farm, harvest, pick sprout, cut grass etc) Terraform Dig/Pack/Cultivate etc Mine/Tunnel Build anything / Create a deed etc In general, anything that changes the landscape in any way, shape or form In general, anything that gives them the idea that this is a normal server where they can eventually build stuff. Giant deed? So would Brew's suggestion of just making a gigantic deed work? I guess the deed token would have to be smack dab in the middle of the 2048x2048 map, then made to fit the entire map. Is that even technically possible? :-D And I'm guessing that the whole server could not simply be deeded since: a) I'm assuming the spawning stones where players arrive into the world for the first time need to be on special tiles and b ) If the entire map were deeded, that would mean animals and critters would not spawn at all Long answer: But the dream solution would be this: Server settings: 1. The current 2048x2048 map size is pretty sweet and totally explorable by foot. But it would be nice if the GM could also choose a more manageable "touring size" like 1024x1024. Still way bigger than a normal deed would usually be. 2. Being able to set a welcome message to visitors in the Event window such as: "Welcome to Sunny Side Server. This is public server with restricted access. We warmly welcome you to explore!" 3. And then something like "Press <keystroke> for more information on the settings of this server" 4. Allowing visitors to leave messages on the deed message boards. You could do this in Ultima Online and it was super exciting to log on and check who had left you nice messages from their visits to your house 5. Ability to share map settings so the GM could add annotations to explain the locations of interesting sights to see. This would be the default map seen by the player when they open their in game map. They would see any annotations set by the GM. They would not be able to remove GM annotations, but they could add additional ones for themselves if they liked. Visitor settings: All skills set to 100.0. by default Ability to catch wild mounts and ride them (so they can have a faster form of transport for exploration) Ability to sail any size of ship (and then the gm could spawn ships all over the lands, setting their permissions to be publicly usable) - again, so they have a more convenient way to explore Full nourishment, stamina and water that never goes down, so they can run around and explore without having to worry about food and drink - besides - if they're not able to build or properly interact with the environment, there is no way for them to create food for themselves anyhow Making visitors invincible (or invisible) to critters and monsters so they don't have to worry about dying first thing As mentioned in the short answer, they simply could not interact with the landscape other than walk/swim/climb, pass through gates and doors that had the correct permissions for public use and sit on chairs They could not tame (since this would require interaction with the environment to get taming food), but could lead and ride wild horses (since a rope is part of the newbie backpack these days)
